The New Works Initiative (NWI) is an Artist-in-Residence program and developmental platform in the Department of Theatre and Dance. NWI’s mission is to bring together established and emerging playwrights, composers, choreographers, theatre-makers, and professional directors with Montclair State University theatre to explore adventurous theatrical works. Production BiographiesGuadalís Del Carmen (Playwright), born and bred in Chicago, is an Ars Nova Resident Artist. Her plays include My Father’s Keeper (part of Steppenwolf Theatre’s The Mix), Bees and Honey, Daughters of the Rebellion (formerly titled Tolstoy’s Daughters, World Premier Montclair State University 2019), A Shero’s Journey or What Anacaona and Yemayá Taught Me (Yale Magazine 2019, Parsnip Ship Podcast plays Season 4), Blowout (World Premier Aguijón Theater 2013), Sucking on Cucumbers, Blue Wall of Silence, and Racial Science. Her work has been developed at UrbanTheater Company, ALTA’s El Semillero, Aguijón Theater, The Brooklyn Generator, and Montclair State University’s New Works Initiative, among others, and has participated in The Sol Project’s Solfest in New York City, the Latinx Theatre Commons Carnaval of New Latinx Work in Chicago, and San Diego Repertory Theatre’s Latinx New Play Festival. She was selected as part of a cohort for Berkeley Repertory’s 2019 Ground Floor Residency to devise a new play. Guadalís is a Seattle Public Theater’s 2017 Emerald Prize nominee and has been part of the One-Minute Play Festival in Chicago and New York City. She is an artistic associate of Black Lives Black Words and is a co-creator of the NYC Latinx Playwright Circle.

Melissa Crespo (Director) is a director of theater, opera, and film. Her recent production of Native Gardens by Karen Zacarías was co-produced by Syracuse Stage, Geva Theatre Center, and Portland Center Stage. She recently directed the world premieres of Wickedest Woman (Strange Sun Theater), graveyard shift (San Francisco Playhouse), Brother Toad (Kansas City Repertory Theatre) and ¡Figaro! (90210) at LA Opera and Off-Broadway. This fall she will direct the world premiere of charly evon simpson’s form of a girl unknown at Salt Lake Acting Company. Fellowships and residencies include a Time Warner Fellowship (Women’s Project Theater), the Director’s Project (Drama League), a Van Lier Directing Fellowship (Second Stage Theatre), and the Allen Lee Hughes Directing Fellowship (Arena Stage). Jorge (Louis) Medrano (Scenic Designer) is a senior and will be graduating with a BFA in Theatre Production/Design. He has a background in scenic painting; he was a painter for Civic and Humanities for Non-Majors and Mad Forest. Medrano also has

a background in carpentry and previously worked on Wedding Band as prop master. Daughters of the Rebellion is his first realized production at MSU.

Juliann Tallman (Costume Designer, Hair/Makeup Designer) is a junior at MSU majoring in BFA Theatre Production/Design with a concentration in costume design. Daughters of the Rebellion is Tallman’s first costume design at MSU. Other credits include assistant costume designer on The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Next year Tallman will be designing Ragtime at the Alexander Kasser Theater.

Ines Zapata (Lighting Designer) is a senior at MSU and has designed for dance and theater during her time in school. Her previous design credits include Works-A-Foot 2017, Danceworks 2018, and The Full Monty. Other credits as an assistant lighting designer include Works-A-Foot 2016, Danceworks 2017, and Anything Goes. Passionate about dance, she was a production intern at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in 2017 and is currently interning for Arc3design, a lighting design consultant firm in New York City. She aspires to become the lighting director for a dance company and tour with them. This is her last production here at MSU, and she is excited to be the next female Latina lighting designer in the industry.

Emily Frank (Sound Designer) is a senior Theatre Production/Design major at MSU concentrating in scenic and sound design. She scenic designed last year’s New Works Initiative production, Civics and Humanities for Non-Majors, and the most recent show, Orlando. She spent her past summer at the Utah Shakespeare Festival as a scenic artist and stagehand and is looking forward to freelancing this summer after graduation this spring.

Madison Sawula (Projection Designer, Assistant Scenic Designer) is a sophomore at MSU pursuing her BFA in Theatre Production/Design. Sawula has also worked on Civics and Humanities for Non-Majors (Prop Master) and An Ideal Husband (Lighting Designer) and, coming soon, The Rover (Scenic Designer) at MSU. Instagram: @sawulaaa

Kayla Chang (Production Stage Manager) is a junior at MSU in the BFA Theatre Department specializing in stage management. She previously attended Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she found interest in stage management before transferring to Montclair. Her first credit at MSU was the assistant stage manager

Cast BiographiesJesse Castellanos (Presidente Adrian Ramón Burgos) is a junior Acting major at MSU. Castellanos recently won the Best Classical Actor award and Regional Alternate at the 2019 region 2 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. His previous credits include Toma/Dog in Mad Forest and Andrew Aguecheeck in Twelfth Night. @thejessecastellanos

Elmer Maximilian Cruz (Daniel Córdova) is a third-year BFA Acting major and a proud Latinx. He also assisted in building the set. As much as he enjoys being on the stage, you can sometimes find Cruz constructing sets, directing shows, and, soon, writing plays. Daughters of the Rebellion is his third production credit at MSU, along with Twelfth Night and Theater on the Move.

Arianna Edmondson (Ester Garcés Córdova) is a freshman in the BFA Acting major from Sicklerville, NJ, appearing in her first college production. Previous favorite roles include the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing.

Danny LeMache (Franco Montés) is a south Florida native who currently resides in Montclair, NJ. He is a third-year student in the BFA Musical Theatre program at MSU appearing in his sixth main-stage production. Previous credits include Juan Peròn in EVITA, Joey Storms in Fly by Night (Southern Colorado Rep), Ritchie Valens in The Night the Music Died, Lt. Buzz Adams in South Pacific (Texas Family Musicals), and Tommy Ross in Carrie (Memorial Auditorium).

Ethan Metz (Juan Bates) is a freshman BFA Acting major from Vernon, NJ. Daughters of the Rebellion is his second show at MSU. He was recently seen as Marmaduke/Chorus in Orlando.

Nayale Quimis (Angela Lapaix) is currently a sophomore Acting major at MSU, Jersey native, and lover of film. Her previous credits include Aunt Elegua in In the Red and Brown Water.

Joseph Respicio (Ramón Burgos) is a senior BFA Acting major and Business minor at MSU. He is excited to be originating the role of Ramón in this gripping new work. His other roles at the university include Iphigenia at Aulis (Soldier), Misalliance (Gunner), Twelfth Night (Antonio), and Mad Forest (Bogdan).

Bradley Allen Satchell (Police Officer/Ensemble) is from Port Saint Lucie, FL. He is a junior BFA Acting major. His previous roles were Nelson Green in Wedding Band by Alice Childress, Ogun Size in In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare. @bradsatch

Raven Smith (Ensemble) is a junior BFA Acting major at MSU. Previous credits include Twelfth Night (2017) and Wedding Band: A Love-Hate Story in Black and White (2018).

Brissae Valdes (Katya Libertad Córdova [Bates]) is currently a senior at MSU’s BFA Acting program. Her recent work includes Oya from In the Red and Brown Water. She is excited to work on a new play that explores and highlights so many cultural issues within her community and hopes that everyone leaves with something from this play.

Templar Grace Wright (Ensemble) is a current BFA Acting major and American Sign Language minor as well as a graduate of the American Musical Theatre Academy of New York and London. You may have recently seen her recently in Wedding Band (Princess). A few of her past credits include Spring Awakening (Wendla), Les Misérables (Eponine), and The Miracle Worker (Helen Keller).
