LONDON RENAISSANCE QUIZ

ARCHITECTURE: ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRALThe church was dedicated to apostle Paul. It was build in 1675-1710 by

Christopher Wren. It is one of Europe's largest Cathedrals, the dome reaching 366 ft. The cathedral was made with a new building material in the renaissance, brick. It is the second largest dome in the world following Michelangelo's St. Peters Basilicas dome. London spent 40 million dollars trying to restore the cathedral.

ART:• Hans Holbein the younger was a famous painter from Augsburg Germany born in 1497

and died in 1543 in London. After training in his fathers studio in Augsburg, he moved to Basel Switzerland where he worked on house decorations portraits and wood cuts. When he was 29 he moved to England or two years he met Sir Thomas more, he painted portraits of him and other people there. He moved back Basel for four years to finish up the work that he left in England. Finally he moved to London where he was the official court painter under King Henry the eighth until he later died. Hans also played a large part in the designing of stained glass windows for rich famous people like the Humanist Erasmus. He created the designs for forty one wood cuts called the dance of death. But, his most famous painting is called the ambassador, painted in 1533 it was painting on a piece of oak using oil paints.

DISCOVERY: SCIENTIFIC• Sir Isaac Newton was a philosopher, mathematician, and most of all scientist. He

theorized the three laws of motion and the law of gravity. He also invented infinitesimal calculus. Isaac newton also theorized the idea of light and color. The first law of motion was called law of inertia if it is at rest it will stay at rest unless an unbalanced force acts upon it, and a body in motion will stay in motion in the same direction and speed unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. The second law is acceleration, that happens then a force acts on a mass, the larger the mass the more force it takes to accelerate. The third and final law is, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

LEGACY:

• London tower, although it started its planning and building in 1000 it was revised and rebuilt several tomes through the renaissance and more modern times. It was also called his majesties royal palace and fortress. It is located on the north bank of the river Thames. Created at 1066 part of a Norman conquest. Used as a prison for almost 1100 people at all different times. In 1350 it became a fortress for London.
