1930: Pluto is discovered.

• On February 18, 1930 Pluto was discovered.• Clyde W. Tombaugh discovered Pluto.• For decades Pluto was considered the ninth

planet in our solar system.• On March 13, 1930 the discovery of Pluto was

announce publicly• Pluto is now classified as a “dwarf planet.”

1931: Trial of Al Capone.

• Al Capone was the notorious leader of the Colosimo mob.

• In 1931 Capone was indicted for income tax evasion and various violations of the Volstead act.

• His trial opened on October 5, 1931, at the federal courthouse in down town Chicago.

• He was found guilty on some income tax evasion counts (the violations of the Volstead act were dropped).

• Judge Wilkerson gave Capone a prison sentence of eleven years, the longest term ever given for tax evasion.

1932: Amelia Earhart first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic

• On May 20, 1932 Amelia Earhart departed from Newfoundland and landed in northern Ireland.

• The flight took 14 hours and 56 minutes.• Amelia flew in a Lockheed “Vega” high-wing

monoplane.• She made landfall at 11:45am• Amelia Earhart disappeared on July 2, 1937,

when she was 39 years old.

1933: Adolf Hitler becomes chancellor of Germany

• On January 30, 1933 President Hindenburg named Adolf Hitler chancellor of Germany.

• Hitler was the leader of the National Socialist Party.

• Hitler ran in the Presidential election of March 13, 1932.

• After President Hindenburg’s death in 1934, Hitler named himself Der Fuhrer.

1934: Bonnie and Clyde killed by police

• On May 23, 1934 criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were shot and killed by Texas and Louisiana state police.

• For two years they robbed a string of banks and stores across five states; New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Louisiana.

• In all the Barrow gang was responsible for the deaths of 13 people, 9 of which where police officers.

• They where shot to death by officers in an ambush near Sailes, Bienville Parish, Louisiana.

1935: Germany issues Anti-Jewish Nuremburg laws

• In 1933 less than 1% of German population was Jewish.

• More than 400 specifically Anti-Jewish decrees were enacted based on the Nazi definition of “non-Aryan”.

• The purpose of these new laws aimed at excluding Jews from mainstream German life.

• The Nuremburg laws were issued on September 15, 1935.

• These laws established the legal definition for Jew.

1936: Nazi Olympics in Berlin

• In August 1936, Hitler's Nazi dictatorship scored a huge propaganda success as host on the summer Olympic in Berlin.

• Hitler saw the games as a perfect opportunity to demonstrate how efficient Nazi German was.

The Olympic stadium held 100,000 spectators.• Radio broadcasts at the Olympics were in 28

languages.• In 1933 an “Aryans only” policy was instituted

in all German athletic organizations.• Forty-nine athletic teams competed in the

Berlin Olympics.

1937: Hindenburg Disaster • At 7:25pm on May 6, 1937 while the

Hindenburg was trying to land at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey the ship caught on fire

• Within 34 seconds the airship was consumed by fire.

• On May 6, 1937 the Hindenburg carried 61 crew and 36 passengers.

• Many jumped or were rescued from the burning airship after it hit the ground.

• 35 of 97 people on board died.

1938: Hitler Annexed Austria

• On March 12, 1938 German troops marched into Austria to annex the German-speaking nation for the Third Reich.

• Annexed means to append or add as an extra or subordinate part.

• On March 13 the annexation was made into law.

• The annexation made Austria a part if greater Germany.

• Austria remained a part of greater Germany until April 27, 1945 when Austrian government declared the annexation null and void.

1939: World War II begins

• At 4:45am on September 1, 1939 German troops entered Poland, which resulted in six years of war.

• On September 3, The British and French empires (except Ireland) declared war on Germany.

• During the war Germany made treaties with Italy and Japan.
