Cheap EatsFor places better suited to a student’s budget, here are some of the most popular cheap easts around Newcastle.

This is a great take away sandwich shop for nipping to in between lectures. With sandwiches the size of dinner plates, they’re a great place to refuel.

Another take away sandwich shop, serving giant baps with any filling and 3 salad choices, this place is a firm favourite with students. Make sure to try out their delicious cakes too!

Great pub near the library for cheap eats, especially in the summer as it has a large outdoor seating area.

Built in 1872 as stables/livery. Reopened Spring 2014, City Tavern is relaxed and comfortable, with good food and a good selection of ales and ciders. Take a seat upstairs to fully experience the fantastic renovation.

Three pools, including a toddler pool with a bubble machine, studio pool and the main leisure pool with a wave machine and fountains. The leisure pool also has two 50m flumes, a sauna and steam room.

Parks1. Exhibition Park

Claremont Road

The park has something for everyone from the swing park for the toddlers to the putting range for the parents. The park has a full range of activities to suit everyone’s taste and also has large amounts of open green land on which to simply relax, read or take a picnic!

2. Leazes ParkRichardson Road

Leazes Park is a Victorian Park off Richardson Road. It is the city's oldest park, opened in 1873. The park contains a lake above the course of the Lord Burn. It is next to St James' Park and the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

3. Town MoorClaremont Road

The Town Moor is one of the features that make Newcastle special, with around 1000 acres of open space providing a green heart to the City. It has a history as pasture land dating back to the 12th century, its land tenure and use is regulated by its own Act of Parliament.

4. Jesmond DeneRed WalkNewcastle upon Tyne

Jesmond Dene is a hidden gem, with a waterfall, quiet pathways, a café and even a petting zoo; it’s the perfect setting for a weekend walk, and only a 20 minute walk from the library to get there.

This vibrant market is flourishing with traders selling quality local crafts, artwork, jewellery, fashion and food together with the traditional stalls selling plants, clothing, sweets, ice cream and toys.

Every Saturday and Sunday, 9am-4pmA bit further afield out by the coast, there is Tynemouth Market. Every weekend it inhabits the metro station and sells almost anything you can think of; from general bric-a-brac stalls, to specialist antique stalls and jewellery, it’s a collector’s paradise! Jump on the metro from any station towards to the coast and get off at Tynemouth Metro.

The award-winning structure was conceived and designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre and structural engineers Gifford. The bridge is sometimes referred to as the 'Blinking Eye Bridge' due to its shape and tilting method. In terms of height, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge is slightly shorter than the neighbouring Tyne Bridge, and stands as the sixteenth tallest structure in the city.

The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture, designed by Antony Gormley and created in 1998. Rising to 20m high and made out of 200 tonnes of steel, the Angel of the North is one of the most talked about pieces of public art ever produced and is a must see!

A large indoor shopping centre, with over 340 shops, 29 eateries, an arcade and an IMAX cinema, the Metrocentre is a perfect destination for a rainy weekend in Newcastle. Get there in 7 minutes on a local train from central station.

Often some very varied exhibits, it’s free to get in (donations welcome) and the balcony at the top provides some good photo opportunities of the bridges!

The impressive permanent collection can be enjoyed throughout the season with dynamic landscapes by John Martin and sculpture by Henry Moore. There are events throughout the year including talks from leading contemporary artists and fun activities for families. Many of these events, like the gallery, are free of charge.

A range of art, jewellery, photography and sculptures with an added bonus of delicious cakes in the café.

Theatres1. Northern Stage

Northern Stage is the largest producing theatre company in the North East of England, and is regarded one of the top-ten UK producing theatres showing classic plays, comedy, dance and family shows. Newcastle University Theatre Society also put on plays and musical there regularly. Opposite the Student Union, it’s right on campus with discounts available for students.

Sunset Boulevard, Grease and Jersey Boys are just some of the shows happening in 2017/18. There is also a yearly Christmas panto and other touring musicals throughout the year.

Gigs 1. O2 Academy

Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1SW

With acts such as Dizzee Rascal, Scouting for Girls and Electric Six playing in 2017/18, it’s the hot venue for big acts in the city centre. The O2 also runs club nights on Friday and Saturday nights, and it has the O2 Academy 2, which is a smaller venue upstairs for up-and-coming artists.

2. Metro Radio ArenaArena Way, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE4 7NA

The Metro Radio Arena is the 10th busiest venues in the world, ranked by paid attendance figures! As if that wasn’t a good enough reason to go, it hosts huge music acts, as well as live comedy and musicals, it is the biggest venue in the North!

3. The Cluny36 Lime Street, Ouseburn, NE1 2PQ

The Cluny is a legendary folk venue in the City. There are two venues, a larger and a smaller one, and in the past Cluny has been host to famous acts such as Glasvegas, the Arctic Monkeys, Kate Nash, Mumford and Sons, and Maximo Park. So head down and take a punt on an up and coming act, you never know, you might be listening to the next Arctic Monkeys!

4. As You Like ItJesmond Three Sixty, Jesmond, NE2 1DB

A wine and cocktail bar, a stone’s throw from the Robinson Library. A chance to dress up a bit, with fantastic live jazz and cover bands over the Friday and Saturday for a more classy evening. They also do good grub too!
