BIOGRAPHIES

CHRISTOPHER MORRIS - Playwright/Director Christopher, a director, actor and playwright residing in Toronto, is the Artistic Director of Human Cargo and the co-founder of the Tununiq Arasarniit Theatre Group, a theatre company based in Pond Inlet, Nunavut. Recent directing credits include Dust (Human Cargo/Ajoka Theatre, Pakistan/Kabul/Alberta Theatre Projects), Night (Human Cargo/National Arts Centre/Akureyri Playhouse, Iceland/Nunavut) and its tour across Canada (Thousand Islands Playhouse, lqaluit, Pond Inlet, Factory Theatre and the Magnetic North Festival), Saqiuyuq (Tununiq Arsarniit Theatre Group/Nunavut), Silativut (TATG/Nunavut), Mary’s Wedding (Grand Theatre/London), The Bear (Preface Theatre/Art Gallery of Ontario), I Am Yours (Equity Showcase Theatre), Mad Forest (Visiting Professional Director - University of Toronto), The Crack Walker (Trinity College, Dublin). Assistant

directing credits include Medea (Sardapi Theatre, Republic of Georgia) and Vote (Theatre for Change, Azerbaijan). Christopher was the winner of the 2008 KM Hunter Award for Theatre and is the recipient of the Canada Council for the Arts’ 2012 John Hirsch Prize for directing.

RENELTTA ARLUK - Gloria Reneltta is of lnuvialuit, Gwich’in and Chipewyan-Cree descent originally from Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. She is a graduate of the BFA Acting program from the University of Alberta and founder of Akpik Theatre, a professional Indigenous Theatre company in the NWT. Recent and favourite acting credits include: Feature Film MaIna (Strada Films), Salmon Row (Mortal Coil), reality series Dene a Journey (APTN), Within/Without (Akpik Theatre), self-written one-woman show TUMIT (Akpik Theatre/CANOE Festival/Talking Stick Festival), touring Greece in Utopian Floes (Caravan Stage Tall Ship Theatre) and Copper Thunderbird (National Arts Centre) where she became one of the premier recipients of the David S.R. Leighton Fellowship Award. Reneltta is now working on a new play about Tookoolito female woman guide to explorer Charles Francis Hall. She has toured with Night to Gananoque, lqaluit, Pond Inlet, Toronto, Calgary and is loving being on tour with this cast and crew once again. ReneHa is two-time Night Bally Champion and looks forward to defending her title...bring it.

TIFFANY AYALIK - Piuyuq Tiffany Ayalik was born in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and is of Inuit ancestry. It was in the North, listening to stories from her elders that she discovered her love of storytelling, and the powerful change that hearing a story can bring about. After receiving her Diploma in Acting from Red Deer Collage, she continued her studies at the University of Alberta, and graduated ‘With Distinction’ from the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting. Some of Tiffany’s other credits include Sedna in The Legend of Sedna (Table D’Hote Theatre) Woman in A Taste of the Wildcat (Stuck in a Snowbank Theatre), Bobby in The Big League (Manitoba Theatre for Young People), Kili and

dedicated to nurturing Indigenous artists and arts practices.We embody the spirit of our collective vision through our name which translates from Anishnaabemowin (Ojibway) as “weaving sweetgrass in toward the heart of the braid”. Sweetgrass grows in abundance in this region and has been used for generations as medicine in our First Nation territories. We believe that expression through the arts is also great medicine. Through our many partnerships we are weaving together communities, organizations and audiences to celebrate the strength, resilience and innovation of Indigenous artistic practices.

O’Kaadenigan Wiingashk Collective (known locally as OKW) is a multidisciplinary arts collective

Elrond in The Hobbit (Manitoba Theatre for Young People), singing and storytelling as a cultural representative for the Northwest Territories at the 2010 Olympics (BDK Services), Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet (University of Alberta), Clara in Hay Fever (RDC Arts Centre), Queen Gertrude in Hamlet (RDC Arts Centre), Reporter in Aklavik Journals (Stuck in a Snowbank Theatre). Tiffany would like to thank the Human Cargo team and her family for all of their support.

JONATHAN FISHER - Jayko/CandyMan Jonathan Fisher is Pottawattami, Muckwa Dodem (Bear Clan) from the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve, Three Fires Confederacy on Manitoulin Island, Ontario. He has performed extensively as an actor, dancer and singer in numerous productions across Canada, the U.S. and most recently Europe. Favourite roles include Jayko/Candy Man in Night (Human Cargo/Mag North/Factory Theatre/1000 Islands/Nunavut), Lupi in Lupi, The Great White Wolf (De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group) performed entirely in the Anishnabe language. John Pai in The Indolent Boys (Syracuse Stage), Almighty Voice in Almighty Voice & His Wife (Native Earth Performing Arts), Creature Nataways in Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing (Red Roots Theatre), Mark in Time Stands Still (Native Earth Performing Arts), and in Ian Ross’ Governor General Award winning play fareWel (Prairie Theatre Exchange/Great Canadian Theatre Cornpany/Traverse Theatre), for which he performed at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. Jonathan has performed in Prague, Czech Republic across Canada, the U.S. and at the Aboriginal festival in Woodford, Australia. Other theatres he has performed with include Magnus Theatre, Arts and Cultural Centres Newfoundland & Labradour, Theatre Direct Canada, VideoCabaret, Manitoba Theatre for Young People, Sudbury Theatre Centre, Catalyst Theatre, One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo, Perth Theatre Projects, Red Barn Theatre, Arbour Theatre, Carousel Theatre, Firehall Arts Centre, National Arts Centre and The Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C.

LINNEA SWAN - Daniella Toronto-based performing artist Linnea Swan has had the pleasure of working with many of Canada’s esteemed dance/theatre companies and artists in a career spanning nearly twenty years. She is a collaborator and member of the interdisciplinary Exchange Rate Collective with Adam Lazarus and Claire Calnan, and received The 2013 Dora Award for Ensemble Performance in Dance for Road Trip - the duet she co-created and performed with longtime colleague Susie Burpee. She is featured in the Bravo!FACT videos Slip, Sahara Sahara, and La Revue. A filmmaker herself, she has collaborated with a number of choreographers to create dance films, films to accompany live performance, promotional videos and performance documentation. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, she is a graduate of The School of Contemporary Dancers in Winnipeg and has been a proud Torontonian for 10 years.

ELIZABETH MCDERMOTT - Stage Manager Elizabeth is thrilled to be a part of Night once again. Based out of Toronto, stage management is a career change for Elizabeth after many years with the City of Toronto. Theatre Credits include: Night of the Living Dead Live! GILLIAN GALLOW - Set and Costume Designer Gillian studied design for the theatre at York University and graduated with honours BFA in 2004. She is now designing set and costume across Canada and has been awarded three Dora Mayor Moore awards for her design work. Some of her credits include: The Three

MICHELLE RAMSAY - Lighting Designer Michelle is pleased to re-visit Night after the tour last season. She is based in Toronto and has worked with many companies including: The Shaw Festival, Theatre Rusticle, Seventh Stage, Native Earth Performing Arts, Western Canada Theatre, The National Arts Centre, New Harlem Productions, Mirvish Productions, fu-Gen, Tarragon Theatre, Theatre Passe Muraille and many others. She has received four Dora Mayor Moore Awards. In 2008 she received the Pauline McGibbon Award for a designer.

LYON SMITH - Sound Designer Select credits include Fernando Krapp Wrote Me This Letter for Canstage, Window on Toronto for Soulpepper, Third Eye Looming for Workman Arts, The Toronto Suite performance with the Via Salzburg Chamber Orchestra @ Glenn Gould Studio, Night for Human Cargo, Saving Lonesome George for Carousel Players and Agokwe for Buddies in Bad Times. Lyon has received multiple Dora nominations and one award for his sound work.

ANNA TREUSCH - Props Anna is a Toronto based Set and Costume Designer, Production Designer and Scenic Painter. Most recent design credits include, Every Letter Counts ( Factory Theatre), Rocky Horror, RENT (Fallen Rock), Mary Poppins, Grease (Theatre St. Johns), Jewel, Newfoundland Songbook, Mary’s Wedding and Canada Rocks!

(Stephenville Theatre Festival), Macbeth (Set, Classical Theatre Project), NINE, Penelopiad, Our Town, Little Women (Randolph Academy). Recent Production Design Credits include, So Far (Well-Drawn Dog Prod.) Plastic (Over Black Productions), Dirge ( BravoFact, Troublefish Productions). Anna is a short listed nominee for the 2013 Pauline McGibbon Award. KAITLIN HICKEY - Touring Technical Director Kaitlin Hickey is a recent graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, and holds a B.Sc. from St. Francis Xavier University. Recent work includes: Production Manager Weather the Weather (Theatre Columbus), Production Manager, Old Man and The River (Theatre Direct); Associate Video Designer CRASH (Necessary Angel); Technical Director and Associate Lighting Designer Tulugak: Inuit Raven Stories (Greenlandic Tour), Assistant Director Passion Play - Part One (Sheep No Wool/Convergence Theatre/Outside the March); Assistant Technical Director, Passion Play; Assistant Lighting Co-ordinator for the Canada Dance Festival (NAC); Exhibit Production and Technologies Supervisor for the The Works Art and Design Festival (Edmonton AB); Set Designer Pains of Youth (WorkHouse Theatre). She is interested in production management and lighting, video and set design.
