BYU Hawaii Curriculum Proposal Number [ 11-02] Section 2 - Overview (Support)

Summary: The purpose of this proposal request is to simplify the information listed in the University Catalog, making it more user friendly for the students, advisors, and faculty. At the present the EXS major is presented without "tracks" in the catalog. We are proposing that the major be listed under four academic tracks or emphases, ie., Exercise and Sport Science, Health, Fitness and Wellness Management, and Physical Education Teacher certification. Also we are proposing a Major Requirement Sheet for each track. We are also suggesting that the catalog entries be updated to reflect these changes of clarification.

These changes have been discussed with the Departments assigned student advisor, Gaylene Bopp and the EXS faculty. We are confident that these proposed changes will greatly simplify the advisement and counseling efforts with the students as well as making the catalog more user friendly for both students and faculty.

In the cases where the track requirements necessitate taking courses in other departments and colleges, the EXS Department has consulted with the faculty in those areas for course recommendation and suggestions to prevent any negative impact or overload to their respective class loads. We have been especially pleased with the cooperation we have received and the sincere interest to assist that we have felt from the various departments and colleges.

Changes in Graduation Requirements: No elements of the proposal being made will affect or impact any graduation requirements.

Changes in Expected Teaching Load: The proposals being made by the EXS Department will not require any changes in teaching load for the departmental faculty and any student load impact on other departments that may be perceived has been discussed and sanctioned with the respective departments as discussed in paragraph 3 under Summary.
