Page 3: Buying recycled

Be a super-consumer and buy eco-friendly gifts and products! Many people don’t realize how important and easy it is to buy recycled. The recycling process doesn’t end when your recycling is collected. Those recycled materials are made into new products that must be purchased to “close the recycling loop” and ensure these materials re-enter the economy.

Buying recycled also keeps waste out of landfills, extends the life of natural resources, and allows you to send a message to companies about the demand for environmentally friendly practices. So shop recycled and make a meaningful difference in the environment, economy, and local community!

How can I make it work for me?There are many myths about recycled products. You may think that recycled content products are too expensive or of a poor quality. In fact, many recycled products are competitively priced and of equal or greater quality compared to products made from virgin materials.

It may take some effort in the beginning, but as you become familiar with vendors, manufacturers, and local stores that sell recycled content products, it will become easier to buy recycled. This guide can help!

Shopping is something fun to do with friends and family. What a perfect way to reach out and encourage others to buy recycled as well. Going green is contagious – so pass it on! Review these tips before you go out and shop:

• Know the manufacturer or product name in case you need help finding a particular item at the store.• Keep an eye out for labeling which identifies recycled content.• Try to find products that use at least 30% post-consumer materials.• Steer clear of products made entirely from virgin materials.• Can’t find it in the store? Check online for products using the keyword: recycle.• As always, don’t buy it if you don’t need it!
