Key TermsBy: Kyla

Intensive FarmingOLarge amount of labor, machinery, and fertilizers used on small farms.Extensive FarmingOType of farming in witch small amounts of labour, machinery, and fertilizers are used on large farmsAgribusiness OAgricultural business. Operations include growing, storing, processing, and distribution. It may be owned by a large corporation, a family, or an individualSustainable agricultural OApproach to agricultural production that can be maintained indefinitely without harming the environmentOrganic farmingOAgricultural without the use of chemicals, antibiotics, hormones, or genetically modified organisms (GMO’S) and does not damage the environment

Criticism against the industryby: Kyla

There are many people that love farming for its natural resources and what farming can do for the economy. However, farming is being criticized for what they are doing to genetically alter their livestock and for how companies are choosing to farm.

GMOby: Kyla

•After the GMO fertilizer is spread onto the crop, the altered cop affects the bacteria they are exposed to. This affected bacteria will have a negative impact on birds and animals they are exposed to.

• GMO also known as Genetically Modified Organisms is any organism that has been genetically modified to improve the performance of the crop or livestock

• Modified organisms are created when scientists transfers a gene from one living thing to another in order to bring in wanted characteristics to the plant or animal

• GMO can affect human health and the environment

• The GMO fertilizers can kill the surrounding bacteria in the causing natural resources in the soil to die off.

Corporate farming by: Kyla

• This type of farming causes problems when they release the waste into waste storage bunkers. Sometimes the bunkers overflow causing the waste to go into the near by ponds, streams, lakes and water table. This can cause unsuitable drinking water and area lakes and rivers to be unsuitable for swimming.

• Corporate farming is when companies own or influence farms and agricultural practices on a large scale

• The growth of corporate farming has had a negative impact on the existence of smaller family farms because corporate farms operate on a much larger scale allowing these farms to operate at a lower cost per unit of livestock or crop. As a result, smaller family farms cannot compete with the larger corporate farms and go out of business.

• Corporate farming, therefore, can eventually cause a higher unemployment rate in rural areas because of the demise of these family farms.

• Corporate farming has a large affect on the environment, economy, and the animals that they raise.

Criticism against the industryby: Kyla

What do the aboriginals think about this?

OThe aboriginals believe that overall that corporate farming and some other types of farming are disturbing their way of life.

What are people doing to change the problems?OThere are groups that have started campaigns to change the negative impacts on farming. Some of these groups are:

O PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals)O Greenpeace

Strategies that the industry/ government has done to increase the sustainability of the Business of

Farmingby: Kyla

Things that the government have done:

Established Marketing Boards OThey set the prices of the commodity that the market buys at

CFIA (Canadian food inspection agency)OThe CFIA insures food safety along the entire food distribution channelOThey make sure that the food is safe as it goes down the food distribution channel

Lower tax rate OThe government lowers there tax rate so the farmers are able to invest into the farm and keep it running

Subsidies OSubsides are the monies that government gives the farmers in order to maintain there farm

Farming: It's importance to Canada

By: Jordyn

O About 20% of people contribute to the everyday work within the agriculture community which in further explanation includes the production of crops and animals which is at about 1.4% in Canada's GDP (Gross Domestic Product.)

O Agricultural trade plays an important role in the importance of agriculture because trading with other countries brings in the profit for the Canadian framers.

O Us Canadians rely on our framers to produce inexpensive products so that after all of the expenses for transportation, processing and profit are added all of the in store expenses are still in an affordable range; because of the high demand for farm fresh products in the 1950's Canadians were having to spend about 25% of their everyday income on food; today we only spend about 11% of our everyday income.

O All of the factors mentioned here are very important to the country of Canada, it is all important because of the everyday costs and job sectors because without all the farming that is done secondary industries would not be able to produce much of anything at all.

Farming: The different hotspots By: Jordyn

First there are seven different classes of farming hotspots but they are better classified into excellent (Class 1), Good (Class 2,3), Fair\Poor (Class 4,5,6) Unsuitable (Class 7.)

Farming: The different hotspotsBy: Jordyn

British Columbia: 50% Unsuitable

46% Fair\Poor3% Good

1% Excellent

Western Canada: 56% Fair\Poor

35% Good 7% Unsuitable

1% Excellent

Central Canada: 62% Unsuitable

20% Fair\Poor 14% Good 4% Excellent

Farming: The different hotspotsBy: Jordyn

Based on the statistics given Western Canada is the #1 hotspot within Canada with British Columbia as the runner up. Not many places in Canada have rich agriculture but they do have some good soil to grow good quality fruits and vegetables.

Successes of FarmingBy: Brenan

Successes: OLarger farms with higher skilled workers in the industryOUse of organic farming OSpecialized farms OWide variety of wheat and crops OMore cost effective transports provincial and internationalOBrings in money for economy OHealthy food policies

Page 15: By: Kyla, Brenan, Jordyn, and Steven The Business of Farming

Difficulties of farmingBy: Branan

Difficulties: OUse of chemical pesticides OSupply of produce is lowODiseases of plants and animals ODistribution systems are undevelopedOFarmers are not getting enough money to pay for their farms

Page 16: By: Kyla, Brenan, Jordyn, and Steven The Business of Farming

Factors that affect the success of farming:

By: Brenan

Climate system: precipitation and heat input limits what is grown

Soil system: -too little moisture causes insufficient humus developstoo much moisture loses nutrients caused by leaching

Biological system: -helpful organisms such as bees improve farming destructive organisms such as insect pests damage farming

topographic system: land that is levelled with high water table can be waterlogged

FactsBy: Brenan

Canada has dropped from 3rd to 9th in the world for total food exports. In 2010, over 30% of Canada’s farms lost money instead of making. Two main strategic priorities for farmers are lowering operating costs and improving quality of the products in the market.Farm debt levels are increasing
