Someone asked me what Christmas meant to me. Being an ageing cynic, I said that it meant 10 days off and more football.

What it traditionally means for Newcastle United supporters, of course, is a mixture of defeats and trying to find someone sober to drive you to and from the games during the festive period, as Arriva is still to grasp the concept of ‘public’ and ‘transport’ in the same sentence.

On Planet Football of course, Christmas and New Year is a time of frenzy matched only by WAGs in a silly hat sale.

It’s the time when the transfer window gives clubs a final chance to pull away from the relegation zone, a last throw of the dice to cling to the Premiership. It would be nice if Newcastle weren’t involved, but like Christmas without Slade, it wouldn’t be the same. I would dearly love a change once in a while, mind! Join the party in and around Stowell Street as Chinatown marks Chinese New Year (February 8), before enjoying a little romance in the city on Valentine’s Day (February 14).

After more than 100,000 people flocked to Grey Street for a weekend of classic cars and more in 2015, NE1’s Newcastle Motor Show is back (July 9-10). The streets will also be packed a week later for Newcastle Pride (July 16-17), before the big screen returns to Grey’s Monument for NE1’s Monument Movies (from July 26) and outdoor table tennis tables return to the city’s streets.

Welcome thousands of new faces to the city in September with Freshers’ Week at Newcastle and Northumbria universities. Mo Farah hopes to defend his Great North Run title (September 11), and the city’s historic landmarks open their doors for Heritage Open Days (September 8-11).

NE1’s Alive After Five scheme, which keeps the city buzzing with late-nigh shopping and free parking from 5pm in seven city centre multi-storey car parks, celebrates its sixth birthday. Meanwhile, ghosts and ghouls come out for Hallowe’en (October 31).

It’s all about Christmas in NE1 with festive markets, late-night shopping and the return of St Nick in locations across the city.

Earplugs at the ready, old skool rockers - Motörhead are heading to Newcastle.

Motörhead’s The Loudest Tour in the World hits Europe Jan-Feb 2016, with support in Newcastle from the legendary Girlschool.

They’re bringing a 41-year-old back catalogue too, and if you’re old enough to remember them first time around, it’s to be hoped you don’t find it too loud now.

Motörhead comprises the holy trinity of heavy metal - Mikkey Dee (percussion), Phil Campbell (guitar), and the legendary Lemmy (bass and vocals). Here’s more…

Founder member and songwriter Lemmy (centre), real name Ian Fraser Kilmister, is the sole constant member of Motörhead. Aged 70 (yes, really), he is joined by Welsh rock legend Phil Campbell, 54, (left) who’s been in the band for 32 years, and Mikkey Dee, real

ACE OF SPADESname Micael Kiriakos Delaoglou (Swedish/Greek, aged 52, looks 103), who’s been in the band for 23 hard-living years.

Motörhead is widely thought to be a reference to the drug amphetamine (speed) after Lemmy, who is a fan, said the name of the band referenced ‘speed freaks’. He has since said he was referring to people who like cars.

The name Lemmy apparently stems from his persistent requests for money - “Lemmy a few bucks”.

Of their performance at Glastonbury in 2015, The Guardian’s Mark Beaumont wrote: “At 69, Lemmy is a slurring, gargling rock wreck, a shrunken Biker General of the Damned...predictable but effective.”

Lemmy, who is rumoured to have kept bourbon maker Jack Daniels in business single handedly over the last

50 years, was sacked about 100 years ago from the rock band Hawkwind (he wrote Motörhead’s first hit single, Motörhead, for them originally). He reckons that after they dumped him in 1975, he bedded all his former band members’ wives. Rock ‘n’ roll revenge is sweet, it seems.

He also used to be a roadie for Emerson Lake & Palmer and for Jimi Hendrix, there is a fantastic urban myth that he had an orgy with all of the Nolan Sisters backstage at Top of the Pops (if only it were true), and he famously has a huge collection of Nazi memorabilia, which is nice.

When Motörhead’s biggest hit, Ace of Spades, was adapted for the video game Rock Band 2, its lyrics were changed to reflect Lemmy’s legendary immortality. “I don’t want to live forever…but apparently I am.”
