A single seat experimental VTOL fighter which was to be operated from small platforms of ships, three XFY-1s were ordered on 31 March 1951 with serials 138648/138650. Of these the first and third aircraft were used for static tests only whilst the second aircraft flew for the first time in VTO mode on 1 August 1954. The first full transition was accomplished on 2 November 1954. Difficulties with stability as well as poor engine performance caused the project to be abandoned.

The Sea Dart was a design of a delta winged flying boat fighter aircraft. In the development a great variety of configurations had been studied whilst the few Sea Darts that flew were used to tests various types of flotation gear. Reference sources pose a somewhat confusing picture as to the allocation of serials and designations. The designation XF2Y-1 was applied to aircraft with serials 137634 and 137635, of which only the former flew, the first flight being on 9 April 1953. The latter was cancelled on 14 October 1952 although other sources have suggested it was completed as YF2Y-1. The designation YF2Y-1 was used for four aircraft which were ordered on 19 January 1951 with serials 135762/135765. They were fitted with 2 Westinghouse J34-WE-42 engines. The first one, with serial 135762, flew for the first time in the spring of 1954. 135763 and 135764 were also completed but 135765 was not completed. In addition X2FY-1 137634 was in 1954 converted as YF2Y-1 although other sources suggest this was 137635. Aircraft 135765 is now displayed in Lakeland, Florida. On 28 August 1952 the US Navy had ordered 12 production aircraft as F2Y-1 and with serials 135766/135773 and 138530/138534 all of which were cancelled in March 1954. A development for the USMC with either a Wright J76 or Pratt & Whitney J75 engine and designated as XF2Y-2, was never proceeded with. In spite of the fact that the Sea Dart had been cancelled in March 1954 and evaluation ceased in April 1957, the designation YF-7A was assigned to the YF2F-1 and F-7A to the F2Y-1 on 18 September 1962. Being similar to the PT-3 trainer of the USAAC, 76 were built as NY-1 with serials A7163/7202, A7205/7220, A7351/7360 and A8173/8182. The first flight was on 12 November 1925. Several NY-1s were converted for gunnery training as NY-1A whilst the NY-1B designation was assigned to a number of NY-1s (including A7193) converted to NY-2 standards. The NY-2 had a span of 40', 12.19 m and a R-790-8 engine and 186 were built with serials A7456/7525, A7693/7707, A7764/7795, A7970/7977, A8013/8017, A8183/8192 and A8360/8400. One was transferred to the USAAC with serial 27-176 where it was flown with Wright Field serial P-471. The NY-2A was a gunnery training version of which 25 were built with serial A8158/8172 and A8401/8410. The final version was the NY-3 which had a R-790-94 engine. 20 were built for the US Navy with serials A8487/8506 whilst one was supplied to the USAAC with serial 30-421. After the US Navy had acquired a single example of the Fleet model 1 for evaluation as XN2Y-1 and with serial A8019 (which was powered by a Warner Scarab engine), six N2Y-1s were procured with serials A8600/8605 to provide training facilities with the skyhook to be used with the USS Macon and Akron. At a later stage A8602 had its upper wing removed and a four bladed rotor fitted as well as a Kinner R-540 engine. It was designated as XN2Y-2 but was later redesignated as XOZ-1. Refer also to OZ

The XN4Y-1 was a version of the PT-11 trainer and three were procured with serials 9456/9458 for evaluation. The USCG acquired a single Y1PT-11B (32-395) from the USAAC which was fitted with a Wright J6-5 engine and operated it as N4Y-1. Its serial was CG10, then 310 and later V110. The Admiral was a military version of the Commodore flying boat. The US Navy ordered a single XPY-1 on 28 February 1928. Carrying serial A8011 it made it first flight on 10 January 1929. During the test flight programme the third engine was removed. Production of the Admiral was undertaken by Martin as the P2M. The US Navy did not adopt the name Admiral. Refer also to P2M, P2Y

A sesquiplane version of the PY design, a single copy of the three engined XP2Y-1 was ordered on 26 May 1931 with serial A8939. It made its first flight on 26 March 1932 and was later converted to a twin engined configuration as the third engine caused so much drag that the twin engine version performed better. The production version was the P2Y-1 of which 23 were ordered on 7 July 1931 with serials A8986/9008. Aircraft A9008 was re-engined with R-1820-88 engines and served as the XP2Y-2 prototype. All other P2Y-1s were subsequently similarly re-engined as P2Y-2. The P2Y-3 was similar to the XP2Y-2 and 23 aircraft were ordered on 27 December 1933 with serials 9551/9571 and 9618/9619. The designations P2Y-1C and P2Y-1J were applied by Consolidated to aircraft delivered to Columbia and Japan, whilst the P2Y-3A designation applied to Argentinian aircraft. None of these were procured through US military authorities. Refer also to PY

The US Navy ordered a single example of the Catalina flying boat on 28 October 1933 with designation XP3Y-1 and serial 9459. It flew for the first time on 21 March 1935 and following certain modifications, including improved engines, it was redesignated as XPBY-1 in 1936. The US Navy also ordered 60 P3Y-1 aircraft on 29 June 1935 which were fitted with R-1830-64 engines and received serials 0102/1061. These were redesignated as PBY-1 before the first flight on 5 October 1936. Refer also to OA-10, PB2B, PBN, PBV, PBY.

The XP4Y-1 designation was assigned to the Consolidated 31 Corregidor flying boat which had first flown with civil registration NX21731 on 5 May 1939. It was procured by the US Navy in April 1942 with serial 27852 and flew as such for the first time in July 1942. Production of 200 P4Y-1s with serials 44705/44904 was ordered in October 1942 but was subsequently cancelled.

P4Y-2G (Source: US Navy?)

In 1952 the P4Y designation was used for the Consolidated Privateer which had a span of 110', 33.53 m, length of 67'3", 20.50 m, had 4 Pratt & Whitney R-1830-65 engines and a max. speed of 303 mph, 448 km/h. In 1952 those PB4Y-1Ps remaining in service were redesignated as P4Y-1P whilst those PB4Y-2s remaining in service became P4Y-2. Known serials include 59646, 59657, 59695, 59704, 59742, 59763, 59852, 59872, 59876, 59884, 59896, 59905, 59923, 59937, 59946, 60001, 66277 and 66282. The latter were fitted with R-1840-94 engines. In a similar way PB4Y-2Bs were redesignated as P4Y-2B (serials 59813 and 59925) and PB4Y-2Ss as P4Y-2S (serials 59716 and 59992). In 1945 nine P4Y-2s were transferred to the USCG as P4Y-2G. They included aircraft with serials 59688, 59876, 59882, 66260, 66302, 66304 and 66306. The P4Y-2K designation was used for a number of P4Y-2s converted as radio controlled drones. They included serials 59758, 59759, 59872 and 59896. Those remaining in service on 18 September 1962 were redesignated as QP-4B. Finally the designation P4Y-2P was assigned to a photo reconnaissance conversion of the P4Y-2. Refer also to PB4Y, P-4.

Two examples of the XP5Y-1 Tradewind were ordered on 19 June 1946 with serials 121455/121456. Originally they were to be fitted with Westinghouse T30 engines. The first flight took place on 18 April 1950 and the second aircraft was never flown and was used for beaching tests and other ground tests. Development as a patrol aircraft did not take place due to changing requirements. The design evolved, however, into the R3Y. Earlier and probably unofficially, Convair had applied the designation XP5Y-1 to the Model 38 twin-engine B-24 development of 1942 as well as a tailless designed that was aimed at the PV replacement program. Two XP6Y-1s long range ASW flying boats were ordered on 10 September 1957 with serials 147206/147207 but were subsequently cancelled. The two jet engines were to be fitted in the centre engine nacelle.

After having been built and flown as the XP3Y-1, the aircraft, which carried serial 9459, was re-engined and redesignated as XPBY-1. 60 PBY-1s were ordered on 29 June 1935 as P3Y-1 and with serials 0102/0161 but were redesignated before the first flight on 5 October 1936. This was followed by a further order for 50 PBY-2s with serials 0454/0503, which order was placed on 25 July 1936. 66 PBY-3s with serials 0842/0907 were ordered on 27 November 1936. They were fitted with R-1830-66 engines. The PBY-4 version was fitted with R-1830-74 engines and 33 were ordered on 18 December 1937 with serials 1213/1245. In addition a commercial Catalina of American Export Airlines was impressed with this designation and serial 99080. The last PBY-4 (1245) was completed as XPBY-4 and was later converted as PBY-4 and then XPBY-5A, as an amphibian which flew for the first time on 2 November 1939. The PBY-5 was a flying boat aircraft with a length of 63'10", 19.46 m and R-1830-82 engines. Known to the RAF as Catalina IVA, 684 were ordered from 20 December 1939 with serials 2289/2455, 04425/04514, 08124/08549 and 63992. In 1941 US Navy aircraft 2290 was transferred to the USCG as V189. In January 1942 the VP-22 squadron operated six former Netherlands East Indies naval air service PBY-5s with locally applied markings 22-P-41/46. The designation PBY-5A applied to an amphibian version with R-1830-92 engines. 803 were built with serials 2456/2488, 7243/7302, 02948/02977, 04399/04420, 04972/05045, 08030/08123, 21232, 33960/34059, 46450/46638 and 48252/48451. A number were supplied to the RAF and the USAAF. The PBY-6A had a slightly larger span of 104'3", 31.78 m and a length of 64'8", 19.71 m and, in particular, a larger vertical fin developed by NAF. 175 were built with serials 46639/46698, 46724, 63993/64099 and 64101/64107 whilst production of aircraft with serials 64100, 64108/64441, 111149/111348 and 119779/119978 was cancelled. A single PBY-6A (64096) was converted as a staff transport with designation PBY-6AG. Refer also to OA-10, PB2B, PBN, PBV, P3Y

A single example of the Coronado was ordered on 27 May 1936 as XPB2Y-1 and with serial 0453. It was originally fitted with a single fin and XR-1830-72 engines and flew for the first time on 17 December 1937. Later twin fins were installed and the aircraft was delivered as such in October 1938. A small order for 6 PB2Y-2s was placed on 31 March 1939. They carried serials 1633/1638. One of these (1638) was re-engined with R-1830-88s and redesignated as XPB2Y-3. This was followed by a production order of 200 PB2Y-3s with serials 7043/7242. In addition 10 aircraft ordered as JRY-1 and with serials 02737/02746 were completed as PB2Y-3. The PB2Y-3B designation was used for 10 Coronados supplied direct to the Royal Navy. The PB2Y-3R designation was used for 31 aircraft (including 7049, 7089, 7096, 7133, 7216 and 7233) converted as 44 passenger transports and fitted with R-1830-92 engines. A single PB2Y-2 (1636) was fitted experimentally with Wright R-2600 engines and was redesignated as XPB2Y-4. The XPB2Y-3 (1638) was later converted as the XPB2Y-5 prototype and this was followed by the conversion of a number of PB2Y-3s to PB2Y-5 standards. These included 7044, 7051, 7070, 7072, 7075, 7132, 7152, 7160, 7167, 7195, 7221, 7225 and 7226. Further conversions of the PB2Y-5 included PB2Y-5H medical evacuation aircraft with 25 stretchers, also referred to as PB2Y-5R (including 7044, 7070, 7075, 7195, 7221, 7225 and 7226), and PB2Y-5F and PB2Y-5Z staff transports. Finally, aircraft 1638 was further converted as the XPB2Y-6. Refer also to JRY

The XPB3Y-1 (model 34) was the prototype of a long range flying boat for patrol and bombardment missions. A single example was ordered in April 1942 with serial 32386 but was subsequently cancelled in November 1942.

The PB4Y designation includes the navalised version of the Liberator as well as the progressive development thereof, the Privateer. The PB4Y-1, to which the above specification applies, was a version of the Liberator. 977 were transferred from the USAAF to the US Navy with serials 31936/32335, 38733/38979, 46725/46737, 63915/63959, 65287/65396, 90132/90271 and 90462/90483. Transfer of aircraft with serials 63960/63991 was cancelled. 64 PB4Y-1s were converted as PB4Y-1Ps for photo reconnaissance duties (including 46728 and 46737). In 1952 those remaining in service were redesignated as P4Y-1P. Other conversions included PB4Y-1F and PB4Y-1Z staff transports. The PB4Y-1Zs included 90155. In addition two PB4Y-1s were converted as assault drones in Europe. The first mission was on 12 August 1944 but failed. The second mission was in September 1944. The XPB4Y-2 version was fitted with R-1830-94 engines and a single tail. Three PB4Y-1s with serials 32086, 32095 and 32096 were converted as such and the first one flew on 20 September 1943. The production version had a length of 74'7", 22.73 m and was designated PB4Y-2 Privateer. 739 were built with serials 59350/59553, 59555/60009 and 66245/66324. Production of aircraft with serials 59554, 66325/66394, 66795/67054 and 76839/77138 was cancelled. Those PB4Y-2s remaining in service in 1951 were redesignated as P4Y-2. A number of PB4Y-2s were converted as PB4Y-2B or PB4Y-2M anti shipping missile launchers. The PB4Y-2Bs included 59367, 59407, 59504, 59595, 59752, 59754, 59759, 59762, 59772, 59776, 59814, 59822, 59859, 59881, 59887, 59888, 59914, 59925, 59934, 59944, 59971, 59976, 59988, 59989, 59990, 59995, 59996, 59997, 59998 and 59999. The PB4Y-2Ms included 59928, 59929, 59936, 59938, 59939, 59945, 59949, 59955, 59956, 59957, 59959, 59960, 59961, 59962, 59963, 59964, 59965, 59966, 59967, 59968 and 59969. Those remaining in service in 1951 were redesignated as P4Y-2B. Several PB4Y-2s were converted as PB4Y-2S with surface search radar. Serials included 59648, 59716, 59738, 59741, 59756, 59783, 59783, 59788, 59788, 59792, 59797, 59805, 59813, 59815, 59816, 59820, 59824, 59825, 59840, 59841, 59857, 59880, 59927, 59930, 59933, 59941, 59950, 59951, 59972, 59973, 59981, 59992, 60003 and 66267. The designations PJY-1 and PJY-2 have been associated with three Consolidated designs submitted in response to the US Navy’s specification SD-116-28 for a utility aircraft. On 4 January 1940 Consolidated submitted the BM-9 and BM-11 designs, with respectively a span of 55’, 16.76m and a span of 60’, 18.29m, with the BM-11 design having two engines. A further BM-12 design was submitted on 16 June 1940, a single engine aircraft which had a span of 55’, 16.76m and a length of 40’5”, 12.32m. There is no evidence to suggest that the PJY-1 and PJY-2 designations were official US Navy designations. Rather they appear to have been Consolidated’s in-house designations.

The RY designation applied to a US Navy version of the C-87 Liberator transport as well as a transport derivative of the Privateer. The RY-1 designation was used for three C-87As transferred from the USAAF to the US Navy. They had serials 67797/67799. Five C-87s were transferred as RY-2 and with serials 39013/39017. A further transfer of aircraft with serials 39018/39032 was cancelled. The RY-3 was based on the PB4Y-2 Privateer and had a length of 74'7", 22.73 m and R-1830-94 engines, as well as a single fin. 112 were ordered but only 40, with serials 90020/90059 were delivered, 90060/90131 being cancelled. The Consolidated 39 was a 48 passenger aircraft. One was built as XR2Y-1 and with serial 09803. It flew for the first time on 15 April 1944 and was later sold to American Airlines as NX30039. The production version was the R2Y-1 and although a number had been ordered on 20 March 1944 with serials 90132/90384, they were cancelled on 6 July 1944. Consolidated completed one of the aircraft with registration NX3939.

Developed from the P5Y design, six R3Y-1s were ordered on 16 August 1950 with serials 128445/128450. The first flight was on 25 February 1954. They had a capacity for 103 troops. The R3Y-2 version was an assault transport with a longer and upward folding nose giving it a length of 142’6”, 43.43 m. The first was converted from R3Y-1 128450 and the others were 131720/131724. The first one flew on 22 October 1954. The concept of an assault transport was eventually abandoned and the aircraft were modified as tankers. Refer also to P5Y

Derived from the commercial Convair 340, a transport for 44 passengers, the US Navy procured 36 R4Y-1s with serials 140993/141028. The first flight was on 29 June 1955. The R4Y-1Z was a VIP transport version with R-2800-103W engines of which one was ordered direct with serial 140378 whilst a number of R4Y-1s (including 140994, 141020 and 141021) were converted. In January 1958 two C-131Es were transferred from the USAF to the US Navy as R4Y-2 and with serials 145962/145963. The transfer of another 13 aircraft with serials 145964/145976 was cancelled. The R4Y-2Q designation was used for a projected radar counter measures version of which 5 were ordered with serials 145991/145995 but which were subsequently cancelled. Also cancelled was the R4Y-2S anti-submarine version which was ordered with serials 145977/145990 and the R4Y-2T version of which 6 were cancelled. The latter were included in the serials 145964/145976. The Vought TBU was built by Consolidated. 1100 were ordered as TBY-2 from 6 September 1943 but only 180 were completed with serials 30299/30367, 30369 and 30371/30480. The first flight took place on 20 August 1944. The serials of the cancelled aircraft were 30368, 30370 and 30481/31398. The production of 600 TBY-3s and TBY-4s with serials 118929/119528 (split up not known) was also cancelled. The TBY-1 designation was not used. Refer also to TBU

The Sentinel was used by the Marine Corps and 306 L-5s were transferred from the USAAF as OY-1 and with serials 02747/02788, 03862/04020, 60460/60507, 75159/75182 and 120442/120474. Transfer of aircraft with serials 02789/02790, 04021/04025 and 121415/121438 was cancelled. In December 1948 29 OY-1s were converted as OY-2s with modified equipment. Serials included 03893, 03912, 03919, 03922, 03924, 03932, 03939, 03951, 03982, 03983, 03991, 03993, 04001, 120454, 120455, 120463, 120470 and 120472. The US Coast Guard used six aircraft obtained from the USAF and US Navy from 1948 to 1958. The former USAF aircraft had serials 42-14870, 42-14970, 42-15025, 42-15060 and 42-98168 and were designated as OY-1 although some reference sources have suggested that some were redesignated as OY-1G. The sixth aircraft was OY-2 03937, sometimes referred to as OY-2G. Refer also to L-5, L-9, O-54, O-62, U-19
