Creative Things are Happening Year 1 students have been learning about the artist, Henry Matisse. Students used coloured paper and cut out shapes of natural objects like flowers, leaves and animals to create their artwork. Pictured is some beautiful work created by Isaac 1S, Goldie 1A and Naia 1C.
Students are Transitioning Back to School It made our day to see the students as they started transitioning back to school. Words can not explain how excited staff were to see them. We are looking forward to the day when all students have returned to school and we can go back to classes as normal. We really miss having all of our students present at school, engaged with their learning.
Growth Mindset Belief ‘Children who understand that the brain can get smarter – who have a growth mindset – do better in school because they have an empowering perspective on learning. They focus on improvement and see effort as a way to build their abilities. They see failure as part of the natural learning process.’ Carol Dweck, world expert on growth mindset. Byron Bay Public School is on a three year journey to embed a growth mindset belief into our learning culture. A growth mindset is an underlying belief about learning and intelligence. The belief is that with effort you will learn and that there is no ceiling to your potential. Theodore Roosevelt quoted, ‘You can’t choose your potential, but you can choose to fulfil it.’ You may have already heard the students talking about a growth

mindset. They may have made comments like, ‘I can do it’, ‘Mistakes are how I learn’ or ‘I’m in the learning pit’ or even mentioning the power of the word yet, as in ‘I haven’t mastered that yet’. On the other hand, fixed mindset comments may be along the lines of, ‘I can’t do it’, ‘It’s too hard’ or ‘I’m not smart,’ which can have a negative affect on learning and one’s self worth. We want our students to know about the benefits of a growth mindset and all that it has to offer. Staff and students have been building a foundation of knowledge about growth mindset and how it impacts on learning.
New Interactive Boards Our new CommBoxes have arrived, they are the very latest in interactive smartboard related technology. We have come a long way from the days of teachers using a blackboard at the front of the classroom. A BIG thank you to our amazing P&C for providing the funds to purchase 4 of the 5 new CommBoxes. They are touch sensitive, student friendly interactive boards and our staff love using them.
Managed Return to School for Next Week School will probably remain the same as this week, unless we are instructed otherwise by the Department of Education, with students in attendance one day per week.
Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Student Feedback Survey This term, our school, like many others in the state, will participate in a Department of Education’s initiative: the ‘Tell Them From Me’ student feedback survey which measures the engagement and wellbeing of primary students in Years 4, 5 and 6. Students have the opportunity to complete the online surveys over the next three weeks. Please encourage students in Years 4, 5 and 6 to take the time to complete the survey which closes on Friday 29 May. The data collected helps to identify school strengths and areas for improvement, as well as assess the impact of current initiatives and inform future directions. It is also a follow up from our previous year’s surveys which will serve as a tool in measuring our progress. Parents will have the opportunity to complete the TTFM surveys in term 4. This is the website: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/login.htm. Students have been sent their unique access code and password from Mrs Hogan. This is not their usual log-in and password. If students could please complete this survey at home, it would be appreciated as we no longer have an adequate supply of laptops for students to do this task at school. If students would like to opt out, please let us know. If you have any questions please email Mrs Hogan.
Kiss and Drop Off Area in Tennyson Street After ongoing negotiations with council, it has been decided that a temporary kiss and drop off zone will be put in place in Tennyson St on the north eastern side of the pedestrian crossing, on the side closest to the school. Thank you to the council for agreeing to and setting up the temporary kiss and drop off zone. In order to get the council to agree to this, I had to ensure them that parents would not use this space as a parking area. Please abide by the kiss and drop off guidelines which are attached.
No Sharing of Food Please do not send birthday cakes in to school to be shared with other students. Whilst it’s a lovely thought we have been instructed not to let the students share any food.
What happens if my family decides that it’s best to keep the children at home? At this stage that’s fine, as long as you are engaging in online work through Google Classroom or physical work packages, you will be marked as flexible attendance (not absent). If we have no evidence of students engaging with learning at home, they will be marked as absent. This only applies for as long as we continue to provide learning from home as an option.
Latest from the Department of Education Based on information and the latest medical advice and research from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) Guidelines, schools are safe for students and staff to continue with a staged return to school. We will continue to reinforce enhanced hygiene practices in line with Department of Education guidelines. The school has spent thousands of dollars on purchasing additional hand soap and paper towels, along with disinfectant and other hygiene requirements. Additional cleaning time and enhanced cleaning practices are in place.

School Stream App Since the outbreak of COVID-19 and the change to schooling arrangements, we have been using the School Stream app more frequently to keep our parents up to date. If you do not have this free app on your phone, you are missing out on important school messages. I urge all parents to download this free app if you haven’t already done so. We are happy to be of assistance if you are not sure how to do it.
