PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It was with great sadness that we all re-ceived the news that Tish had lost her battle with

cancer this month. I know that we have lost a wonderful friend to many in the guild, to quilting and to the guild itself. She was a wonderful supporter to me when I took on the duties of president and helped me though some tough days with her knowledge and wisdom. I will truly miss her in so many ways. I have been informed that there will not be a public service for Tish, but we will take a few moments at this month’s meeting for anyone that would like to speak, in tribute or about their friendship and memories.

We had a great program and workshop last month, I think we all really enjoyed having Cathy Van Bruggen with us. This month should be equally wonderful. Kathy Amparan from Three Generations will be with us to show some of her great techniques with paint and fabric. I’m really looking forward to it. There is still some space available in the workshop if you would like to attend.

Don’t forget about the Block of the Month. This month’s blocks are a little tougher so give yourself a bit of extra time. If you have fallen behind in previous months, that’s okay, you can bring in those blocks too as you catch up. I’m anxious to see some of the Wounded Warriors quilts that result from these great blocks everyone is making, so let’s keep those sewing machines humming and hope to see you all on the 21st.

COMFORT QUILTS

Seven comfort quilts were turned in at our April meeting and they’ve already been passed along to our local organizations in need. Thank you to Ruth Beattie, Denise Schiavone, Lorraine Taylor, Diane Borsyckowski, Jill Gilham and Carol Henderson — the quilts you donated will brighten someone’s day! We continue to collect quilts for both Doves (about 50”x70”) and Meals on Wheels (about 42”x 58”) and we are depending on everyone’s participation ! Please browse through the tub of fabric bundles at the May meeting, find a color combo that catches your eye and take it home to work on. Other than the general size guidelines, anything goes, so you can experiment with a fun design while you create a quilt that will warm someone’s heart. I always have batting available too, so contact me if you need anything for your 2012 Comfort Quilt projects. Jeanne Arnieri, 909-806-0436,

WOUNDED WARRIORS So much generosity to report this Month for our Wounded Warriors project! Thank you to Carol Sterling who donated a whole bolt of patriotic fabric, along with related yardage pieces. We’re also grateful to Denise Schiavone, who continues to weed out her stash and pass along large pieces of fabric that we can use for backings. Thank you also to Jacqué Holmes, who donated a lovely piece of red-white-and-blue top that we’ll get finished soon. Wasn’t it fun to see the progress on our current Wounded Warriors quilt at our April meeting? The blocks were donated by YOU, the backing by Jill Gilham, the machine quilting by Walt and Gale Murphy and the quilt is now being bound by Denise Schiavone truly a group project! We have three more quilts currently “in the works” and we’re looking forward to sending them all to the military hospital in Afghanistan. Lots of blocks were donated at last month’s meeting also and soon we’ll have enough for another quilt or two. Please help us out by making a 12½” block using red white and blue fabrics in any pattern you like.

TISH REMEMBERED

We received many emails following the passing of our dear friend. Here are two, we thought we would share with you…..

From JoAnn Mark: Peace be to dearest Tish: Her spirit will remain inside me as a reminder of courage, love of life, happiness and sunshine. Maybe that is the best memory that any of us can leave behind when we make our transformation to whatever is next. I cherish her memory and revere the way she faced her terrible illness. She was a blessing to all who knew her.

From Gay Joyner: My heart is broken, I was hoping she would beat the cancer, she was so strong and optimistic. She will always be in my thoughts. It is not easy losing someone so dear, but we have to remember the good times, she loved life and her dear husband Dave. Also quilting, her horses and all of her friends, Tish has a head start on Heaven. We will meet again in heaven, And be together for ever more She will be waiting to welcome us When we arrive at heavens door. Rest in peace dear Tish….with love

MEMORIAL DOATIO

In honor of Tish and in loving memory of the wonderful presence she had in our lives, the guild has made a $500 donation to the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Unit. As husband Dave expressed, their help made all the difference in keeping Tish comfortable and relaxed. Hopefully, our donation will support this group’s work as they provide assistance to someone else in our commu-nity having a similar experience. If you’d care to make an additional private donation in remembrance of Tish, the following contact information may be used:

Handy Hint:

FOUDATIO PIECIG O MUSLI Do you enjoy paper piecing but dislike removing all those little paper fragments with tweezers? Try piecing on muslin. Muslin doesn’t need to be removed and can be left in the quilt to make it more stable. When foundation piecing we don’t always pay attention to the grain line of the small pieces of fabric so the edges of our foundation may be on the bias and cause stretching. Muslin foundations will keep the block edges from stretching. Muslin foundations don’t need to be hand traced. They can be made on the copier. Iron freezer paper on the back of the muslin before copying.

Challenge 2012

We have three Challenge kits left! You still have time as this is a small project just in case just in case you hadn’t decided to make one this year. There are so many garden and bug fabrics available. No need to panic ! They do not have to be completed until our august meeting and it’s a lot of fun. We are very excited for the big reveal in August when we will see all the creativity of our members!

Handy Hint: If you don’t have a copier to transfer a pattern. Buy a hot iron transfer pencil usually a magenta color. Draw one accurate pattern piece. Iron it on your white muslin and you can use it for many copies. When too light, redraw on the same pattern for accuracy and iron again for several more.

BASKETS FOR OUR QUILT SHOW

Our Quilt Show is fast approaching & we need to start thinking about all of the beautiful baskets that we make each year!! This year the guild as a whole will be putting 2 baskets together, & each of our small groups will be putting together a basket for their small group. The theme’s for the guilds baskets will be a Sewing Basket & a Emergency Prepared Basket. We have many wonderful things donated to our guild for Quilting so we will include those items, but will need more items to fill the basket. The Emergency Preparedness Bas-ket we will need to fill with donations from the guild members. We will be needing items such as Flash Light, Small Radio or Wind up Radio, 5 Gallon Con-tainer for Water, First Aid Kit, non perishable Food Items, matches, Filter for

Purifying Water, Thermal Blanket or Sleeping Bag,

Container for Storing Cash, Container for Medicine

Storage. If you are not in a small group we would like each of you to ask for a donation from a local business or buy an item to go into the baskets. Each of the small groups donate to make their individual baskets and do an amazing job!!!!!! So if you are not in a small group be thinking about what you would like to donate to either the Sewing Basket or the Emergency Preparedness Basket...Small Groups please pick the theme of the basket your group wants to make and there will be a sign up sheet at the next meeting. Please sign up for the item that you want to bring so we don’t have duplicates. Thank you in advance to all of you that help with these baskets. They are truly amazing each & every year..

QUILT SHOW

The Quilt Show committee met on April 29th at Jacqué’s and Kay’s home. We continued to make a few plans, although it is not too busy this early in the year. In summary- tickets and flyers have been delivered to us from the printer and are being distributed. Potential vendors have been contacted and some have responded. Ann Turley, the judge has been selected and will be coming to judge our quilts on August 28th at Janet Walz’s home again . Mini-group baskets and the two “common” (whole guild) baskets are planned and Susan Meyers will be addressing this aspect in her column on page 9. As we move into the summer, more activities will be popping up and eventually sign-up sheets will be presented at the monthly guild meetings to get all you quilters to volunteer an hour of your time in our show on Labor Day weekend. Sandi Cannarella

L I B R A R Y

Greetings! Remember our up coming book sale - - a blow-out planned for our June Guild Meeting. For details, please stop by. In April (best guestimate), only one-third to one-half of the books were displayed. The goal is to have substantially more available at the May meeting. Am trying to come up with a portable, easy, and light weight way for roughly ten boxes of books to make the monthly meeting commute with me A special thank you to the guild member who donated a hand full of books. Sorry, didn’t catch your name and am a terrible detective - - though I did try. This newest additions to our library is five novels. “The Quilters Daughter” by Wanda Brunsteller and four novels by Jennifer Chiaverini. “The Winding Ways

Quilt”, “The Quilter’s Legacy”, The Cross-Country

Quilters” &“The Master Quilter” These books will be designated as books featured in the Library’s May The Bear Facts bulletin article. We are as always your lending library - - so please come in and check-out our selection. Reminder: No computer, so no E-mail. If you need to reach me, please call. The best days and hours are Monday through Friday from 10am to 7:30pm. When the subject can’t wait, it’s ok to call on Saturday 909-584-1716 See your soon,

2012 PROGRAMS & WORKSHOPS MAY’S program will be presented by Kathy

Amparn from Three Generations. The lecture is “From Polyester to Paint”. Kathy will share her quilt-ing journey starting in 1975, making her first quilt out of polyester to her current passion, painted quilts. She says she’s not afraid to show us all her mistakes and fixes-sometimes, Kathy says, we just need to loosen up and laugh at ourselves. Do plan to join us at the meeting. The next day’s workshop will be “Paint your Quilt”. See the supply list. We will learn some interesting techniques and uses for Paint sticks on quilts and clothing. You will learn how to “jazz up” a quilt, add embellishments, paint a label or just cover a stain. Join us for the workshop. You’ll start looking at quilts in a whole new light. JUE—Sue Rasmussen will present “A Desperate Housewife’s Journey for the fun evening. This is Sue’s journey of quilt making and her life. I have heard this talk and I think you will really enjoy it. The workshop will be a Landscape Pictorial Quilt. This class is an introduction to the curved machine piecing technique for landscape and pictorial quilts. In this class, students will cover design techniques, fabric choices, marking, sewing and pattern development working directly with fabric. To simplify and allow more time for learning these techniques, Sue has designed a simple landscape pattern (22”x28”) of a Single Tree Landscape, available to students in this class. By utilizing this pattern, students will immedi-ately begin learning the process of working on land-scape quilts without taking hours to design an indi-vidual piece. Techniques that all levels of quilters will enjoy. July-Anne Copeland has been rescheduled to present her “How Quilts are Valued” talk. You are invited to bring old or contemporary quilts, dolls, wearable art, etc and Anne will give us information and details about your items. Anne will be at the workshop to help you repair or finish quilt’s etc. August—Challenge Quilt Reveal. Workshop, boutique or comfort quilts. September—Susie Meyers—How to prepare a quilt for quilting.—Show Wrap-up. Workshop, T-shirt quilts with Janet Walz.

WORKSHOP - SIG UP SHEETS

Sign-up sheets will be available at the meeting. Cost for workshop is $15 for members & $25 for non-members. Payment is due at the time of signing. There will be a supply list avail-able for each class.
