The Butte Education Foundation

The Butte Education Foundation is in its fourth year of enhancing the experiences of public edu-

cation students and teachers in Butte and Silver Bow County. BEF sponsors a wide variety of

events annually: The Teacher’s Grant Program, City Wide Hall of Fame for Elementary Students,

Donna and Chet Bowler Memorial Scholarship Program, Hats Off for Education Fundraising Din-

ner, and now the Celebration of Excellence Dinner. The key to BEF’s success is the message that

excellent public schools forge healthy communities and that creating this vehicle allows the en-

tire community to invest time, assets, and enthusiasm into the cause. Our guiding vision is that

EVERY CHILD has the right to an excellent education and that an investment in the Butte Public

Schools is an investment in the Butte community.

Our Mission

The mission of the Butte Education Foundation is to facilitate the funding of innovative educa-

tional programs and to advance community support for excellence through endowments, schol-

arships, grants, and specialized programs. The foundation will provide fi nancial resources for

students and educators in the district and county schools.

The Butte Education Foundation:

Is a 501(c)(3) non-profi t, tax-exempt organization of local citizens, independent of the Butte

Public School District but complementing and collaborating with it; works to increase private

support for public education beyond that which is constitutionally mandated; and Benefi ts Butte

Public School students and staff by serving as a catalyst and fund source for new ideas, pro-

grams, and education methods.


A Celebration of ExcellenceA Celebration of Excellence provides public recognition of extraordinary public school students and outstanding educators. By honoring achievements of these individuals, The Foundation:

• Demonstrates community appreciation for the efforts of public school students, educators, and parents;• Acknowledges the critical partnership among schools, home, business and the community;• Provides a positive reinforcement for younger students and a goal for which they can strive;• Recognizes the success within our public schools.

Distinguished StudentsA Celebration of Excellence recognizes exceptional students who have demonstrated

their efforts in the classroom, school, and community day after day, year after year.

Distinguished Scholars were selected on the basis of grade point average; number

of honors, advanced placement and other higher level courses; total credit hours;

school activities; and community service. Distinguished Achievers were nominated

based on excellence in a specifi c curricular area, leadership, overcoming personal and

academic obstacles, or exemplary service.

EducatorsA Celebration of Excellence honors the Distinguished Educators. Each student

selected an educator to recognize who had a signifi cant, positive impact on his or

her life and wrote a short message about why that educator was selected. The Butte

Education Foundation salutes these fi ne educators and thanks them for sharing their

talents, knowledge, creativity, and love of learning with our youth. They make a

difference in our schools and community, one student and one class at a time.

“Looking back through my school years, many of my memories seem to blend together from year to year, but there was one year that stood out among the rest. That was third grade with Ms. Patty O’Neill. I immediately knew it would be a good year as I counted the number of friends in my class, and Ms. O’Neill’s bubbly personality confi rmed that even more. Ms. O’Neill made learning fun. I may not have known it then, but her class had a great impact on my dedication to school. While other classes were sitting in the classroom, we were outside working on projects. We concentrated massive amounts of time towards our times tables which she also managed to make fun, a great feat to accomplish for a class of eight and nine year olds. Even though everyone enjoyed her class, she was also strict about our work and making sure we stayed on track. She rarely had to push people to get their work done, though, as everyone was so eager to impress her. Despite all of the fun, third grade happened to be one of the most tragic years in US history. September 11 was a school day, and everyone was confused as we fi led into class. Ms. O’Neill not only helped us under-stand what was happening but reminded us each morning as we started the day with the Pledge of Allegiance and the song “Proud to be an American,” which we all knew by heart. I was happy to pick such a great teacher and woman to be recognized, as Ms. O’Neill made me enjoy going to school each and every morning.”

“Frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, nasal; these are just a few bones of the human skull. My seventh grade earth science teacher, Mr. Ricketts, taught me the bones of the body and it is something that I will never forget. Mr. Ricketts was a teacher who knew how to make learning fun; he en-gaged his students which in turn helped spark our interest. I have always had a fascination with the human body and the way it works. Mr. Ricketts helped to fuel my passion for understanding it. Sure we studied earth science and we did not spend much time learning about the human body, but he showed me how to take my interests and pursue them as passions no matter what they may be. As I head off to college next year, I will take my pas-sion for the human body and major in Kinesiology. I have had many teachers throughout my life and it is Mr. Ricketts who stands out in my mind as the one who helped me get where I am today, as well as where I am going. ”

“One of the best things about Ms. Fogarty is that whenever you walk into her classroom she greets you with a giant smile and an enthusiastic “Hello!” She is always excited, and her energy defi nitely comes out in her teaching. There is never a boring day in Ms. Fogarty’s class! Ms. Fogarty is also one of the most caring teachers. She is understanding, and she is always willing to help a student in need. Chemistry does not always come easy to some, and Ms. Fogarty is always helpful in taking the time to go through the steps and help those who are struggling to comprehend. Also, Ms. Fogarty makes chemistry fun. If chemistry was complicated and tiresome before, Ms. Fogarty turns it into a fascinating subject to learn about. She makes even the hardest and complex chemistry light and funny, and she shows her students just how easy, and even enjoyable, chemistry can be. That is the sign of a truly wonderful teacher; someone who can take a subject and make it worthwhile and appealing to learn about, while keeping it fresh and exciting. Ms. Fogarty teaches in a unique and relatable way so that anyone can learn. Having Ms. Fogarty for a teacher is a truly wonderful experience, and she has impacted my education and will continue to impact others’ educations in the future.”

“During my high school years, English has always been one of my least favorite and quite honestly dreaded classes. However, after a year in Mr. Dave Johnson’s class, my attitude towards the subject has changed. Mr. Johnson has always encouraged the expression of opinions in class. And after some initial guidance, he challenged us to draw our own conclusions on the signifi cance and meaning behind a piece of work. Even though some of the novels we have had to read were excruciating to get through at the time, by reading them I have gained the ability to critique with an educated opinion. Each novel assigned has shown a different aspect of literature and has exposed different writing styles from different times in history. The common 40-minute timed writing practice along with Mr. Johnson’s instruction on writing tech-niques has led to the development of collegiate level writing skills which I will continue to use and enhance in college coursework. In addition to the educational aspect of Mr. Johnson’s class, there was always a relaxed atmosphere. His preference of using lamps instead of the usual glaring overhead lights created a comfortable learning environment. Besides the lighting, his positive comic relief always encouraged a more relaxed mood, which led to the open expressions of ideas. Mr. Johnson has made a signifi cant impact on my fi nal year of education here at Butte High School. Many of the techniques he has taught me will stay with me and infl uence my future endeav-ors. For that, I am grateful. ”

“I have decided to invite Kris Mengon to the 2011 Dinner of Excellence. I came into Butte High as a freshman, and I was a little nervous about the big change. I remember walking into my geometry math class, and I was one of the only freshmen in there which didn’t help. I was never really a big ge-ometry fan, I had a rough time understanding it. Ms. Mengon gained my respect from the fi rst day. She seemed really nice, and I knew she was willing to help anyone if they needed it. Throughout the year I gained a lot more skills in the geometric area, and I learned skills that benefi ted me throughout high school. I also learned to keep a good work ethic and how to stay on task. The thing I really liked about Ms. Mengon’s class was it wasn’t all book work. We did a lot of fun projects throughout the year such as the robotics challenge, and other things that kept my interest. The fi rst semester of ge-ometry I ended up pulling out an A, and I honestly could not have done it without Mrs. Mengon. I have had a lot of good teachers throughout my life, but Mrs. Mengon is defi nitely one of my favorites. I am honored to select her for this dinner because she deserves it. ”

“As I refl ect on all the instructors who have taught me during my thirteen years in the Butte Public School system and think of the impact each has had on me, the per-son that stands out to me as having the greatest impact is Ms. Driscoll. During my two years as her Chemistry and Chemistry AP student, I have experienced her ability to ideally balance keeping me focused while enjoying the material being taught. One of the outstanding qualities of Ms. Driscoll is her ability to teach me a concept in the classroom, allow me to see that concept in action through a lab experiment, and provide real world examples showing me the practical application of the concept. I have not been taught by any other teacher who can demonstrate how the seemingly abstract concepts taught in the classroom are truly integral parts of my everyday life. While Ms. Driscoll is always there to help, her style is to guide me in the right direction, ensuring that while I utilize all the information she presents, all work done is my own. This approach guarantees me a high sense of accomplishment, knowing that I used the tools offered by an outstanding teacher to create my own success. Overall, no teacher has infl uenced me more than Ms. Driscoll, and because I have wholly enjoyed her classes I plan to pursue a career in a science related fi eld.”

“Ms. Johnson, my sixth grade teacher, is the teacher who most infl uenced my education for a number of reasons. I can honestly say I enjoyed waking up each and every morning that year to go to school. Ms. Johnson’s energy and enthusiasm brought excitement to the classroom, and she made what otherwise would have been an ordinary day into something to look forward to with great anticipation. Ms. Johnson had a way of making learning inter-esting. For example, I found history to be a diffi cult subject on which to focus. Yet, Ms. Johnson successfully engaged me in learning history by using hands-on activities that made it fun. As a result, I learned much more about history than I would have learned had she simply taught out of a book. Part of being a sixth grade teacher is preparing students for the transition from elementary school to middle school. This is challenging for many stu-dents, but with help and encouragement from Ms. Johnson, I was able to make a smooth transition. Ms. Johnson had a kind and caring way of teaching us a little more about ourselves each day at school. She taught me that it is okay to step out of my comfort zone every once and awhile and that being your own person is the best possible way to be. In short, Ms. Johnson taught me how to be better. I learned a lot about myself that year, and for that I am grateful. Thank you Ms. Johnson, for giving me the confi dence to pursue the opportunities available to me.”

“Mr. Kujawa has had a large impact on my life. He has been a mentor and taught me my new hobby, pottery. He is always excited to answer my many questions and help me learn new things. With his guidance, I am now the best potter at Butte High, other than him. Mr. Kujawa hosts many activities for Butte High School students to enrich their lives. These include but are not limited to Art Club, Art Trek, and Art Inter-scholastics. For those who don’t know, Art Club is an activity on Thursday each week at the high school where the students gather to do art. Art Trek is a trip that Mr. Kujawa takes students on to broaden their horizons about art. This year students are going to Portland. Art Inter-scholastics is a an art program that was hosted this year by our own Butte High School that brings together the creative minds of Montana’s youth to share a weekend of art making. Mr. Kujawa is a fantastic art teacher who can inspire even the most dreary art class to be creative and productive. In closing Mr. Kujawa is the best teacher at Butte High, period.”

“One day last fall Mrs. Shutey stopped me in the hall on my way to my Anatomy class and asked me about my thoughts for college. I told her that I planned on attending MSU and major in Chemical Engineering. She advised me to look into Metallurgical Engineering at Montana Tech for the fi rst two years because the classes where the same and I could still live at home. I mentioned it to my dad and we set up an appointment with the department head of Metallurgy. After learning more about the department I decided to attend Tech and major in Metallurgy. If Mrs. Shutey had not taken the time and interest to talk to me about my college plans, then I might not have even known about the awesome opportunity that awaits me now. Thank you Mrs. Shutey. ”

“In fi fth grade, I joined a dance team called B’z On the Edge, a feeder program for the Purple B’z. I was informed of this program through Becky Cianca; she was an acquain-tance of my family and the coach of B’z On the Edge. I took dance lessons from her until it came time to try out for the Purple B’z. By this time, she had prepared me well to qualify for the high school drill team. Becky was my coach my freshman year, and she was wonderfully fi t for the profession. She was well organized, and she encouraged us to work hard on our routines. Her motivation created a positive atmosphere; there was never a day at practice that I was reluctant to give one-hundred percent of my effort into dance. Ms. Cianca is not only a coach for multiple dance teams, but a physical education and health teacher at Butte High School as well. Becky Cianca has since retired from the coaching position of the Purple B’z, but has remained the coach of B’z On the Edge. My freshman year experience encouraged me to remain on the Purple B’z, and I became the captain my senior year. I have taught with her children of B’z On the Edge, and I am on a tumbling team she coaches. Ms. Cianca has enabled me to be a well-rounded student by being involved in so many activities. She has given me work, leadership, and dance experience. Becky Cianca sees potential in every one of her students. She does everything in her power to aid them in reaching their goal, and I thank her for such an incredible display of positive support.”

“When looking back on my education, I realize just how valuable it is. From the fi rst steps into my kindergarten classroom to what is soon to be my last steps in Butte High School--education has shaped me into the person I am today. Knowledge is key; our fast-paced, highly-advanced society has made that evident. I’ve discovered that having compassionate teachers that care about what they do has made all the difference throughout my years of learning. Considering that is why I’d like to thank Mr. Magnuson for his immeasurable kindness, dedication, and inspiration. When I was an eighth grader at East Middle School, I was honored with having Mr. Magnuson as an Earth Science teacher. The world has always fascinated me. In eighth grade Earth Science my eyes were opened. For the fi rst time I was taught that science was more than just written chapters in a three-hundred page text book. The world of exploration and discovery became real; the things around me started making more sense. Science became real. Mr. Magnuson took the time to explain details, motivate us, and most importantly, get to know each of us personally. He was more than a teacher. He was a mentor. I am so grateful for the impact he has had on my life--it will never be forgotten. Thanks so much for everything that you have done Mr. Mag. ”

“William Arthur Ward once explained teachers saying, “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” I have been lucky to have many great teachers throughout my education. These educators have inspired me to learn, think, and be more. One of these great teachers I would especially like to thank is Frau Schoonen I fi rst met Frau Schoonen, or Frau as students refer to her, in eighth grade German class. I was in this class not because I necessarily cared for the German language, but because this was the language East’s team A was assigned. Before this verrückt (crazy) woman named Frau came along, I did not see much value in the German Language. After one semester with Frau, I was hooked and decided I needed to continue to speak German. Frau was then my teacher sophomore and junior year, and I was lucky enough to travel with her and other students to the beautiful land I had a new found interest in. Frau Schoonen has impacted my education not only by creating in me an interest in other cultures and studying abroad, but by never failing to assist me. Frau has writ-ten me numerous recommendations and constantly wishes to know what progress I am making in other areas of my life. I was inspired by Frau Schoonen to learn and even like another language, but more than that, I was inspired to fi nd a part of myself in that language. Thank you, Frau!”

“From reciting the alphabet to learning the secrets of Calculus, I have had many different people in and out of my life. I would love to be able to thank them all, but there is one certain teacher I owe the world to. He was the teacher that everyone wanted their sixth grade year; they would talk about how fun and exhilarating his class was. Sadly, I never got him as a teacher in Elementary school, however I did get the privilege of attending his Rockies reading program. While attending this program, not only did he help me strengthen my reading skills, but also helped me break out of my shy stage and build many friends. When I was little I was a very self-conscious individual and it made it extremely diffi cult to make friends. Therefore when Greeley Elementary closed down, due to the decrease in Butte’s population, I was devas-tated. This meant I was going to have to start all over again. When I found out all my friends were going to different schools I felt alone and afraid, Greeley was the only thing I knew. Then I found out that he, who helped me in the beginning, was going to be moving to the same school I was. Therefore I knew everything was going to be okay. Although I still didn’t acquire him as my sixth grade teacher, I was able to have the benefi t of being in his math class. Between the innumerous rounds of Around the World (Math Style), lobster dinners and making various new friends and memories, I managed to get through it. Thank you so much Mr. Patrick Kissell, for opening my horizon in so many ways.”

“When I began high school as a freshman I was as nervous as any other kid stepping into that big four-story building. Luckily, through my older siblings and my parents I had already been acquainted with a few teachers, one of them being my 4th period geometry teacher, Mrs. Dawn Rowling. She did not treat me like a stranger or even a student; she treated me like a son. She gave me advice and consolation when I needed it and pushed me to be the best I could be. When my cousin Mariah died, she gave me the support I needed to continue to succeed in school but still never expected anything less of me than my best. She taught me more than math; she helped me to realize that I had the courage to overcome any obstacle in my life. She showed me that no matter what the circumstances, I need to always give everything my best shot and never give up on myself. With Mrs. Rowling’s guidance throughout the three of the years that I was lucky enough to have her as a teacher, I discovered who I am and learned to always believe in me. From my fi rst year in geometry to my last in calculus, the impact Mrs. Rowling had on me as her student will always be a factor in helping me to succeed as I pursue my college education, and throughout my life as well. ”

“Marsha Johnson was my fi fth grade teacher at West Elementary. Ms. Johnson had been solidifi ed in my mind for years before I had her as a teacher because I had an older brother who thought the world of her and never stopped talking about her. So obviously, I was pretty thrilled when I had lastly reached the great age of ten, entering the fi fth grade and fi nally able to have Ms. Johnson as a teacher. With a little bit of luck and possibly a tiny bit of parental infl uence, I secured Ms. Johnson as my teacher. I discovered for myself that everything my brother had said was completely accurate. Ms. Johnson and disappointment could not be in the same sentence or even on the same page. I learned so much that year from long division to the discovery of the American Colonies to making life size airplane models. Ms. Johnson always brought the best out of me by making me do my best whether it was reading from my history book or getting a hundred on my spelling test because I wanted to make her proud of me. Ms. Johnson was not only my teacher but my Future Problem Solving coach who led my team to fi rst place in the state competition and took us to Nationals in Kentucky. I have known Andrew Scruggs for six years and fi rst met him when I joined the Young Musicians Club. We started out with him teaching me how to play the drums, then I went on to play the guitar and saxophone. Once I entered high school I joined Andrew Scrugg’s music fundamentals class. Here he taught me a lot about music history and theory. Mr. Scruggs also taught me to respect everyone and that I can always do something, even if it is small. Today I look to him for help and advice when I need it. I know that he will always give me the hope to succeed and the patience to do so. “The teacher who has impacted me the most has also been my football coach for the past two years. Coach Arie Grey has inspired me to give 110% in everything I do. One of the biggest life lessons he has taught me is to overcome adversity no matter the obstacle and how large the stage. Over the past two years, Coach Grey has pushed me to reach my full potential. Even though I did not have him as a teacher, I have learned more on the football fi eld and in the weight room from him than I could in the classroom. Coach Grey has taught me very valuable life lessons and values. The things he has taught me over the past two years, I will continue to use for the rest of my life. After my sophomore year, I was going to give up football. Coach Grey called me into his offi ce to meet with me and he promised me that if I continued playing football for Butte High School, I would not regret my decision. He was right. Next year I plan on attending the University of Montana and I will be playing football for the Grizzlies. Coach Grey’s actions and words had a large infl uence on my decision.”

“Throughout my education in Butte, I’ve had some truly phenomenal teachers, but I would like to recognize one that stands out in my mind. Ms. Foley was my 7th grade science teacher. Her teaching methods made science click. Before her class, science was just another subject I had to learn. Now, science is one of the only classes I look forward to year after year. Ms. Foley had us do projects that made the subject matter stick in our brains. For instance, she had us bake a cake and decorate it to look like a human cell. It quickly helped us learn what things like “rough endoplasmic reticulum” were. Ms. Foley also had us create different ecosystems in shoeboxes. She taught us in such a way that I don’t actually remember learning anything, but all of a sudden, the information was just in my brain. Ms. Foley’s teaching methods weren’t the only reason I looked forward to her class; her personality was also a big factor. Ms. Foley was incredibly funny in a terrifying way. By saying that it was terri-fying, I mean she always made me laugh, but in ways where I wasn’t always sure if it was okay that I was laughing. I think that questioning was partially due to the fact that I was always getting in trouble for talking in her class. “Cicily, you talk more than two old ladies gossiping on a park bench!” was the phrase I heard most commonly. I hope to pursue a career in science someday and I’d like to thank Ms. Foley for showing me how much fun the subject can be.”

“Out of the many great teachers throughout my educational experience, I feel that Mr. Wolstein has impacted my education immensely as my sophomore Biology teach-er. Before taking his class, I thought the subject of science to be interesting, but very intricate and diffi cult to understand. However, I enjoyed his class and gained great interest in Biology. The material came easy to me as my knowledge of the science increased throughout the year. As a sophomore, I never would have thought to take my career path into the scientifi c fi eld, but Mr. Wolstein helped me direct my path for the future. I now plan to attend the University of Montana to study physical therapy. I became interested in the idea of pursuing Biology as a possible course of study after sophomore year, but I was not sure of the exact direction to take. Then I was engaged with the thought of becoming a physical therapist after having suffered an ACL tear in my knee from playing basketball. Mr. Wolstein’s sense for teaching and a personal experience has played an important role upon the new part of my life I’m about to face. I want to thank Mr. Wolstein for his hard work and dedication he has put forth for many years to enhance the minds of Butte, including mine. His passion, his ability to relate with students, and countless years of teaching are commendable, and what has made him such an infl uential teacher.”

“When I was told about this essay I had a fl ash of many teachers come across my mind. Out of all those teachers, one stood out the most. The teacher that was distinctly the most infl uential was Ms. Maloney. Perhaps some people enter one’s life for a particular reason. Ms. Maloney was one of those people in my life. I met her as a substitute English teacher two weeks after my eight grade year began. Fortunately, she ended up being our teacher for the whole year. Ms. Maloney knew how to connect with each and every one of her students. She demonstrated a genuine love for teaching. This love came out through the way she taught and how her students were able to reach levels they didn’t know they could reach. She had creative ways of teaching her class, making lessons easier to remember and understand. She was patient, funny, and most of all kind. Ms. Maloney helped me through one of the hardest times in my life. That year my step-dad was put into prison for molesting me. It was a very messy situation and the last thing I needed was a hard day at school. However, school ended up being the best thing for me. I had Ms. Maloney fi rst thing in the morning and I would jump right out of bed just to see her heart warming smile. Although she didn’t know my situation, she was a huge part of my healing. I’m so glad I have this chance to tell and thank her for how much she meant to me. ”

“Education is meant to serve more than just yourself and is the foundation of all human achievements. Ms. Cetraro, my 7th grade teacher, surely understood the impor-tance of education. She was not only my 7th grade teacher at Ramsay Elementary, but also, a mentor and role model. As our teacher, Ms.C expected great accomplish-ments from us, and would not accept anything less. Ms. Cetraro taught us English and Math, but, we learned important principles and life lessons. As my teacher, she was constantly challenging my perspectives and taking me out of my comfort zone. Although at the time I was less than willing, I now realize her persistence has paid off. By not allowing us to give up, she taught us self-discipline, self confi dence, and fueled our enthusiasm to learn more. From her, I have gained awareness of myself, the advantages education can offer, and the many opportunities available through hard work. Ms. Cetraro’s impact on my education did not stop inside the classroom. Her teaching techniques were often outside of the box, outside of the classroom, and outside of the norm, making our experiences in her classroom always memorable. Her enthusiasm for running, introduced me to a passion that has served me well running on the track and cross country team throughout high school. “To paraphrase the old saying, you can teach a man to fi sh, but unless you can get him to like it, he won’t stick with it. Handing out knowledge is one thing, making it interesting is another matter. Students can easily memorize and then forget facts, but if they are shown that what they learn has signifi cance, they will pursue knowl-edge on their own. I have experienced the opposite approach to teaching, where facts are presented as dry data to be retained, without explanation of their signifi cance. I would conjecture that the lack of interest in the notes given might have stemmed from a lack of interest in the teacher. However, Mr. Burgman, in the A.P. Government class, has repeatedly demonstrated his passion for the details of what he teaches. Quite often, one question will spark a discussion that might involve anything from “separate but equal” railcars to who wore the pants in the Washington’s marriage, and the effect that had on our Constitution. It might seem to meander, but Mr. Burg-man has the gift of taking government from being the study of the dry thoughts of dead men to an exploration of culturally relevant living documents written by people with the same desires, wants, and issues as us. The study of Government is vitally important, and Mr. Burgman has done excellent work in encouraging civic involvement and awareness, a deeper understanding of our political system, and making the principles of our government memorable.”

“As we move through life so many people impact our lives but teachers make the imprint we need for a bright future. One teacher that has impacted my life substan-tially would be Mr. Chris Fisk. He was my sophomore Montana History teacher but more importantly the advisor of the Montana History Club. That was where I found my niche. The Montana History Club was somewhere I belonged. With his help I broke out of my shell and became more involved in my school and community. Over the past three years Mr. Fisk has become much more than a teacher or an advisor but one of my most trusted friends. I chose Mr. Fisk because his effect on my life and the lives of other goes way beyond the class room. He really cares about us and makes sure we live up to our potential. When it comes down to it he is there for me, willing to help with anything he can. He has helped me through some of the toughest times in my life and I thank him for that. He brightens my day with words of encouragement. The activities Mr. Fisk involves the Montana History club in have made me grow as a person, whether it is volunteering or branding cattle. His approach to education enables students to see all walks of life. He welcomes all students to become part of the club and his room becomes our second home. “I’ve had many teachers in my life, the majority of them being great at what they do. However, there are a select few that stick out in my mind as being phenomenal educators. Scott Cooney is defi nitely at the top of that list. Mr. Cooney was my English teacher my junior year of high school. His unique teaching strategies and his dynamic methods he had to better myself are bound to stick with me for a life time. I can recall specifi c lessons taught by him, such as his lesson on transcendentalism where he allowed students to stand up on the desks in rebellion and allowed one student to rip up a book that the majority of us disliked. Many of his lessons were hands on, keeping myself and my fellow students interested and willing to participate. Another memorable lesson was when he had around 100 students reenact a Civil War battle to help our understanding of the book The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. Scott Cooney’s class is more than just memorizing and learning, it is experiencing and discussing. And doing more than teaching Mr. Cooney is my advisor for Key Club, in which I am an offi cer. He convinced me to join my junior year and I absolutely love it. I owe Mr. Cooney a million thanks and more for everything he has taught me and inspired me to accomplish. ”

“As much as I want to be a scientist, fi rst and foremost I have always wanted to be a writer. Mr. Doug Ruffi er has been a large part of the reason that I have chosen to strive for this dream. Until my tenth grade year, I’ll admit that I despised my English classes. I didn’t think that the rules of English were necessary for me to follow in my writing; I had been penning pieces for years and didn’t know what a direct object was, so I assumed that it was a useless bit of knowledge. Rather than snuff creativity, though, Mr. Ruffi er let ours grow while still sticking to grammar. He would always tell us that to break the rules, we fi rst needed to learn them. His end-of-term project, an anthology, encompassed this idea. It allowed us to break out of the box while still challenging us and letting us use everything we had learned that school year. Mr. Ruffi er also sparked another interest in me: Foreign Languages. The basis he gave us went beyond simple grammar to an actual understanding of the linguistics of Eng-lish and an introduction to Latin root words. This made my transition into Latin classes easy and fun, and has given me the thirst for languages that I hope to expand on in college. So, in the end, thanks Rufe. You have truly changed my life. ”

2011 Donna & Chet BowlerMemorial Scholarship RecipientThe Butte Education Foundation has awarded the 2011 Donna & Chet Bowler Scholarship to Butte High Senior Kelsey Alley. Kelsey is a 4.0 GPA valedictorian student planning to study Biology at the University of Montana in the fall. She is an active member of the community as well as at Butte High School. She par-ticipates in: student government and was the Sophomore Class President, Junior Class Vice President, and Senior Class Secretary; National Honor and National Science Honor Society member and treasurer; Key Club; Travel Club; Youth Leg-islature as well as volleyball and softball. She also is involved in the following community organizations as a volunteer; Teens in Partnership, Big Brothers & Sisters, Butte Cares, Talent Search, Special Olympics, and the Butte Food Bank. In her spare time Kelsey also managed to work at Big Sky Assisted Living where she gained a better understand of life and how fragile and precious it is. This experience also led to her pursuit into the biology and health fi elds. The Donna & Chet Bowler Scholarship is worth $3000 per year for 4 years. The Butte Education Foundation is proud to help Kelsey pursue her future goals.
