Physical features of Africa

Africa straddles the equator, having an almost equal south and north extent

This divides Africa into almost two equal parts lengthwise.

The equator makes the climatic and physical conditions in the north repeat themselves in the south.

Africa is the most tropical of all continents.

Rivers

Africa rivers has a Y-shaped integrated Rift Valley system.

The Rift Valley begins from the Red Sea and extends through the Ethiopian highlands to the Lake Victorian region.

Its total length is estimated to be 6,000 miles average width ranges between 20 miles and 50 miles.

Topograph

Africa's topography is incredibly varied. Its mountain ranges, savannahs, plateaus, lakes, rivers and deserts sustain an incredibly diverse array of life.

Its Olduvai Gorge region is known as the "cradle of humanity," the site of the earliest known human habitation.

The arid Sahara is Earth's largest desert.

The Great Rift Valley is one of the world's longest earthquake faults.

Topography cont…

Lake Victoria is the second largest freshwater lake in the world behind the U.S. Lake Superior.

The Congo Basin is home to the second largest concentration of rainforests on Earth behind South America's Amazon.

And, of course, there are the great savannas, such as the Serengeti, which teem with some of Earth's most exotic wildlife, including plenty of those elephants

Lakes and oceans

Water shortages are a chronic and severe problem in much of South Africa.

The country has no commercially navigable rivers and no significant natural lakes.

The government has created several artificial lakes, primarily for agricultural irrigation.

South Africa's largest river is the orange river.
