And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:2 NLT)

Another year is dawning! Dear Father, let it be, In working or in waiting, another year with Thee; Another year of leaning upon Thy loving breast,

Another year of trusting, of quiet happy rest.

Another year of service, of witness for Thy love; Another year of training for holier work above. Another year is dawning! Dear Father, let it be

On earth, or else in heaven, another year for Thee.

(Frances R. Havergal, from The Celebration Hymnal ©1997 by Word/Integrity Music)

During my youth I recall singing this hymn almost every New Year. Here we are again at the beginning of another year. Traditionally, this is a time for taking stock of where we have been and for setting some goals and plans (and, yes, making some resolutions) for the year ahead. Many of us are getting all our paperwork together to prepare our 2016 tax returns. Some will be making decisions about adjustments they might make in withholdings and investments. Some of us will be getting ready for some big changes in our lives for this coming year: high school graduation and decisions about continuing education; college graduation and first “real” jobs; some may be making wedding plans or expecting additions to their family. One thing for sure, the coming year will bring some changes for all of us: some desired and some not. In all our evaluating and planning let’s not forget to take a good hard look at where we are and where we would like to be spiritually. It’s what Paul is challenging us to do in these verses from Romans 12. Paul is calling us to take a good hard look at our lives spiritually. These two verses are a call, first, to renewed commitment, a commitment to be worked out as our minds are transformed by a whole new way of thinking and behaving (ie: a call to change). Paul, first, calls us to give our bodies, meaning everything we do physically including our work, our leisure, our resting; to honor God in our living. This, Paul says, is our “living sacrifice” – something we’re really doing, not just thinking or talking about. It’s a call to make a decisive commitment to action for God. It’s in this total giving of ourselves, Paul says, that we truly worship God. In our living, we will live out and demonstrate Christ’s love, Christian hospitality, care for others and care for God’s creation. In other words, this is a call to act Christian. Second, Paul calls us to give our minds to God and, in doing so, to resist the pressures of the world. He is calling us to be changed from the inside, to be transformed as our minds are renewed into a mind obedient to Christ. But it is not we who change ourselves. This change comes about by allowing the Holy Spirit to work in us, shaping and changing us into the image of Christ. As we give ourselves over to the Spirit’s control our minds are transformed from a worldly way of thinking. We’re being called to think Christian. Finally, Paul calls us to surrender our will to God’s will, because even if we have committed our bodies and minds to God, our will still has the force to do what we want. It is in the commitment of our life and in our change in attitude that we learn God’s will and find the power for living out God’s will for our lives. We are all in the process of being changed, of being formed spiritually every day, because every action, every thought, every decision, every emotion and every reaction, little by little, is shaping us. True worship is offering up our whole selves to God every day, body, mind and spirit: constant commitment, constant renewal and change.

Another year is dawning. For each of us may it be a year of living for Christ. —Pastor Dennis

S A V E T H E D A T E S !

P aul is coming to the Tuesday evening women's study! Beginning

February 21 and continuing through March 28, "Paul, Apostle to

the Nations" authored by Stephan J. Binz, will be the text as we look

forward to a transforming experience with the Word of God. The heart

of Paul's teaching is the experience of union with Christ. We live in

Christ; Christ lives in us. In the resurrection, we live a new life which

involves a new way of seeing, of being, of living. As a new creation

"in Christ," we are incorporated into the saving community, the body

of Christ. This is a community in which boundaries that divided people are broken down, in which

distinctions among people no longer matter. As Paul speaks to us, he speaks a message of "grace and

peace." When we extend grace to and make peace with one another, we offer a powerful witness of Christ

to our world. Save the dates for this contemplative study of Paul.

W ith another great year behind us, I am excited that 172 boys and girls will receive shoebox gifts from

Spring Creek. We also played a part in collecting a total of 2,384 shoeboxes from the community.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make

this possible. From donating items, wrapping

or folding shoeboxes, sponsoring shoeboxes,

packing cartons or loading the truck. It would

not be possible without everyone doing a

small part to make a difference for kids

around the world to receive the greatest gift

of all, the love of Jesus. Thank you again for

your overwhelming support of OCC.

Collections for 2017 will start in March.

Blessings - Sue Albright

Resolutions for those who follow the Light of the World, the Prince of Peace, who said: Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, forgive the guilty, welcome the unwanted, care for the ill, love your enemies, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

La Verne (Calif.) Church of the Brethren members in mid-December concluded two weeks of keeping vigilance in support of students at a nearby Islamic Center and school, after the center received a threatening, anonymous letter. The last day marked the accompanying of children as they arrived at the school, and the last afternoon vigil as the Muslim congregation completed their Friday afternoon prayers.

A group of church leaders are promising to fight against hate speech in Carlisle, Pa. including Church of the Brethren minister Maria Bieber Abe. The group formed after a Lutheran minister “reached out to a group of pastors early in November to organize a meeting where a joint statement could be drawn up denouncing hate speech and informing those violated that there was support for them within the borough.”

Elizabethtown (Pa.) Church of the Brethren has written a letter of support and encouragement to a mosque in Harrisburg that has received one of the threatening, anonymous letters that have been sent to various mosques and Islamic centers around the country. Some members from the Mechanicsburg Church of the Brethren also have been volunteering at the mosque, serving as protectors for the Muslim community there.

KEEP ON PRAYING

On April 14, 2014, Boko Haram abducted more than 270 girls from a school in Chibok, Nigeria. The school is a descendant of the first school in Chibok begun in the early 1940’s by Brethren, and first run by Nigerian Brethren and American Brethren working with the Church of the Brethren Mission in Nigeria. Approximately 60 girls have escaped and in 2016 the Nigerian government negotiated the release of 21 with help from the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Swiss government. Continue prayers:

--for the Nigerian religious community to have courage, to maintain their faith, to not give in to retaliation, and to trust in God’s saving power.

--for the reassurance of God’s love for each girl and each of the families.

--for encouragement and direction for Nigerian church leaders.

--for God’s conquering love to transform the kidnappers.

--for help, aid, hope and courage for all involved in the Nigerian church crisis.

WASHED CLEAN: Your morning shower can do more than cleanse your body. Retired pastor Norman Neaves takes time to remember his baptism daily.

“As the water is pouring down on me, I reach up and get water all over my hand. Then I close my eyes and make the sign of the cross on my forehead. ‘I have been baptized in Christ,’ I say to myself quietly. ‘This day belongs to him. I am called to be Jesus’ representative whatever I am doing and wherever I might go. Give me the grace, Lord, to represent you well and with integrity.’”
