Scene I

The Act opens up with Sampson and Gregory making fun of the Montagues.

They talk about how they would fight the Montagues.

Benvolio enters and demands them to either put up or shut up.

Tybalt enters and begins to insult the Montagues, they fight.

Scene I cont.

The officer enters and breaks up the fighting.

Old Capulet enters the room, late to the fighting, but still wants to fight Benvolio.

Lady Capulet asks why he needs a sword.

Both Montague and Lady Montague enter, and then the Prince enters.

The Prince talks about how if they keep disturbing the city with their fighting, then their lives will be the price.

Scene I cont.

Montague asks who started this new fight? Benvolio replied that Tybalt appeared sword in hand, and he threatened his family.

Then Lady Capulet asks where Romeo is at, glad that he was not here during this quarrel.

Benvolio says that he saw Romeo earlier this morning, he was in his room, distraught over a girl he was into.

Scene I cont.

Benvolio sees Romeo and they talk. They talk about how Romeo is depressed. They continue to talk about love.

Romeo talks about how his love his depressing him, and has given him grief.

Scene II

Scene 2 starts out with Capulet, Paris, and his servant.

They are talking about how Juliet needs to be wed, preferably to Paris.

Capulet thinks she is too young to be wed to him.

They have a party.

Scene II cont.

Capulet’s servant Peter gets a list and is sent to get guests, and meets Romeo. Romeo sees Rosaline is on the list. And decides to go.

Scene III

Capulet’s wife, Juliet, and her nurse talk about marrying Paris, Juliet doesn’t want to but says she will try. Nurse reminisces about raising Juliet since she was a baby.

Scene IV

Romeo, Benvolio, and Mercutio, are at the party wearing masks, Mercutio talks about dreamers.

Scene V

Romeo sees Juliet, they instantly fall in love. Tybalt recognizes Romeo and Capulet tells him to ignore him, Romeo and Juliet talk, and kiss. Then Juliet is called away, and they realize they are from opposing families.
