The Department of Transportation Brevard Operations in Cocoa is part of the state agency that handles issues relating to Florida's state road system. The overall mission is to provide a safe transportation system that ensures the mobility of people and goods, enhances economic prosperity and preserves the quality of the state's environment and communities. 

Some of the functions of the local transportation off ices are: provide oversight of road and bridge construction projects; handle maintenance and repair issues on our roadways; issue driveway, drainage, utility and special events permitt ing; and provide contract oversight for contractors that handle other maintenance issues such as mowing and tree trimming.

The Cocoa off ice also has the Adopt-a-Highway program for sponsoring clean-up of our roadways and memorial markers to recognize the importance of safety while traveling along our roadways.

The site of the new Brevard Operations Facility at 555 Camp Road in Cocoa consists of several buildings w ith ample employee and guest parking. A prominent element of the site is the circular driveway (Artwork Site 1) leading to entrance of the Administration Building.

The Administration Building itself is V-shaped w ith its entrance located at the inner joining of the two w ings. Florida Native Landscaping has been utilized throughout the site.

The canopied front entrance to the Administration Building consists of a glass storefront entry wall w ith double glass doors.

Through the double entry doors is a small lobby area w ith seating on the right. On the left, the receptionist sits behind a bank teller w indow. Opposite the entry doors is another glass wall w ith one glass door opening to a hallway that leads away left and right to off ices, conference rooms, storage, etc.

Just to the left of the receptionist area, there is a narrow wall available for artwork (Artwork Site 2). The wall to the right of the entry doors w ill have seating but is ineligible for artwork as it has a f ire panel box and pull stations. Through the glass wall opposite the entry, visitors w ill be able to see artwork displayed on

two more walls (Artwork Sites 3 & 4).

4 ARTWORK SITES

Sit e 1: The grassy circle inside the driveway that leads to the entrance of the Administration Building is

30 feet in diam et er .

The Art Selection Committee for the Cocoa Operations Center would like to purchase or com m ission a

sculpt ure for this area. Electrical cable for lighting the artwork is already in place. Send images of existing

sculptures available for purchase; prices must include delivery and installation. Or, for commissioned

work, send images of previous work that might be similar. All sculptures must be of materials that will survive

for years in Florida's heat and humidity.

Sit e 2: Inside the small lobby, just to the left of the reception window is a wall 8'h x 44"w.

Sit es 3 & 4: Visible from the lobby through the second glass wall are two walls 8'h x 44"w.

The Committee would like to purchase exist ing ar t work for Sit es 2, 3, & 4. They are open to any type of

2D artwork or wall sculpture that will fit the space and any themes appropriate to the facility and its

surrounding community. All 2D work must be protected by sturdy frames and delivered ready to hang.

Prices for existing work must include delivery or shipping.

Send the follow ing four (4) items:

1. Statement . A brief Letter of Interest that explains why your artwork is perfect for this project and how your submitted images address the project requirements. If you are submitt ing for a commission, this should not yet be a site-specif ic proposal.

2. Resume. A brief, current professional resume, emphasizing public art experience, public collections and public commissions.

3. Images. Send a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 digital images. Images should be in .JPG format w ith a minimum resolution of approximately 800x600 pixels and be no more than 1MB. The f ilename of each image must match the follow ing format: the artist 's last name, then the corresponding image number from the ID Sheet, and f inally the artwork t it le (use representative words of a long t it le). If the image is a "detail," please indicate that as well. Be sure to put a zero in front of numbers 1 through 9. Example: Smith_08_PinkHeron_det.jpg

Make sure that your images are sent in the same order as listed on the ID Sheet. The f irst f ive artworks presented w ill receive init ial review. Because the init ial review is a "blind" review, no identifying information should appear on the images. Don' t forget to provide the committee w ith details/close-ups of large or complex artworks.

4. Image ID List . Include image identif ication pages that provide, for each submitted image: a thumbnail image of the work, the image number, the t it le of work, the medium, the dimensions, the date of the work, andthe price of the work or amount of commission. The ID List must be headed w ith the project name and the art ist 's name, address, phone number, email address, and website.

All artists who have reached a certain level of expertise and recognition in their medium may participate in Florida?s Art in State Buildings Program. Their resumes

should illustrate that they have met two of the following criteria:

1. the artist's works are included in private, public, corporate or museum collections;

2. the artist has received awards, grants or fellowships;

3. the artist has completed other public commissions on a similar scale;

4. the artist has participated in exhibitions at major museums or galleries.

Your Image ID List should include:

a. thumbnail image of the work,

b. image number,

c. t it le of work,d. medium, e. dimensions,f . date of work andg. price of work or amount of commission.

- If the committee is considering a purchase, be sure to indicate on your Image ID List which of your artworks are currently available.

- Prices for existing works must include delivery or shipping costs and works must arrive framed or ready to install. The selection committees have no "extra" funds for framing or shipping.

- Use a relatively large font for your Image ID List, as the ASB Administrator will likely print out the sheet(s) and read the information aloud while the Committee members are viewing the images in the dark.

- Do not present your Image ID Sheet in "landscape" format.

Submission Tips Selection committees may review hundreds of artist submissions. Please make their task easier by considering these tips.

- Carefully read the description for each of the submission items so that you can be sure to include all required information in the appropriate format.

- It is important to include the prices of your work and/or the budgets of commissioned projects. If a committee are unable to determine if your artwork is within their budget, they may bypass you.
