Let us pray...Good and gracious God, you blew into our nostrils

the breath of life. You are the One to whom

we owe our very existence. Give us the courage to take that unpopular position of protecting

those who have no voice, the unborn child in the womb

to the person taking his or her last breath. The life you have given us is a gift beyond measure.

Embolden us to speak the truth about protecting the child, the elderly, and the one without a voice

in the public square. With thankful hearts,

we ask all this of the One God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Wedding Feast at Cana John 2:1-11

"Do whatever he tells you." Last week we read about St. John the Baptist baptizing Jesus in the Jordan River. God called John to announce that Jesus was the true Messiah. John also called the people to repent and turn away from sin. In doing this, John fulfilled the call God had for him during his earthly life.

In fact, after baptizing Jesus, John spoke his final words of witness stating that he was not the Messiah. He followed up by saying these interesting words, “So this joy of mine has been made complete. He must increase; I must decrease.” John meant that his purpose in life was to call the people to follow Jesus. He was saying my job is done; I have completed what God asked me to do. Now, I must decrease in im-portance, and all of you are to follow Jesus, not me . . . Jesus is our Savior, and he is to increase . . . his way is the way to eternal life.

In today’s gospel, Mary makes a similar announcement as we read:

“There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee . . . . When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said

to him, "They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to

the servers, "Do whatever he tells you.”

Like St. John the Baptist, St. Mary knows that her importance is to decrease now. She has fulfilled God’s call to be the mother who cared for Jesus. She recognizes that Jesus is grown and ready to begin his ministry. Even though Jesus says, “My hour has not yet come,” Mary, as only a mother can know, knew that it was time for Jesus’ ministry to begin with a miracle for all to witness. So, she turns to the head wine steward and says the last words we hear her say in the Bible, “Do whatever he [Jesus] tells you.” Then Jesus obediently turns the water into wine . . . just as today he turns the wine into his blood for us to receive at Mass!

John the Baptist and Mary have similar messages for us to-day. We are being asked to decrease . . . to not think of our-selves as most important, but rather to put God and others first. John and Mary ask us to become humble and Christ-like so that others will see and feel Jesus’ presence when they are around us. In order to do this we have to ‘do whatever Jesus tells us’. When we decrease and follow Jesus’ way, then we allow others to experience Jesus’ love for them. They then will want to become like him, too. So, let us each take Mary’s words to heart, and, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.”

As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms.

When you think of being Catholic, what do you think of? Perhaps you grew up with your only associations being fasting, nuns with rulers, and "Catholic guilt." Our faith can sometimes have the connotation of restriction and absence, not abundance. Who is God in your life? Is He the divine law-giver, the judge punishing the rule-breakers? These are certainly attributes of God. But the laws don't exist for themselves alone. They exist to help us love one another as God loves us. And this loving God is the author of abundance and joy.

Did you hear today's Gospel? "There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee." Here at this wedding, Jesus would perform "the beginning of his signs...and so reveal his glory." This first sign isn't a miraculous healing. He didn't raise someone from the dead. He kept a party going! "There were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty

gallons...the water...had become wine." The wine has run out. Jesus creates somewhere between 120 and 180 gallons to help his friend save face. We may not have such momentous miracles in our lives, but God is watching out for us. The string of green lights when you're running late. The sale on the replacement appliance you need. The friend who calls at just the right time. These are the little moments of God's abundance. We just need to look for them!

Not only does Jesus surprise, but the guests point out to their host: "You have kept the good wine until now." The divine wine is better than the earthly variety. God's goodness is better than what we can grasp at for ourselves. Isn't that how it always goes?
