LEWIS AND CLARK’S EXPEDITION

The Louisiana Purchase

The Louisiana Purchase was one of the largest real estate deals in history. The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France at the price of $15 million, or approximately four cents an acre. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States and opened up North America to westward expansion.

Lewis and Clark

Lewis was the leader of the expedition and was born on August 18, 1774 and died on October 11, 1809

Lewis’s friend Clark was born on August 1, 1770 and died September 1, 1838.

The expedition took 2 years 1804 - 1806.

Lewis and Clark’s Goals

*Make friends with Native Americans. *Map the rivers. *Open the west to trade. * Find new animals and plants.

Supplies

12 dozen pocket mirrors. 130 rolls of tobacco. And 288 knives. 500 rifle flints 176 pounds of gunpowder 35 Oars 2 Horses

Route of Expedition

President Thomas Jefferson had long wanted to see what the lands of western North America were like. His scientific curiosity mixed with political interests. With the approval of Congress, he made plans even before the Lousiana Purchase was completed. He asked Meriwether Lewis, his secretary, to head the expedition and to selected his own co-captain. Lewis chose William Clark, who once had been his commanding officer in the army.

Sacagawea

Sacagawea was one for the most important person on the expedition because she saved many goods and she guided the way through mountains and forests. With Sacagawea Lewis’s crew would be lost forever.

Seaman

Seaman is a Newfoundland dog he was purchased in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania for $20 by Lewis. In 1805 Lewis and Clark did surgery on Seaman’s leg because he got bit by a beaver. Seaman brought back the dead animals for the men to eat.

Crew Members

A few of the sergeants and an Privates were Charles Floyd, John Ordway, William Bratton, and John Collins.

Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743. Thomas Jefferson sent the Crops Of Discovery on May 14 1804 to explore the west of the United State.

Conclusion

After 2 years Lewis’s crew came back and only one person died on the expedition.
