Childhood-Theodor Seuss Geisel was born March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts -Theodor’s middle name and his mother’s maiden name are the same! His middle name was Seuss.-Did you know he named one of his books about the street he grew up on?! It was called Mulberry Street. -He left Springfield as a teenage to attend Dartmouth College
Adult Life-To Please his father, Theodor studied English at Oxford University in England after Dartmouth College-His first wife’s name was Helen. -They met at school-His wife was also became a children’s author and book editor-After returning to the U.S. Ted began to pursue a career as a cartoonist!-He created advertising campaigns for Standard Oil for 15 years.
Writing Career-Theodor’s Mother, Henetta Seuss Geisel, often got her children to go to bed by reciting rhymes!
-Because of this Ted thought it was because of his mother that he had the ability and desire to rhyme. -Theodor started using the pen name Dr. Seuss after getting kicked off the Dartmouth College literary humor magazine
Writing Career Continued
- And to Think I saw it on Mulberry Street, Dr. Seuss’ first published book, required a great degree of persistence – it was rejected 27 times-With the release of The Cat in the Hat, Dr. Seuss became a definitive children’s book author and illustrator
The Cat in the Hat
-Defined Dr. Seuss’ Career-This book only had 225 words in it!-Dr. Seuss didn’t become a household name until The Cat in the Hat in 1957-In 2003, The Cat in the Hat the movie came out.
Green Eggs and Ham
-One of Dr. Seuss’ best selling books-It was first published on 1960-In 2001 it was the 4th bestselling English language children’s book of all time! Wow!-Did you know he only uses 50 different words in this book?!
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
-Published on November 24, 1957-The television animated movie special come out in 1966-The feature film starring Jim Carrey came out in 2000-The book and movie give the overall lesson that Christmas is too commercialized.

-And to Think That I saw It On Mulberry Street was inspired by a boat ride from Europe-Oh. The Places You’ll Go! Published on January 22, 1990, was the last book Dr. Seuss published before his death-Great Day for Up was the only book published under Dr. Seuss’ real name Theodor Geisel-You’re Only Old Once, released on Dr. Seuss’ 82nd birthday is a picture book for adults.
