History students from years eight and nine taught by Mrs Hassen, wereinvited to enter a competition that involved them working in teams or asindividuals to showcase their skills and knowledge about their favouritehistory era in any number of ways, be it film, poster, poem, song etc. Inaddition to this they had to submit a summary of why they chose their era in no more than 60 words. The winners of this competition were Katie,Oliver, Chloe, Ryan, Naomi and Lukas from 9H1 who created an impressiveshort film on Roman slavery. Their winning entry was submitted to the nationwide 60 second Epic History Era Competition, representing BarnwellSchool to compete against the entries from all other UK schools.

A total of 78 schools across the UK entered the competition and I am very proudto announce that Barnwell School was awarded runner up! It is such a greatachievement to have been placed in the top 3 positions, having competed against other comprehensive, preparatory and private schools from across the UK.

What the judges thought of the Barnwell School entry:“Thoroughly impressed with this entry…it blended good humour and it was done in a very entertaining way… Congratulations for their super entry”

What Barnwell School’s competition winners thought: “We’re really proudof ourselves andwould love to enterthe competitionagain next year! We enjoyedgetting to choose anera that we werepassionate about and enjoyedlearning about. Itwas a fun way to learn about slavery in the Roman era because we were able toproduce our own mini film which allowed us to produce more creative work thanusual. We thought this was good because we were really interested in what wewere doing and we felt that we learnt a lot too“.

The winning group were awarded an Epic History presentation plaque currently displayed in the Schools’ awardscabinet and were also given a bag full of goodies.

GCSE GeographyFieldwork &ControlledAssessmentAt the end of June, our Year 10 GCSEGeography students visited the Essex coastas part of their studies. In order to producea top quality controlled assessment, students are required to plan, and thencarry out investigations into geographical issues. This year, our focus was on evaluatingdifferent methods of coastal management.

Therefore, A visit to Walton-On-The-Nazewas extremely useful, as not only does thearea have a problem with coastal erosion,it also has a range of obviously differentmanagement strategies in use. Our taskwas to consider the advantages anddisadvantages of each. It is a complex issueand students spent the day carrying out arange of measurements and observationsin order to judge effectiveness fromphysical, environmental, social andeconomic viewpoints.

It was a long day, butdespite this ourstudents workedexceptionally wellthroughout;gathering excellentdata which has nowbeen used in some outstanding controlled assessments.

Thanks go to our staff team for the day,Mrs Allingham, Ms Hart, Mr Launay, MrSmith and to our 2 experts from the FieldStudies Council, who led our investigations.

Well done all!

Mr Smith

Year 7 and 8 Run Wild in Regent’s Park!On Thursday 9th June , 40 Year 7 and 8 students journeyed into the heart ofLondon for an unforgettable evening seeing a stage adaptation of the MichaelMorpurgo classic “Running Wild”. The play was presented at the beautifulRegent’s Park Open Air Theatre; a realoasis right in the heart of London. The play was centred around the wonderof nature and animals as well asreflecting

on some very serious and relevant themes such as conservation,

animal rights and where and how we get theeveryday products that we use. Amongst the many highlights in the play

were the incredible creature puppets from cute baby orangutans to a gracefuland beautiful elephant who made her way through and around the audience. All in all it was a magical experience at a magical venue!

Thank you to the students for their excellent behaviour. Mr Latchford

What Lurks in the Students’ Imagination? This term, two Year 7 classes were put forward for a creative writingcompetition where they had to produce a 100 word spine-chillingmini saga. Students took to the task with enthusiasm andconfidence, giving me goose bumps as I read their first drafts!

Huge congratulations go to the students below who were successful. Their workwill be published and copies will be put in libraries across the UK and Ireland.A copy will also be sent to Barnwell School and will be on display in the library.I am incredibly proud of their hard work and look forward to entering morecompetitions with them in the future!

THE SCIENCEFIELD TRIP

The Big Bang TripThursday 30th June 2016Students who have opted to studyTechnology subjects or Triple Science inYear 10 were invited to attend the BigBang Fair Eastern, at Newmarket RaceCourse last week. We travelled by coachand arrived in time to start the activitiesat 10am.

There were lots of exhibitors there andwe got to try out all sorts of activitiessuch as: building a model of an earth-quake-proof house, wearing 3D goggleswhich showed you how molecules aremade up and designing shapes whichwould best fly up a wind tunnel – DanielBucktrout’s design was very successful.

There were also stands from otherschools, with students presentinginvestigations that they had completedand displaying the Crest AwardCertificates they had earned.

We also had the opportunity to go tosome shows – one was by the ‘UglyAnimal Preservation Society’ and theother was called ‘Punk Science’. Bothshows were interactive, funny andeducational.

We had our packed lunch outside in thesunshine and some of our group triedthe Marines Challenge - to do 15 press-ups with a full pack on! Keilan Sanchezcompleted the challenge with 17 press-ups completed, whilst Mr Reavell andMr Lund didn’t quite make it! (Ahh)

On 4th July 2016, studentsin Year 8 Hoy College wenton the Science Field Trip. This is how it went…

In the morning we went into school at normal time but we were in non-schooluniform and we set off for Ridlins atabout 9:00am. Our first activity was atthe stream and we measured the flowrate, temperature, pH and the depth ofthe stream using the thermometer, universal indicator paper and the ruler. After we had recorded our results, welooked for organisms in the water; wefound lots of things even a frog. Thenwe had break.

After break we went to Ridlins Wood

and measured the light, temperatureand the sound of certain areas using alogit and a quadrat. We learnt thatthere wasn’t really a pattern but thehighest light rate had the most plantcoverage, then we drew some leaveswe had identified and had lunch.

When lunch had finished we walkedover to Loves Wood and looked for allkinds of organisms, we found amillipede, a centipede, lots of ants andspiders and a massive slug. We alsotalked about the positive and negativeimpact of humans on the woodland.

The trip was a great day out and Iwould highly recommend it to the Year7 students for when they are in Year 8.

My World of Atoms!By Luke Canney 7h/Sc1My World of Atoms is an addictive game for bothAndroid and iPhones. The game is based aroundcollecting elements from around the playing field bymining through blocks and crates. Once you havecollected elements you go back to your ‘Laboratree’and react the elements into compounds such aswater, methane and francium fluoride to name a few.

You can ‘level up’ your drill by making compounds. Different areas of your playingfield use stronger blocks which require better drills. As you mine your drill gainsheat, if it gains too much heat it will overheat and be rendered useless, the onlyway to cool down your drill is to go in the shade of your ‘Laboratree’.

The game is housed in a nice indie game style shell, with a nice modern andcontemporary look which should keep it alive for some time.

You can read more about My Wolrd of Atoms athttp://www.myworldofatoms.com/

Saturday morning saw more than a few sleepy faces emerging from rooms for anearly start, but the cobwebs were soon blown away with the first sighting of theiconic Eiffel Tower as we pulled in for a sightseeing boat trip on the river Seine.

Bathed in sunshine, the students were treated to stunning views of Paris’ manysights including: the world famous Louvre art gallery, Notre Dame Cathedral and theoriginal island from which the city of Paris grew. From the Eiffel Tower we took theshort journey up to yet another iconic site; a short walk along the worldfamous Champs Elysee saw jaws drop yet again as we arrived at the Arc deTriomphe, a lasting memorial to France’s imperial past under Napoleon and morepoignantly the final resting place of the unknown soldier; a permanent reminder ofall those who lost their lives in the First World War and subsequent conflicts.

Following some time for reflection we were on the move again to feed some veryhungry faces at the Hard Rock Café. A lovely relaxed and social lunch was had by alland was timed perfectly as a huge rain storm moved in, precipitating an earlyreturn to the hotel for some well-earned rest before a night time tour of Paris.

Sunday morning arrived in a blur of energy and excitement as the moment thateveryone had been waiting for arrived; Disneyland! Despite some less than clementweather spirits were high as students arrived and took in their first glimpse of theMagic Kingdom. The morning was spent in the Disney Studios, enjoying the thrillsprovided by rides such as the Tower of Terror on which some amazing expressions ofshock and surprise were expressed. Following a quick bite to eat the attentionshifted to the main Disney Park where students were able to ride Space Mountain, meet their favourite Disney characters and watch the feast of movement, music andcolour that is the Disney Parade. There was just enough time to visit the huge arrayof gift shops before heading back to the hotel for one final evening meal.

Monday morning saw a very tired but happy coach head back home to Stevenage. The students were an absolute credit to themselves, their parents and the school soa big thank you must go to them for their conduct. Finally, a massive thank youmust go to Miss O’Reilly, who worked tirelessly to ensure that everything ransmoothly and that a fantastic time was had by all.

When I was in Year 7, I performed in the LionKing. That was my favourite show ever. Suchbrilliant acting from all the students, and thechoir and the band were incredible. This yearMiss Jones and Miss Bishop came up with afantastic show of Billy Elliot. At first when Ifound out that we were doing Billy Elliot I wasunsure if I wanted to audition because Ididn't know the storyline. But when we weregiven the scripts and took to the stage Iloved it. It is such a powerful show to perform andthe songs are so passionate.

By Aadam Shah`It was an amazing production to perform andthe cast were so kind’ - Casey Hockey (Clipboard woman)`I loved watching it, it was a great production’ -

Megan Anderson. `AWESOME, BRILLIANT, AMAZING! I loved everyminute of it. It was great to see so many of ourstudents enjoying their performances! A brilliantshow!’ - Mr HardimanCongratulations to all the students and staffinvolved in the Barnwell School production ofBilly Elliot. The show engaged and held theaudience from the opening scene right throughto the highly charged `Once We Were Kings’ finale with powerful refrain of `We All Go Together When We Go’. The performers captured the changing emotions from theanger and despondency felt by families andcommunities affected by the pit closures in the1980s and the heart-warming story of a youngboy who was encouraged to pursue his dancing talents through commitment and ultimately to success. Dancers, musicians, actorsand the whole production team take a bow,you did a great job! - Mr Barnett

Reward Trip On Sunday, 10th July I had the pleasure of taking 62 KS3 students and 9 staff toThorpe Park for the day. The students earnt their invite by being in the top 30students in their College in terms of their Behaviour for Learning grades. This was afantastic achievement that fully deserved a fun day out! The weather started out abit damp but it ended up being a beautiful, sunny afternoon.

The students (and staff) had fun on the thrilling rollercoasters such as Collossus,Nemesis Inferno, The Swarm, Detonator, Saw – The Ride and Stealth to name a few. There were also the slightly less hair-raising attractions such as I’m a Celebrity GetMe Out of Here and of course the brilliant water rides such as Storm Surge and TidalWave! There were lots of drowned rats walking around trying to dry out in theafternoon sun!

Everyone had a great time and our students were incredibly well behavedthroughout and were a total credit to themselves, their families and of course toBarnwell School. Well done to everyone who came and I look forward to seeing asmany of you as possible invited on next year’s trip.

Year 10 Network TripYear 10 students have been studying networks and the internet, andvisited the school network infrastructure. Here is what they have learnt:

At the back of every computer in the school a copper CAT6 Ethernet cable is pluggedinto the computers NIC (network interface card), this card enables the computer toprocess information from the network. This cable then runs into a socket on the wall andfrom that socket, a plastic casing neatly hides away the wires that then run through theceilings and under the ground for up to 90m (its maximum range) it then plugs into arack of switches hidden away in locked cupboards. Each switch, computer and wire islabelled with a number to easily fix a problem. The switch then relays the information tofibre optic cables (these cables have a much longer range, up to 2 km) that continue torun under the ground until they reach the server room.

There are two air conditioners placed inside the server room in order to keep the serverscool and working properly. If the servers were to overheat, it would have the risk ofgoing down causing many problems on the campus.

Student - Onyl Calpatura

Everyone in the school shares one Internet connection and mine can't even handle twopeople on it!

Student – George Meywes

We also learnt the benefits of the school utilising the use of a network. The school savesmoney on printers meaning that one printer is shared in a classroom as opposed to thirty, one for each computer. We can also utilise the schools file server to efficiently have teachers share resources with the students by putting their files in the shared area.

Student – Joshua Crawford

The school has a star topology network where it has a central connection point referredto as a hub-node. A failure in the star network cable will only restrict access to the computers that are connected using that cable and not cause the entire network to fail.

Student – Nora Pikoszky

E-SAFETYYear 7 were given the task of creatingan e-safety movie aimed at primarychildren, so they could know how touse the internet safely.

They first started to plan their movieout, on a word plan sheet, writing thenumber of transitions, adding picturesthey would use and also the text theywould enter with the images.

Next they started to use movie makerto make the movie, they started with atitle, with a background they made orfound on the internet, and then theystarted to create their story on theirmovie.

Once they had finished their moviestory they started to add music andeffects and their poster, they started tochoose music depending on how theirmovie style was, whether it was upbeator depressing, next they added effectsto make the advert interesting and tokeep the watchers’ eyes on it.

Here are some of the quotes that havebeen said:

Reem said ‘it was an interesting andfun topic’Paige said ‘this topic was interesting aswe got to learn many new things suchas how to create a movie.’Danni said ‘it was a deep and strongtopic that I enjoyed making a movieabout.’Sophie ‘it was helpful for us in everyday life as we live in a time ofsocial media.’

This season we have gained manynew members including ArchieCrosier, an ex-Thomas Alleynesdriver. Four of our members (KyleBonner, Ryan Glenister, CharlieWinson and Joe Webb) passedtheir licencing tests with flyingcolours recently. With Kyle, Ryan andCharlie waiting for the 2016/17 season to begin, Joe couldnot wait to race, so joined us on the 11th June at Fulbeck where he gained hisfirst licence signature. On this day, our Team Captain had a nasty crash whichlanded her a 4 day stay at Lister Hospital due to a suspected fracture in her hip. However, all was clear and the National Championships were on their way!

On the 30th June, four of our team members visited Dorchesterfor the 3 day NationalChampionships event. Wearrived and started to set up ourcamp for the weekend. Thenight was full of excitement asthe next day was the first raceday – although it was only atest day, excitement levels werestill soaring! With a late night

and an early start the camp arose shockingly well. We had our catering team (the3 mums of the camp) cooking up a storm, the bacon and egg rolls went down atreat leaving us all powered up for the day. The test day had left us all ready forthe start of the championship weekend as we had managed to sort out most ofour set-up issues and get us use to the track. After the practice was a corporateendurance race where teams of 3 would compete against one another for the corporate title! As a club, we had a team entered which consisted of 2 ex-NatSKAdrivers and a parent, they managed to finish 6th overall.

On Saturday, 2nd July the weather was not on our side again as it was on and offrain all day. However, this did not spoil anyone’s chances as the day went swimmingly

leaving everyone ready to smash the last day ofthe championships - and smash it they did!

I am absolutely delighted to say that we havetwo Championship winners within the team!Archie Crosier finished the season earning a 6thplace title and number 16 to use next year ,Cheyenne Davies finished 10th earning number20 to use next year, Harrison Francis finished15th and Samuel Forbes finished 23rd.

As Team Captain I would like to say a massive well doneand thank you to everyone who has been involved with the team this year. We

really would not be in the position that we are now without you all. This year hasbeen fantastic and I cannot wait for next year!

We welcome anyone from Years 7-10, if you are interested please feel free to talkto Mr Reavell or Mr Hull. By Cheyenne Davies, Team Captain.

University ofBedfordshire‘CommunityDance Day’

On Monday, 9th May, Year 9 and 10dancers visited the University ofBedfordshire with Miss Blackwell, along with other schools toparticipate in the ‘CommunityDance Day’. We were given threeworkshops to participate inthroughout the day. The first was aninstallation piece created by secondyear UOB Dance & ProfessionalPractice students that focussed onour own personal journey throughschool and beyond. This type ofimmersive experience wassomething very different to whatwe had done previously and hadnever experienced how liveperformances change as we makedecisions -exactly like our futureschange when we make certaindecisions!

We then had two technique andcreative workshops exploring twodifferent themes. The first wasabout the idea of being attached toa bungee cable and moving apartand towards a partner. The secondwas all about combining differentdance styles. Both workshops werehigh energy and we definitelydeveloped our creative skills!

Overall we had a really interestingday out and experienced lots ofnew things that we hadn’tpreviously – we hope we will getmore opportunities to do things likethis again in the future!

Dance Celebration 2016!On Thursday, 19th May, Barnwell Dance department hosted its annual DanceCelebration. This year we had student performances that included students fromYear 7 all the way through to Year 13, with over 120 people involved! A numberof the pieces included were entirely choreographed by students for exam work, particularly the sixth form pieces, as well as student development of class workphrases lower down the school and a wide variety of extra-curricular work,

demonstrating the high levels of dancetalent that we have here at Barnwell.

During the day of the show groups ofstudents were given the opportunity towork off timetable to create and rehearsetheir group dances, showing lots ofenthusiasm and teamwork. FromGobstoppers to Street Dance, ribbonwork to Car Man garage mechanics theyall worked really hard to produce theirperformances and were also lucky

enough to perform to over 130 Primary school students in a matinee performancewhich the primary students absolutely loved to watch!

The evening performance was a greatsuccess. All the dancers performed witha high level of energy, maturity andcommitment – for some it was their firstever experience of performing on astage with an audience andprofessional lighting! The show was asell out with over 200 parents, carers, friends and family coming to watch!

Miss Blackwell and Mrs Triggs wouldlike to say a massive thank you andwell done to all the students thattook part in the Dance Celebration. You all did a fantastic job and wehope that you will all be backperforming next year to make it aneven bigger event!

Sport StudentsLead the Way

On Thursday, 9th June I had the pleasure of taking 20 Year 10 BTEC Sportstudents to Ridlins for a day of Sports Leadership experience. Barnwell studentshad been specifically requested by the Stevenage Sporting Futures team due toour history of providing exceptional young leaders to support younger studentsat sporting events. On this occasion it was the Stevenage Primary SchoolAthletics Festival and, as expected, our students did not let us down; they werefantastic role models.

Throughout the course of the day Barnwell leaders were given various leadership roles and responsibilities, such as officiating field events, coachingyounger students and many other jobs that helped to ensure that the day runsmoothly. The young leaders were a credit to Barnwell PE Department andsome were even selected to be track judges for the finals in the afternoon; arole that is only given to the very best. Congratulations and thank you to all ofour students who helped to make the day a success.

Time to saygoodbyeOne of the sad things about the end ofthe school year is that it’s time to saygoodbye to staff who are leaving. Thisyear the PE department have beenfortunate enough to work alongsideMr Smith and Mr Keast, who have bothplayed an integral part in our PEprovision this year, particularly on ourMiddle Campus.

Following a successful first year inteaching Mr Keast has decided to takesome time out to travel around theworld delivering sports and activities ona cruise ship. We will all be sad to seeMr Keast go and hope that he sends ussome postcards!

Ex–Barnwell student Mr Smith joined usin September as a Level 2 SportsApprentice. His energy and enthusiasmhas won him a lot of fans this yearamongst both staff and students.

As well as being a coach and form tutorhe has also been a positive mentor forstudents and has been a part of manyaspects of school life at Barnwell. MrSmith is travelling to America to pursuea career as a football coach and our lossis certainly their gain.

On behalf of Barnwell PE staff andstudents I’d like to thank both Mr Keastand Mr Smith for their contributions tothe department and the school this yearand wish them the very best of luck intheir futures.

CalypsoCricketA huge well done to our Year 8boys Calypso Cricket Team whomade it to the final of this year’sNorth Herts Competition.

Excellent bowling andaccomplished batting saw theteam win a string of matches totop their group comfortablyunder the watchful eye of MrPatching. An outstandingsemi-final display against a hotlytipped Knights Templar teamensured that our boys progressedto the final, where theyunfortunately lost to anoutstanding Hitchin Boys side.Great performances from thewhole team left them and theirteachers with a huge feeling ofPRIDE.

Our Year 7 team also producedsome excellent cricket in their tournament and were unfortunateto just miss out on a place in thesemi-finals; finishing second intheir group behind the clearfavourites for the tournamentHitchin Boys A. The boys wereunfortunate to face the favouritesin their very first game. Althoughwell beaten, the team bowledwell and maintained a great teamspirit throughout. The highlightwas a very close final group gameagainst JHN, which saw RyanGarbutt retire on 25 runs and JackWells hit the penultimate ball tothe boundary to win us the game.

Our Year 9 team also won theirgroup this year and progressed tothe semi-finals thanks to someexcellent team performances. They were unfortunate not toprogress to the final, losing to astrong Hitchin Boys side.

Exceptionalindividual performances came from OliverBirch (Shot Put) and Alex Pickard (100m).

District League Years 9 & 10/11The District as a whole was extremelycompetitive at these age groups and as ateam we found it more difficult this year. With many key competitors injured, orinvolved in revision groups, the team wereoften short from their best and did notquite reach their projected potential. However, there were some excellentindividual performances from studentssuch as: Steven Obeng (Long Jump),Joshua Roache (Hurdles), Harry Hacobian(Javelin), Abigail Pickard (Hurdles /TripleJump/Pole Vault), Tyler Mitchell (HighJump), Luke Sugden (1500m) and JarradMcCoy (Discus).
