SEPTEMBER 1 IS A SIGNIFICANT

date, for all of us in the Buddhist

Churches of America as well as for

myself personally. On September 1,

1899, two ministers dispatched by

Nishi Hongwanji arrived in San

many struggles and diffi culties. And

yet, the existence of our temples and

communities has allowed the teachings

of Shinran Shonin and the Buddha to

September 1 was a signifi cant

date twice in my life. On September 1,

1996, having decided that I wanted to

Jr. YBA News BY KELSEY HIROTA

HELLO EVERYONE! I HOPE SUMMER

has been good to everyone - I, on

the other hand, have been subject to

the Japan August heat for the bet-

ter part of a month. Anyhow, I have

reports from the YBA about summer

activities, as well as our new cabinet

members.

On the weekend of July 9th, we

had a sleepaway trip in Angel’s Camp.

Thank you so much to the chaper-

ones, as well as Linda Taga-Anderson

for getting us the timeshare spot!

On September 3-4, members

will attend the Central Cal Volleyball

Mixer in Fresno. There, members

of Jr. YBA chapters from all over

California come to get to know each

other through good old team-build-

ing and fi erce competition. Thank you

to all the parents who will be driving

us all the way down to Fresno - the

drive is brutal. We all appreciate you

very much!

Finally, I would like to announce

the new offi cial Oakland Jr. YBA

cabinet as it is at the moment. Our

new co-presidents will be Mia Li (re-

turning for her second year) and

Sydney Wong, with Martha Castro

as vice-president. The correspond-

ing secretary is Alyssa Cho, and the

returning treasurer is Rachel Hirota.

Leila Neishi will serve as historian,

and I will be returning for my third

year as publicity chairperson (Anoth-

er year of Busshin articles from me!

*cheering begins in the background*).

Grant Kamita will be the religious

chairperson, and the position of

corresponding secretary and Bay

District rep are still open. In addi-

tion, Mia Li will also be serving as the

Bay District co-president, the ruling

cabinet over all the Jr. YBA chapters

in the Bay Area.

That will conclude this summer’s

news. Thank you so much for reading,

and I look forward to a whole new

year of writing for the Busshin. See

you next time!

minister for ten years.

I’ve been looking ahead to writing

this article for a long time. Each month

when I have to write my article, I think,

can I write about my 10th anniversary

as a minister yet? Don’t forget to write

that one when it’s time! Well, I almost

forgot! Fortunately I remembered, but

now that it’s here, I’m not sure where

to go with it. Simply looking backwards

isn’t enough. Instead, I am reminded to

look back with gratitude – to my par-

ents, family and friends over the years;

to all the people that were part of my

encounter with Buddhism and that

helped give me the opportunity to

study Buddhism; to the members of the

various BCA temples for their support,

especially the two temples that I have

served: the Buddhist Church of Lodi

and the Buddhist Church of Oakland.

Thank you all!!!

THE DHARMA SCHOOL HAS BEEN

on vacation for July. We hope you all

enjoyed the Picnic at Kennedy Grove.

Thank you to HOST 8 and friends for

a great picnic and to the Jr. YBA for

creating the games for the school

age folks! We are looking forward to

a happy Obon Festival.

Our 2016-2017 Dharma School

year begins on September 11 with the

Dharma Service at 10:00 am. Come

early for breakfast treats! The Dhar-

ma School teachers, Ms. Kathy Aoki

(grades K,1,2), Mrs. Delia Ikeda and

Ms. Jun Hamamoto (grades 3,4,5),

and Mrs. Maya Lawrence (Middle

School) are looking forward to seeing

you all. We welcome new students,

too. Please complete the family

registration form (page 4) if you have

any changes from the previous year

(phones, address, emails).

Happy Birthday We wish a happy birthday to the

AFTER TAKING A SUMMER BREAK

we will resume our Monthly Evening

Dharma Service and Discussion with

Reverend Harry Gyokyo Bridge on

Wednesday, September 14th from

7:00 to 8:30 p.m. These monthly

sessions will have a new focus:

Mindfulness and Buddhism. We

hope you will join us as we focus on

living a life of greater compassion and

gratitude through the practice

of mindfulness. We also will hold

the Monthly Dharma Study Class on

Saturday, September 17, 2016 from

2:00-4:00 p.m.

Our Fall Ohigan Family Dharma

Service will be on Sunday, September

18th beginning at 10:00 a.m. This is

a wonderful observance – particu-

larly for our time-crunched, stress-

ful lives – which allows us to pause

and refl ect on cultivating the balance

and harmony that nature exemplifi es

during this time of the Fall Equinox. The

Ohigan Adult Dharma Service will

follow at 10:45 a.m. with a Dharma

Talk by Reverend Bridge and we

hope you will stay afterwards for de-

licious refreshments provided by our

Ho-On Service Team #10 led by Steve

Terusaki. Our Buddhist Educa-

tion Committee will meet at

11:30 a.m. in the small chapel

during refreshments to continue to

plan future educational programs and

activities. If you have an interest in the

Buddhist education opportunities we

offer at BCO, you are most welcome

to attend – your input and participa-

tion are appreciated.

Please remember to save

the date for our upcoming Life

Enrichment program on Saturday,

October 15, 2016, 2:00-4:00 p.m., a

screening of the documentary fi lm

Hidden Legacy: Japanese Traditional

Performing Arts in the WWII Internment

Camps presented by Shirley Kazuyo

Muramoto-Wong. Please see the fl yer

for details.

SINCERE THANKS TO MRS. ALICE

Shibata for her very generous

monetary donation to the organiza-

tion. Thanks much Alice.

We are happy to welcome into

our fold, Mr. George Matsui, a long

time church member. I know you will

enjoy the twice a month togetherness

with your many friends. Welcome

George! Nice to have you join us.

Due to the Obon events, the

regular meet on Thursday, August 4,

is being cancelled however, those

who are knitting will meet on this

date as Ms. Rene Grohl will be in

attendance to help us proceed in

our work. The meet will take place at

the usual time of 10:00 a.m. We will

be back to our regular schedule on

Thursday, August 18.

We understand our wonder-

ful Yoga leader, Patti Hirota, is

hobbling around with a sprained an-

kle. So sorry to hear of your mishap,

Patti, and hoping you are not in too

much pain. Please do heal fast so you

can come back to us soon.

Mrs. Fusae Yoshida is looking into

the possibility of obtaining a movie

about the Sugihara family. Many of

you may have heard or seen the mov-

ie. Hopefully, we should know by our

next meet if it will become a reality.

On Obon: At press time, our

Annual Obon Festival had not yet oc-

curred. Many thanks in advance to

our members, volunteers and friends

for their hard work. I’m disappointed

that I won’t be in attendance, this

year, as I will be on a business trip.

Special thanks to Linda Minamoto for

coordinating this huge event.

BEC Life Enrichment Program:

On Saturday, October 15th, the Bud-

dhist Education Committee will

present Hidden Legacy: Japanese

Traditional Performing Arts in the

WWII Internment Camps, a one-hour

documentary of pictures, fi lm clips,

performances and interviews with

interned Japanese-Americans, and

how they enriched the camps with

song and dance. The program will be

hosted by BCO member Shirley Mu-

BUDDHIST CHURCH OF OAKLAND 29th ANNUAL BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT

Dear Members and Friends:

The Buddhist Church of Oakland is proud to sponsor its 29th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament to be held at the Mira Vista Golf & Country Club, 7901 Cutting Boulevard, El Cerrito, CA 94530 on Monday, October 17, 2016. It is with deepest gratitude and appreciation to the many participants and donors over the years that we are able to continue having this annual event.

We are, once again, offering corporate sponsorships to invite local community organizations, companies or individuals to further participate in the church’s programs including community outreach. Three levels of corporate sponsorship are available. Each level provides corporate representatives to participate as well as opportunities to identify your company or business in our program and at the golf course.

Other opportunities include providing a donation that could be used as a raffle or door prize. We also ask you to consider supporting this fundraiser by being a hole sponsor for the tournament. In recognition of your monetary donation of $100 or more for the hole sponsor, a sign advertising your business or your personal sponsorship will be displayed at one of the 18 tee areas and will be acknowledged in the printed program.

A list of the types of sponsorships and donations are on the second page. In order for your donation to be properly acknowledged in the program, please complete and return the form on Page 2 to the church by FRIDAY, September 23.

Your consideration of supporting this event is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Keiju Terada, Committee Chair
