Snow didn’t keep the Class of 2015 from traveling to Aurora for February’s Leadership Cayuga day. Sue Edinger, General Manager of the Inns of Aurora, extended a warm welcome to the Aurora Inn, host for the morning program. Sheila Myers ’13, of Cayuga Community College, guided class members through exploration of their leadership preferences based on the work of Clint Sidle, in his book The Leadership Wheel. Based on the wisdom of 5,000 years of indigenous people, Sidle teaches that we each tend toward a primary approach to leadership (Warrior, Visionary, Nurturer, Critical Thinker) and spend our lives “walking the wheel”; gaining knowledge and understanding in all directions. Effective leadership, Myers explained, is achieved through an awareness of one’s own leadership and personality tendencies and a willingness to work collaboratively toward goals.

Leslie Rose McDonald returned for her tenth consecutive visit with Leadership Cayuga, to share her knowledge of Emotional Intelligence with the class. McDonald references psychologist Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., researcher and author of Emotional Intelligence. Her presentation outlined the value of developing reflective listening skills, and provided valuable advice on how to handle difficult conversations we encounter in our workplace, including roles as supervisors or team leaders. McDonald is Founder and President of Pathfinders CTS, Inc., a provider of career development and transition services for professionals in central New York, offering employee career development throughout the professional life.

The afternoon session on Emotional Intelligence was hosted in the Sullivan Center for Business & Entrepreneurship in the newly renovated Zabriskie Hall on the Wells College campus in Aurora. Laurie Turo ’09 helped coordinate the details, and Rich Kloster ’03 is Manager of The College Store, located on the main floor of Zabriskie Hall.

Thank you for the opportunity to serveBy Daniel Lovell

As of March 6, I will be retired as chair of IGNITE and as member of the IGNITE Steering Committee. The change comes with my 40th birthday, and I’ve spent the past several months reflecting on my time with this in-credible group and all we’ve accomplished.More than that, I’ve lately felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I’m extremely grateful the steering committee gave me the opportunity to serve as its chair. I’m grateful to the Chamber of Commerce for supporting IGNITE for the past decade. And I’m grateful to the community and our members for encouraging us along the way.I’m especially grateful to Hilary Ford, my dear friend who first dragged me into the IGNITE fold, and to Monika Salvage, who was an excellent example of hard work and leadership. Trish Ottley showed we should always think big. Chrissy Cornell has been my right-hand man for the past couple of years and Maureen Riester has been my conscience and confidant. Every steering committee member contributes so much to the organization. It’s a group ef-fort, and one I’ve been very lucky to shepherd. I must thank Connie Reilley from the BID for her constant support. And, of course, I can’t thank Cham-ber Executive Director Andrew Fish enough for his guidance and his faith throughout my tenure.I’m extremely proud of our accomplishments over the past few years. We’ve built upon the very strong foundation laid over a decade ago by sticking to our mission of enhancing the value of living and working in Cayuga County, looking beyond ourselves as young professionals and finding ways to make our community a better place. With that in mind, we began the IGNITE the Vote campaign to help increase voter turnout in local elections. We started the popular IGNITE the Winter event to bring the community together. We added the voice of the young professional to the Emerson Park master plan process, began an ambassador program to help introduce the community to young professionals who are new to the area, and we headed up a successful United Way campaign. We’ve raised funds for very worthy community organizations, and we helped install new welcome signs in the city. These ideas weren’t mine. They came from the thoughtful, intelligent young professionals of IGNITE – an ad-opted family I’ve been proud to call mine.I’ve always believed young professionals aren’t just the new kids in the workplace who need more training. I believe they’re brilliant, energetic minds who deserve attention. They’re talented and capable and worthy of being heard. I’m heartened to see so many community organizations reach out to IGNITE when they need new board members, and I believe the work of IGNITE has played a large role in elevating the public perception of young professionals in this community. I’m excited to see what the future holds for IGNITE under the leadership of Jon Wilcox, who is taking over as IGNITE chair, and although I will no longer be a member of the organization’s leadership, I plan to remain a member for a long time to come. IGNITE has driven me, amazed me, challenged me and helped shape me. Thank you so much for the opportu-nity, and best of luck. I am, and will remain, your biggest fan.

Did You Know...What is Behavioral Interview and how to prepare for a Behavioral Inter-viewThere is a common saying that; “The most accurate predictor of future performance is past performance in a similar situation.”

Behavioral interviewing, although a relatively new concept, is a widely used interview technique. This process is widely used by employers to judge a candidate’s experiences and behaviors in order to determine their potential for doing a certain task on which the company’s success depends on.It is said that behavioral interviewing is 55 percent predictive of future on-the-job behavior, while traditional interviewing is only 10 percent predictive.

A behavioral interview can start with any of the following phrases:Tell me about a time when you…Describe a circumstance when you were faced with a problem related to…Think about an instance in which you…Tell me how you approached a situation where…A behavioral interview consists of a set of questions based on which the interviewer evaluates the employee’s be-havior that is desired to match the job profile.

BBI tends to evaluate the key skills and actions of the candidate. This in turn helps to assess the technical and performance skills needed by the company.

Following are some of the BBI questions that are commonly asked:

Based on Action orientation/self-motivation:What did you do to make your job more interesting? What is the best way to motivate you?In what ways did you think yourself as capable of doing your job?

Based on environment of the job:Tell me about a situation in which you had to overcome an obstacle to complete a project. How will you handle more than one project at a time?Give some examples with references to your last job that showed your ability to be flexible.

General Questions:What are your most important responsibilities in your current/last job?Describe yourself. What do you find most satisfying about your current job? What do you find least satisfying? How did you reach the decision of leaving your current job?Why did you choose this field? What are your salary expectations? This will help the HR management team make the interviewing process more smooth and quick.

Public Policy Institute Unveils New Resources for Employers, Recaps 2014 Education ForumsALBANY, N.Y.—The Public Policy Institute of New York State (PPI) today unveiled new resources to serve as guides for businesses in navigating the new education standards and recapped five regional forums surrounding business engagement in education.

In addition to Common Core Standards: What Every New Yorker Needs to Know and Partnering with Schools for College and Career Readiness: Resources for the New York State Business Community, which were published by PPI this past summer, regional “spotlight” pieces on business-education partnerships in the Capital Region, Southern Tier, Mohawk Valley, Hudson Valley and Finger Lakes, as well as an in-depth Power Point presentation by education expert Allison Armour-Garb, are also now available on PPI’s website.

“Businesses across the state rely on the education system to prepare students for careers in the 21st century economy. Unfortunately, as evident by the growing skills gap, there is a disconnect between what students are learning in school and what they need to know to succeed in the work world,” said Heather C. Briccetti, Esq., president and CEO of PPI. “It’s crucial that business play a greater role in partnering with local schools in order to create a robust pipeline, and support quality education standards with real-world applicability.”

“The percentage of jobs requiring post secondary education has more than doubled in the past four decades, and is expected to keep growing,” said Michael Petro, executive vice president of the Committee for Economic Development of The Conference Board (CED). “By adopting high-quality educational standards in K-12, states commit to providing their students with a stronger foundation for higher education and ultimately, their careers.”

The Committee for Economic Development of The Conference Board (CED) last year provided PPI with a grant to conduct regional forums in order to provide employers with information on the skills gap and regional public-private partnerships, and for the development of a toolkit to serve as guide for both businesses and parents who want to learn more about the Common Core standards.

To date, a total of 67 pre-event surveys and 49 post-event surveys have been collected from participants at the forums during five outreach events:

According to the surveys collected, two-thirds of the respondents considered themselves either very or some-what familiar with the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards prior to attending the events. More than half had a positive impression; one-third had a neutral impression; and 15 percent had a negative impression coming in. After the event, 82 percent of respondents reported that they felt more informed on the standards, with the rest reporting that they felt somewhat more informed.

Almost all participants (93%) believe that it is important for business leaders to have a voice and be involved in the dialogue about how high standards connect to college and career readiness.

Visit www.ppinys.org to view the complete survey results and access the new resources.
