Pastor’s Corner:Many of us look forward to Homecoming and Revival each year. Many old friends and relatives
make a special effort to join us for worship and the potluck after Homecoming is the best all year (andthat’s saying something!).
Elsewhere in this newsletter (pages 5&10), you will find information about our Homecoming andRevival Preachers. Each of these persons is involved in non-traditional ministries. We have been a partof the work at Shalom Farms at Westview, and many people have expressed a desire for more“contemporary” aspects of worship. I hope that we will be energized by the work that is being done andperhaps we will be inspired to think “outside the box” of tradition worship and ministry as we serve Godin the Gum Spring area. Come and be blessed!
As you have noticed, we have had a lot of interest and excitement in the church. We’ve hadnumerous visitors who want to see what God is doing at GSUMC. I hope that you have taken time tointroduce yourselves to these friends that we don’t know yet.
While it’s a bit in the future, we will be holding a “Back to Church Sunday” on September 18. Wewill have a potluck afterward and invite those who are new to the church to come as our guests. Thisis also a great time to encourage your friends and neighbors to join us for worship.
These two items are not unrelated. As we look forward to new, larger facilities, we will need to thinkbeyond our current ministries and we will also need to make sure that we are bringing people along withus. We need to engage newcomers in the life of the church, moving them from “visitor” to “activemembers” – not only for them to support the current programs of the church, but to help us see beyondour usual patterns and find new ways to be in God’s service here in Gum Spring. At the same time, wehave to remember the people and activities that made us who we are, and be certain to carry that historywith us forward. God is doing great things here and I want us to share those blessings as best we can.
See ya Sunday!

New in the Library by Patti Royster
Have you been intrigued by the “Heroes of theFaith” pages in the bulletins on Sunday? Have you everwondered what it would be like to be a missionary? Ifso, check out the library’s featured new additions forthis month, The End of the Spear, available inpaperback and DVD. This is the autobiographicalstory of Steve Saint, who returned to the Amazonjungle in 1995 with his family to live among theWaodani people. Decades earlier, when Steve was just5 years old, his father had been brutally killed byWaodani warriors when he was serving in Ecuador as aChristian missionary. This is Steve’s story as he seeksto learn to fully trust God through terrible danger, greatloss, and remarkable joy.
Look for this and other recently cataloged items(from your previous donations) on the top shelf of thebook stack on the immediate left as you enter thelibrary (a.k.a., the Sanctuary Class room). Sign out anyitems you wish to borrow in the notebook found on theback wall of the room. Return borrowed items to thelabeled box located on the first bookshelf beside thedoor. Please note: there is only one copy of mostitems, so please return borrowed items as soon aspossible so that others may use them, too.
Thank you for your continued patience as the
Vacation Bible School provided bible lessons, crafts, and fun for all ages the week ofJuly 24 – 29. Chef Basil and his sidekick introduced the secret ingredient that wouldbring us closer in our relationship to God. Each person was challenged to ready forGod, give happily to God, believe fully in Jesus, remember Jesus often, and celebrateGod forever. GSUMC was transformed into a café that included real dinnerfurniture and signs. On a personal note, I would like to thank everyone who helpedwith teaching, crafts, snacks, music, recreation, storytelling, and dinners. If it werenot for you Vacation Bible School would not have been a success. I would also liketo thank everyone who participated each evening. You made my job easy. Thankyou once again for an awesome experience.
Do you have a used computer you coulddonate to the church library? To preparefor the potential growth of the library inthe new church building, the database ofcataloged resources will be going digitalin the coming months.

The Story About Four People
This is the story about four people, Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was
sure Sombody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought
Anybody could do it. But Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when actually Nobody asked Anybody.
Thanks to Ben Isbell for this little story.

Evangelism Training
October 6, 5-Talent Academy EvangelismTeaching Event will be held at Oak GroveUMC, 472 N. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake,VA 23320. The cost is $25.
As the Virginia Conference envisions
churches where all God's people are welcomed at
table, the Division of Evangelism seeks to help
congregations extend invitations to all people, so
that the un-churched will know there is a table
where they will be welcomed and fed. Resources
are available to help congregations be invitational,
and to help people learn how to share their faith
with those who do not yet know Christ. This is
being accomplished in several different ways.
Through the use of consultants and training,
churches from throughout the conference are using
components such as radio and TV spots, a
direct-mail Neighbors newsletter, and a plan of
neighborhood invitation to the local church to
reach out to the un-churched in their particular
communities.
One resource is a ministry known as Natural
Church Development. This is designed for
churches of all sizes, cultures, and settings, who are
seriously committed to growing. The premise
behind this ministry is that participating
congregations will do in-depth self analysis, which
will show them the area of ministry that they will
need to focus on over the next 18 months, in order
to become a healthy congregation. What has been
uncovered in this work is that healthy churches
grow.. naturally. The key is to become a healthy
congregation.
Sharon Yago is our Evangelism Leader.
She and Becky Bruce will be attending this
training and gathering ideas. If anyone else is
interested, contact Sharon at 457-2113 or the
office at 556-3494.

Faith Development Ministry Team
Welcomes Steve Eaton
as its new Coordinator.
We have a need for ideas around what our
Wednesday night program should be. One
thought would be dinner and a movie. A
coordinator is needed for that program regardless
of whether it is held on Wednesday night.
Our Sunday School Director - Gail
Anderson - is looking for ways to make Sunday
School vibrant for all involved and how to
involve more children and their parents.
FYI
Our oldest church member is about to celebrate her 103 birthday on August 6. Below is a briefrd
history of Hilda Parrish as shared by her daughter Patsy Griffin for the Envoy at The Meadows
Newsletter.
“Born on August 6, 1908 at LaVallee, near Irwin, in Goochland County, she was the last of threechildren born to Martha ‘Pat’ Isbell Alvis and James Henry Alvis. Her brother, Nelson, and sister,
Mabel, preceded her. Her father, who loved farming, was farm manager at LaVallee. When she was
six years old, her father purchased Strawberry Hill Farm at Sandy Hook, a 300-acre farm, where they
grew all the food they ate. The only commodities bought at the store were coffee, sugar, pepper, salt
and vinegar, with the vinegar being used for medicinal purposes. At the age of six, Mrs. Parrishattended a little one room school at Sandy Hook and later attended a two-room school. Upon
completion of the seventh grade, she was informed that the eighth grade would be taught at Othma
School. For a year, Mrs. Parrish rode her pony to and from school, until a new high school wascompleted in Sandy Hook. She was the first student to receive her diploma out of a class of fifteen
students. The main source of cash in those days was from the tobacco that was raised and sold on the
farms. The men would cut the tobacco, strip it, and tie it in bundles and using wagons, they wouldtransport it to Richmond. In those days a typical trip to Richmond would take four days from the
Goochland area, unless the weather was bad, then mud would sometimes mire up to the hubs of thewagon wheels, making the trip longer.
Folks loved to hold dances in their homes, and Mrs. Parrish enjoyed dancing. She said shee doesn’tthink she ever missed a dance. She and her sister became very popular as dance partners of young
men at the dances. They were known as the ‘Alvis Girls’. Shortly before her graduation she met herhusband, Tim Parrish, at a ballgame. They married February 11, 1928 and had five children, Evelyn
Williams, Myriam Phyllis, James Phillip, Patsy Anne, and Nancy Williams. Patsy Anne is the sole
surviving member of the five children. . . Her husband worked for the Virginia State HighwayDepartment, but decided that he loved Goochland County too much to keep moving around with the
camp. He was a mechanic and had a shop at George’s Tavern and operated a sawmill.
After Mr. Parrish passed away in 1964, Mrs. Parrish took classes at Richmond Professional Institute, currently VCU. She worked for Reserve Life Insurance Company for a short while then became
secretary at Goochland Elementary School until 1978 and was a receptionist for
Norman’s Funeral Home. She volunteered at Meadows Nursing Home
teaching sewing, working in the office and various other duties. She is a life
long member of Gum Spring United Methodist Church and was active atMizpah Christian Church. Mrs. Parrish has lived through World War I, World
War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, several other
disturbances in between, including the attack on American soil. During WWII
she was a plane-spotter, at a little building in George’s Tavern, reporting every
