President Message I am some excited about my guild role this year. I have already done a lot of organizing

behind the scenes. It is my hopes at the end of the year, everyone says, what a lot of fun

we had!!

I will be showing the president’s quilt at the meeting. I decided to build it on our website so

you can go back and get the info anytime. Also if you are not making it, you do not have to

read about it in the newsletter. Here it is

We still do not have a chairperson for Legacy. Maybe you know a new mother that is home

and you could help her make a baby quilt. The guild would cover costs. Please see me if you

WQG Minutes June 5, 2017

Opening Remarks, Welcome - After a delicious catered supper (Thanks to the CWL

of St. Gertrude’s Parish) the meeting was called to order by upcoming President

Janet Wright.

Old Home Week Hobby Show is looking for contributions to the show. Janet

encouraged participation from members. Terry will send an email with more

information about the Old Home Week Hobby Show.

Augusta Quilt Show is to be held on July 29. Houlton Quilt Guild has invited us to

go with them on a bus for a day trip. The cost is $45.00 per person. Tell Janet W if

you are interested.

Approval of Agenda, as published in June 2017 newsletter – It was moved by Linda

Steeves and seconded by Colleen McKee the approval of the agenda. Carried

Approval of minutes May, as published in June 2017 newsletter – It was moved by

Sandy Corey and seconded by Sue Hayden the approval of the minutes. Carried.

Business arising from the minutes -

Correspondence – thank you card from Larry Mayhew as he undergoes cancer

treatments. Thank you for the Sympathy card from Joyce Richard in the passing of

her brother. A card from Bobbi Jo Giberson thanking the Guild for the quilt. Thank

you from Vendor Charlotte Cook for the quilt show opportunity. She had good sales

and appreciated the opportunity to network.

Treasurers Report – as published in June 2017 newsletter – It was moved by Kim

Releeder and seconded by Trisha Robinson the approval of the Treasurers Report

as published. Carried.

Committee Reports, as per Newsletter June 2017 - Janet W. asked if you wish to

have time to speak during the meetings about your committee, that you speak to

her prior to the meeting so that you can be added to the agenda.

Quilt Show 2017 - Betty Doherty reported. No final report yet. There will be

another meeting of the Committee after which Terry will send out a final report via

email. We had very good attendance and positive feedback. Thank you to Betty and

the Committee for doing a great job on the Quilt Show. Kim said that if you have

receipts she will reimburse you.

Retreat – Annette Dykeman reported that Retreat is fully booked. There are three

names on the waitlist. The challenge for retreat is 150 Comfort Bags. Make some if

you have time over the summer. Pattern will be placed on the WQG facebook page.

Super Saturday – Betty and Sue are staying on for Super Saturday for next year. If you

have any ideas or want to have something taught, please speak to either of them.

New Business –

Need somewhere to store the signs for the quilt show. Betty has offered to

provide temporary storage until Wayne Long has his storage bin ready. Sue moved,

Trisha seconded, that we spend up to $500, for the cost of building the storage bin

for Quilt Show equipment, signage etc. at Wayne Long’s place. Approved. Betty also

suggested that we order 10 new racks be built before the next quilt show in 2019.

Jolene Clark has agreed to take charge of Program in 2017-18.

Janet Wright has designed a quilt and she will introduce it in September as a Block of the

Month called the President’s Quilt.

Jolene asked that each member get a Row by Row block over the summer and bring

it back in September. You can join the Row by Row facebook page. You need to visit

a quilt shop sometime after June 21st to get a block pattern.

Program - Doreen chaired the Program challenge results - Sandy Corey won third price for a

star quilt. Susanne Hunter won second prize. Janet Wright won first prize for a wheel.

Diane Scott won the bead challenge draw. Kathy Boone completed the June Challenge, and

Janet Melanson completed and showed the June, July and August challenge projects. Ellen

Armour won the project draw for this year’s challenges. Sandy Corey won the second draw. Thank you Doreen for a great year of Program leadership.

Janet made a pitch for someone to take on the Legacy for next year.

Ann Grant agreed to become the Librarian for the next year.

Janet presented certificates of membership for 5, 10, and 15 year memberships.

Fabric Draw – Five lucky ladies received a Kaffe Fassett fat quarter pack. Winners

are Janet Melanson, Jackie Walker, Edith Scott (new member), Lucille Kearney, and

Shirley Dunphy. Thank you Sandra for organizing the Fabric Draw for this past

year. Lots of prizes have been enjoyed by lucky winners!

Show and Tell – We were awed and inspired by the workmanship of members.

Guild pin project…..

We are getting to the end of the guild pins that we have been giving to new

members and for selling at our quilt show. So the President asked me to do some

research into ordering a new supply for future use. The company that the pins were

originally ordered from is no longer in business so I have found two Canadian firms

on line and have also spoken to Dana at Kamden Printing where we get our guild

name tags from. The information is as follows:

of committee chairs, dates for meeting and Super Saturday dates. Marilyn

Program Committee:

Welcome back Quilting Friends. I hope you all had a wonderful summer. Where did your Row by Rows find you visiting? Did you find a new favorite shop? I have searched, looked and read much this summer. Traditionally, I am busy with work, the lake and haying in the summer. Through my reading and looking, I continue to find myself drawn to different articles and I thought it may be fun to explore together! So here we go!!

WHAT IS MODERN QUILTING? As found on WWW.THEMODERNQUILTGUILD.COM It includes, but is not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. Well that is a long and lengthy explanation but I think we can work with it. It is sometimes referred to as Modern traditionalism. Or the updating of classic quilt pattern and design. How can we identify an item, a quilt or piece as modern? What is the use of color or print? Are they bold? Does it create high contrast? Does it include sashing or was more negative space used? Modern quilting has existed in many forms for much of the 20th century. However, we did not see a movement of quilters identifying as modern until the 2000’s. Many aspects of our daily lives have contributed to the grown of the movement. Social media and the web. Most everyone carries a digital camera with them today in some form. Each of these things has in turn had an impact on the fabric industry. The one rule of modern quilting is there is no rules! PS: during my surfing I found this fun item! Moda Pallette Builder. This is a website where you upload a photo and then the specific colors are selected and you can then find Moda fabrics that coordinate with the photo, as well as Aurifil Threads and Hex Values. http://blog.modafabrics.com/team/zen-chic/ Brigitte Heiland gave a presentation at QuiltCon. MYSTERY QUILT: 64X84” FINISHED This year I will be setting out a few challenges. Hint: We are exploring Modern quilting step out of the box see what you can find! Select fabrics that have good contrast with each other. Solid-looking fabrics or ones with small prints are ideal. Fabric Requirements: Dark fabric 4 yards Medium fabric 1½ yards Light background fabric 2 yards Binding fabric Backing fabric

Wash and iron all fabric prior to cutting. FAT QUARTER RAFFLE: We will be doing a fat quarter raffle in September. If you wish to participate please bring a fat quarter with the theme fall leaves.

Community Quilts

June thru August we gave out 13 quilts.

We received a couple of lots of fabric from ladies who have stopped sewing.

I am working on a few kits to bring to the next meeting.

For comfort quilts a good size is 50 X 70 or that general range.

Quilting at Riverside Court – 2017 – 2018

The Woodstock Quilt Guild will be starting Tuesday afternoon quilt sessions with the

Seniors at Riverside Court again and we will need volunteers to help the Seniors put

together small quilts which will become part of the Community quilt inventory for the 2017/18 quilting year. The first session has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 19th.

At least 3 volunteers are needed and should be able to start at 12:30 p.m. in order to

prepare the quilt on the quilt frame. The seniors will be ready to work on the quilt at 1:00

p.m. We will be tying the quilt and if you have not put one together with this method, this

would be a good place to learn. Based on past sessions, we have been able to complete a quilt

in an hour so we should be finished by 2:15 p.m. just in time for afternoon tea and cookies (should have time to stay and visit with the seniors).

The next dates planned so far will be: Tuesday, October 3rd ; Tuesday, October 17th;

Tuesday, October 31st

Tuesday, November 14th ; Tuesday, November28th

Tuesday, December 12th

Library Report

Hello, I am Ann Grant and I’ll be looking after the library this year! Shelley Dionne,

our past librarian has given me some great advice so I hope I will be able to do a

good job.

My plan this week is to organize and catalogue what we have so I can retire and

donate a few of the old books and order some new ones. If anyone has any requests

or suggestions of what new books they would like to see, by all means e-mail me

at grantam@xplornet.ca

I understand there are several books overdue, if they could be returned by the

first meeting it would greatly help me in moving forward with the organizing and

purchasing for this year.

Refreshment

To Members of the Guild, I ( Maxine ODonnell ) would like to request or permission

on a vote to bring back light snacks for during our coffee and tea breaks?

Reason I would like to do so is concerning the working people who do not have time

to have supper or anything to eat and it makes it a long day for those who do not

get that time to eat. I also feel it's much needed to have at least something with

coffee and tea..

Also I am looking for a partner to help me out with refreshments due to my work

schedules throughout the year.,Also unless it rains on the day of our October

meeting I will not be available to attend Guild meeting to do refreshments due to

long Harvest work hours..

Food Bank Project Ladies of the Woodstock Quilt Guild-

For those who don’t know me, my name is Kathy Boone and have been a member of the

guild for a number of years. I would like to see if anyone would be interested in doing a

quilting project for the Valley Food Bank. I volunteer there at least once a week and you

never know what will be donated!

A few Fridays ago, we came in to find two boxes of quilt blocks in the entryway. On closer

inspection, there looked to be a full life’s worth of work. These blocks were done with

fabric paint and looking at patterns & condition of plastic bags it appears to have been done

in the 1980’s. The staff was all for either recycling or consigning them to the garbage.

Some were just stunning so I rescued them. So far I have made 11 tops and there are 15

sets left! (Will show at meeting). I showed the tops to the manager of the food bank &

promised that I would have 3 made up so they could sell raffle tickets on them for

Christmas. She was so struck by them she decided that all could be raffled off throughout

the year. They are always looking for ways to make money which is in short supply. I don’t

think she realizes the amount of time (months / years) that I would need to complete

these. Therefore, I’m appealing to you to see if there is interest in doing this as a group.
