by Ian Matthew I can’t believe this year has flown by and that summer is almost over. Although the best time of the year for the Bay is just about to come. September and October are my favorite months. First, I should apologize to all our members for not publishing the Westerlies this year (so far). That has been a mistake and although I had hoped to get printed copies of the Westerlies mailed out again, I just simply didn’t put aside the time needed to get it done. At least we have the Tidings to keep us up to date. Thank you, Jane and Carole! Although brief, let’s consider this a preview to what should be a quarterly publication mailed out to all members who wish to receive a paper copy. Second, we’ve had a very busy year. Our race calendar has been full, and we are seeing more participation in some of our events. Our cruise program, however, has been a disappointment. Many of our faithful cruisers have sold their boats, and we have struggled to get enough boats together. Perhaps next year…. And if you have a boat and have some ideas about where you would like to go, let us know! I need to express a big Thank You to our Vice Commodore, Tiffany Townsend, who has stepped up to acting Commodore while yours truly has been having fun crossing the pacific in the Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Kaneohe, Hawaii. This was an exceptional, fun event which had the potential for incredible results had it not been for the boom breakage just 500 miles from the finish. Thanks also to Tiffany for posting the messages I sent from Highlander on our Facebook page so you could follow along. Highlander is on her way back to TYC and is expected to arrive on Sunday August 26 th . We have some great events coming up! First is the “End of Summer Celebration” on Friday August 24 th . New member Chef Mark Furr is our new resident chef and he has been doing some delicious dinners for us on Fridays. He is Culinary Director at Culinary Arts and Music, and we have entered into an agreement with him to provide good, wholesome meals at a very reasonable price for members. We aim to use his skills as often as we can on Fridays and some Saturdays – so come along and enjoy his cooking. Bring your family, and relax; Mark does all the work! Friday August 24 th is not a race day, nor is it a general meeting, it’s just a meal and socialize day – so come and meet your fellow TYC members. Vol. LII No. 8 - August 2018

Vol. LII No. 8 - August 2018

Speaking of General Meetings, our next one is scheduled for October 5th. Mark will be providing a dinner for us and we will hold a short general meeting during the dinner followed by a presentation on the 2018 Pacific Cup by those TYC members who raced. Bob Horton, Dave Eichhorn and me on Highlander and Cameron Tuttle on Mirthmaker. The two boats experienced very different crossings. We plan on following this meeting over dinner format for our future meetings.

We also have two annual favorites coming up. The first is the Salmon Derby on Sunday September 9th. This is always a fun event and it’s easy to sign up - https://tyc.org/event-3015152. The second is the annual TYC picnic. We have had to change the date and at the time of writing we are looking at Saturday Sept 22nd, which will mean rescheduling the short-handed races. I hope to have more information very soon and I will post the details on our web site.

• Katie Allen and Tyler Ticen

• David Tucker and Sarah Channell who have just replaced a C&C 27 with a Catalina 36 (I think)

• Mark & Melody Schumacher

Say hello to them when you meet them at the club and introduce yourself.
