1. Cutting your material

Cut one piece of knit fabric 29" wide and 13½" long.

With right sides facing and the 13½" long sides aligned, fold the hat in half. Sew along the 13½" edge with a ½" seam allowance.

2. Press the seam allowance open.

3. Starting at the seamline, mark the hat’s top edge every 7".

4. Fold the hat’s top edge as shown, matching up all the marks from step 3.

5. Draw the hat’s top seams on each folded section as shown starting ½" below the top edge’s center and ending at the side 3½" from the top edge. Curve the seam as shown. Don’t worry about making each one perfect.

6. Sew each top edge’s seam along your chalk line. Trim off the seam allowance to ¼".

7. Draw a line on the hat’s right side 3½" from the bottom edge. Align the lace’s bottom edge with this line and pin in place.

8. Sew the lace to the hat along the lace’s top and bottom edges.

9. Fold under the hat’s bottom edge 1½". Sew it in place close to the raw edge, leaving a 2" opening.

10. Cut a piece of elastic as long as your head’s circumference. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread it through the hat’s hem allowance.

11. Make sure the elastic isn’t twisted inside the hat and sew the edges together, overlapping about 1". Push the elastic inside the casing and sew it closed.
