Busy Bees are committed to training and developing the capable staff we recruit.

Busy Bees’ dedicated Training Academy delivers in-house training for staff at all levels to build upon their knowledge and skills to deliver high quality childcare and a successful nursery.

We believe that training not only keeps our employees up to date on the latest sector developments, but also empowers and inspires them, so they have the knowledge and vision to carry out their role to a high standard.

Busy Bees’ commitment to training and development has been recognised as we have retained the Investors in People Award since 1994.

In this booklet you will find information for Short Courses that are available through the in-house Training Academy.

We understand the importance of regular training and therefore provide you with a wide variety of courses that are tailored to meet all aspects of your chosen career.

Within this booklet you will be able to read about each individual course and its content to see if it is suitable for you.

Many of the courses are run at several locations and on several different dates throughout the year to ensure there is always one for you. Other courses are available online and are accessible from either nursery or personal computers.

Duty of Care

For all those who work directly with children focusing on legal requirements and how they link to practice in the setting.

What is the course about?Duty of Care is described as a requirement to exercise a ‘reasonable’ degree of attention and caution to avoid harm to the chid. This course will give delegates a greater understanding of their duty of care and responsibilities within the nursery, according to legal and regulatory requirements

Safeguarding

Focusing on the different types of abuse practitioners may have to deal with and the procedures involved when reporting concerns and disclosures.

What is the course about?Safeguarding can be defined as ‘keeping children safe from harm, such as illness, abuse or injury’. The aim of the course is to ensure all members of the nursery team understandtheir role in safeguarding children and gain an understanding of their duty of care. Safeguarding is a broader concept than just child protection as it encompasses safety from other forms of harm other than child abuse.

What will I learn?How to contribute in safeguarding children against harm. How to spot the tell tale signs of child abuse and how to deal with this situation in a correct and professional manner

Looking at ways to prepare for your inspection using the statutory framework and action plans. For all staff involved in the inspection process.

What is the course about?To help you meet Ofsted’s expectations and give you support & knowledge to improve the nursery’s Ofsted grade

Who is the course for?Room Managers and above

What will I learn?What exactly Ofsted expect of you, your team and your nursery. Ideas on how to improve your next grade, as well as the confidence to go that step further in your setting.

need to feel and show empathy and sincerity, and above all,

listen. You need to take account of culture and context. This

course will guide you through the correct ways to interact with

children up to 3 years

children up to 3 years

What will I learn?This course will give the delegates an understanding of the

What is the course about?The course will show how to help & support staff with getting the most out of the nursery’s outdoor area for the benefit of the children

Who is the course for?All practitioners who work with children

What will I learn?The outdoor space and curriculum must harness the special nature of the outdoors, to offer the children what the indoors cannot. This should be the focus for outdoor provision and this course will show you how to complement and extend the provision indoors. How the nursery must take all reasonable steps to ensure that hazards to children – both indoors and outdoors - are kept to a minimum. How to provide adequate space to give scope for free movement and well spread activities

Outdoor Learning

Coldharbour Nurserycare (Internal Only)

For those staff who use Coldharbour for registering children, extra sessions, fees etc.

What is the course about?How are the nursery registers created? Which enquiries do I need to follow up? What is a suggested fee report? This course will answer these questions and many more. The course has been designed to teach the delegates the necessary skills and techniques of the database Nurserycare.

Who is the course for?The course is for any member of the nursery team who uses Nurserycare on a regular basis.

What will I learn?An understanding of how entering information in the correct fields will populate reports, which will aid the running of the nursery. How the invoices are produced from the information inputted and can be checked before being administered. You will learn not to be afraid of Coldharbour Nurserycare, and understand how it helps with the day to day managing and running of nursery.

What is the course about?Ever wondered what a fund source is and how they become in debt? How petty cash is controlled and who is accountable for it? This course covers various areas of nursery accounts from accepting payments to entering petty cash claims

Who is the course for?The course is aimed at any member of the team who deal with nursery payments, petty cash and controlling debt

What will I learn?Each and every fund source at nursery has the potential to become a debtor. This course will show you how to minimise these issues and rectify them if they happen. Petty cash is usedregularly in nursery, and it is important that it is administered, logged and recouped correctly

With the introduction of ‘See the Difference’ it is even more important that the Room Manager understands their role and is able to carry it out to the high standards set by Busy Bees.

infrastructure. This course will explain their role, how they

carry it out and how it effects each and every member of staff

What will I learn?The training mentor will be given guidance on how to instigate

the 8 week induction for staff members and how to ensure it is

completed correctly. It will also cover how to provide individual

support to all nursery staff, the importance of booking staff

onto training courses and the recording of these courses

and attendances. There will also be information on how the

training mentor supports the apprenticeship programme and

co-ordinates learning for members of staff undertaking the
