Regardless of Age

Have you ever said or heard someone say “youth are the future of our church?” There is truth in this statement but at the same time there is something in me that doesn't settle right when I hear those words spoken because students are the present church too (just like all other believers). This future-church message may seem empowering, but it can be somewhat defeating. We should always be challenging our youth to be ministers and to participate in the faith today instead of sitting back and waiting until they are adults.

The apostle Paul encouraged young Timothy's ministry by saying in 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV), "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity." We all need to communicate that same message. Jesus never said, take up your cross and follow me when you're an adult. God shattered age limits with biblical heroes like David, Jeremiah, and Mary. A sign of a healthy church is one that helps all Christians, regardless of age, to discover their gifts and express them through serving in ministry.

At Youth Group, students have the opportunity to turn in prayer requests or comments that are shared later with our Youth Workers.

The following are some we have received recently:

I ask God to show me how to live according to His Plan.

Thank you for the encouragement I get here every week.

I accepted the Lord into my heart.

I’m going to start following God.

Life is a gift and Jesus needs to be in it.

Pray that I will be more Christ like.

I just wanted to thank everyone for helping me grow closer to God.

Healthy ministries always rely on the gifts, talents, passions, and energy of other leaders. Different types of leaders reach different types of students using their own styles, interests, and experiences. The comments above are evidence that Belin's youth program is blessed to have parents, adult volunteers, and a church committed to growing and impacting the lives of youth with the truth and love of Christ. Thank you for all that you do!

At the start of this new year, don't miss out on what God has in store for you. I'll

be praying for you, and I ask that you pray for me and our year round youth ministry. Pray that we help students to connect with each other in friendship and to honor and grow closer to God while loving and reaching out to those in need.

I hope to see you this Sunday morning in the sanctuary for our traditional worship service or in the Family Life Center for our Harbor worship service. I also hope to see you next Sunday, February 8, in the sanctuary for Youth Sunday!

Cool Solutions

Belin Memorial has done some research and is considering employing the services of the Cool Solutions Group, a consulting and planning firm that works with churches to evaluate the vision and mission of the church and then develop specific focus areas and goals around that vision. As a growing church, we are looking to Cool Solutions as a strategic knowledgeable outsider and tasking them with making recommendations for us to move into the future as a healthy, vital congregation. The Cool Solutions Group project has received the approval of Belin’s Finance Team and Board of Trustees and will go before the Church Council at the upcoming meeting on Monday, February 9, 6:00 PM. This meeting is open for anyone who would like to attend; however, only Church Council members will have voting rights.

Flower Donations Please call Kim Nobles in the church office if you wish to arrange a date to donate flowers for the altar or chancel, 843.357.5176. Flowers may be picked up after worship services or donated for our Nurture Committee to deliver to those in our congregation in need of special care.

Youth News and Events

Youth are invited to join us Sunday, February 1, at 6 PM to watch the Super Bowl at the Collins Creek Landing Amenities Center. Please bring $1 for the meal and a 2 liter drink, dessert, or snack to share during the game. You are also encouraged to bring a donation of Pop Tarts to support Belin's Backpack Ministry that helps feed children in need in our community. Families are also welcome to drop in for a little while! All youth need to be picked up by the end of halftime as this event will end then. If you plan to come, please sign up by contacting Austin Bond by January 31.

We need youth and adults to help collect financial donations for the Souper Bowl of Caring following this Sunday's worship services. If you are available to help, please contact Austin Bond (include your preference to help at conclusion of 8:45 AM or 11 AM service and at the Harbor or traditional service). Please also consider making a contribution. Your generous donation will help support Belin’s Backpack Ministry and the Murrells Inlet Church of God Food Pantry in feeding the hungry in our community! For more info regarding the Souper Bowl of Caring, please visit www.souperbowl.org.

Youth Sunday Services - Belin's youth will lead the 8:45 AM and 11 AM worship services in the sanctuary on Sunday, February 8. We hope you can join us. It's going to be awesome! All 6th-12th grade youth (whether participating in the service or not) are asked to meet in the Choir Room at 8:25 AM and 10:40 AM prior to the services, so that we can process in and sit together during the services. Please wear your 2014-15 navy Belin UMYF T-Shirt (you can wear a long sleeve shirt underneath if needed) with either long khaki pants or long blue jeans.

Youth Sunday Adult Help Needed - We need adults willing to provide light snacks in the FLC kitchen at 9:45 AM on February 8. We have a lot of youth who skip breakfast to get to church on time for the early service, so this will mean a lot to them! Please just bring snacks to the FLC kitchen by 9:45 AM.

Guatemala Mission Trip 2015 Our team is set for this year's Guatemala trip. The response has been fantastic: 30 people are going. As a result, Mike, Robin, and I agreed to commit to building 2 houses this summer. Funding will be a challenge, since we will have to raise an additional $8,000 to purchase the materials for the second house, but we do

have International Missions money left from last year and that will be a start.

Here's some information about this year's mission. 13 team members have been on house building mission trips with Belin in the past, and 17 will be making their first trip. 27 in our team are members at Belin or worship here, and 3 are friends or family of Belin members. We will again conduct a Bible school at one of the house sites for neighborhood children. And, for the first time, we plan to have a food ministry as well. With the help of one of the local pastors, we will distribute bags of non-perishable food to families who need it. They may be members of that pastor's church or just people in the community who are in need. If we have enough money to buy more food than we can distribute in our limited amount of time, we want to establish a food pantry in one of the churches.

We are all excited about this year’s trip. Fundraisers are planned for this spring, including another Yard Sale, a Good Friday Fish Fry, and the Third Annual Daddy Daughter Dance, which is coming up on Friday, March 6. The congregation's support of our fundraisers is greatly appreciated. If you would like to know other ways you can become more involved in Belin's international mission trip, please call Dave Hobson, 843.650.0636.

Profiles of Service - by Carrie Humphreys (first in a series of interviews with the staff at Belin Memorial)

There are twenty-one full or part-time staff members at Belin Memorial dedicated to enhancing our church experience as well as twenty-seven employees at our Belin Creative Learning Center. Belin employees are all unique in their service and their function. This column will profile many of them in the weeks ahead. It's time to get acquainted!

Ever wonder who keeps our church tidy and sparkling? Listening to the chores performed by Charlie Puckett is exhausting. As head of maintenance, what doesn't he do? Puckett, 63, who hails from Gastonia , NC, took on the job just five years ago. Before settling in Murrells Inlet, his former careers included twenty-seven years with the Air National Guard and twenty-six years with the UniRoyal Chemical plant in Gastonia. Married to Teresa for forty-two years, he has two sons and boasts two granddaughters.

He's the gent who oversees the setup for all Belin events, from weddings to funerals, basketball to Zumba classes, Scout meetings to classroom activities, all church dinners, and the equipment needed for the Harbor Sunday services. The "behind the scenes" fellow and his staff are on call at a moment’s notice, experienced in everything from general maintenance to electrical, lighting, and sound. Charlie oversees maintenance and repairs in the sanctuary, Family Life Center, BCLC, church office, and parking lots.

"The best part of my job," said Puckett "are the people. I enjoy meeting people. I've never met a stranger."

The custodial jobs include all the needs in the sanctuary, Family Life Center, and church office, even minor things like changing light bulbs, door handles and filters. Assisting Puckett with custodial chores are husband and wife team David Garcia and Molly Smith. They, along with Jerry "Ronnie" Morgan and Bradd Myers are among the custodial team that keeps the sanctuary spiffy, the kitchen shiny and polished, floors spotless, and the bathrooms tidy.

According to Puckett, "There is always something going on at Belin Memorial keeping us on our toes!"

Ash Wednesday Services and Lent

Join us for Ash Wednesday services and Lenten worship services each Wednesday at noon in the sanctuary during Lent. We hope you take this journey through Lent with us!

Ash Wednesday Lenten worship services: 12:00 noon and 7 PM February 18 (with Holy Communion and Imposition of Ashes)

Wednesday Lenten worship services at 12:00 noon: February 25, March 4, 11, 18, 25, April 1

Following the noon worship service, Belin’s Rollie Hanna Breakfast Team and the UMW Circles will prepare and serve lunch in the Family Life Center. The cost is $4.00. The menu for Ash Wednesday lunch includes: Barbeque Pork Sandwich with Red Slaw, Corn Chowder, Fresh Fruit Cup, and Vanishing Oatmeal Cookies. Please join us for worship and for lunch.
