Harmony Day Last weeks Harmony Day was a wonderful celebration of cultural diversity. Our highly engaging Cultural Infusion Program saw the whole school participate in a full day of performances from around the globe. Children learnt about the rhythms of the Tabla (Nepalese drum), watched and joined the dynamic performance of the Taiko drummers, created their own beat on the African drums and sang along and danced in French. Then in the finale, they all enjoyed the vibrant Chinese lion dance. The students had lots of fun learning about and celebrating cultural diversity. Thank you to everyone for participating and supporting this special day. It was a celebration of multiculturalism that reflects our diverse BBPS population. Particular thanks go to the Byron Bay Parents and Citizens Association who funded the day and to Lyn Evans and Libby OConnor who organised our special Harmony Day event. Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Surveys Tell Them From Me 2019 (student feedback survey) for Years 4-6 students will focus on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. The feedback will assist schools to improve student learning outcomes and measure factors that are known to affect academic achievement. More information about this Department of Education and Communities initiative is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents Earth Hour Earth Hour is on Saturday 30 March between 8.30pm - 9.30pm. Earth hour is to raise awareness of energy use in the community. During Earth Hour, switch off your lights, televisions, computers and so forth and make use of candles, flashlights and other battery operated or hand-cranked devices. Earth Hour doesn’t have to last only an hour - you can extend it for as long as you like. While not using electricity you can talk to each other, play a game (board games, cards or charades), make shadow puppets, tell stories, go for a walk together, go outside and do some star gazing or catch up on some sleep. BBPS students will be taking particular care in their use of power this Friday in recognition of Earth Hour. School Protocols Please note that school grounds are not the forum for parents to approach other parents to discuss and promote personal agendas and beliefs. Those wishing to do so, need to do it off site away from school in a manner that other parents do not find offensive or upsetting. We have a School Community Charter that was published in our first newsletter which outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff to ensure;

Collaborative, respectful communication. Our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive. We all treat each other with respect. A BIG thank you to the 99% of our amazing parents who already abide by this part of the charter. Please ensure that whilst on site or at school events beyond the school gates, you all abide by this charter.

Building Maths Skills at Home With a little creativity you can make mathematics a lot of fun. Here are some easy things you can do at home to help your chi ld with maths. There are many games you probably already have at home that encourage development in maths eg. Yahtzee (basic addition), Connect Four (problem solving strategies), Puzzles (spatial awareness), Card Games, Monopoly (money) & Battleship (coordinates). There are lots of educational maths games on the internet, try visiting Copacabana School’s website. Look in the Get Smart section for graded activities. Early stage one is for Kindergarten, Stage One is for Years 1 and 2, Stage 2 is for Years 3 and 4, while Stage 3 is for Years 5 and 6.Talk about the calendar and dates with your child. Make it exciting by looking forward to special events. It can be fun for them to count the weeks and days until birthdays or to see what day of the week a specific holiday will be on, either this year or next year.

You can help your child learn to count money by playing ‘shopping’ with them. Use real coins and let them be the cashier. Use an empty egg carton as a counting tool to practice addition and subtraction skills up to 12. Simply place an object/s in slots and use the empty slots to count up to/from 12. Introduce time - Tell them that they can play a game at a certain time. Begin with easy times (7.00 pm) and get progressively more difficult (7.30 pm and 7.45 pm). Cook with your child. Read the instructions on the back of the box or in the recipe and allow them to measure the ingredients. You can develop a better understanding of fractions by discussing equal parts with your child. Any time you have a pizza it is an opportunity to discuss the concepts of whole, halves, quarters and eighths. Making flashcards of basic addition of subtraction facts can be an easy way to practice. You can make it a game by seeing how many they can answer in a minute. Anytime there is a project at home that involves measuring centimetres and metres, let your child help. This allows them to understand that the concepts they are learning at school have real world applications. Point out shapes and discuss them.

I have not been at work for the last couple of weeks as my mother had to have open heart surgery and this came about at very short notice. There were post surgery complications which are still in the process of being resolved but she is now on the mend and making steady progress. Thank you to those of you who sent messages of support, it was very much appreciated.

Until next time, Linda Trigg Principal. Silent Disco Fundraiser We are very excited to host our Silent Disco day next Tuesday 2 April. This day will be all about sharing the love and joy for Luka. Please remember to return your notes and wear ORANGE or disco clothes for Luka. Money raised from the Disco will go towards supporting the Monroe family and also purchasing and maintaining band instruments. Families wishing to make a larger donation to the Monroe family can do so via the office and SRC students will have collection buckets out in the playground in the morning. Band News Come and have your say at the Band Meeting - 3.30pm Thursday 28 March in the Band Room. Look forward to seeing you then. Cheryl Year 4 Excursion 10 - 12 April (Week 11). Notes are now overdue. Please return these to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. The excursion information evening is next Tuesday 2 April at 5.15pm in the school Library.
