One thing that it teaches is that whenever we are faced with something, whether it is an object, a person, even an idea, there are three possible responses: it can be positive, negative, or neu- tral. Positive sounds like a good thing, but in Buddhist terms this often means desire or attachment – one of the Three Poisons. The neg- ative response, again in terms of the Three Poisons, is anger, but this isn’t the only possibility. Maybe a better term is “aversion” – it could be anger, but it could also be fear. Writing definitely causes aver- sion in me. Part of it may be fear based – I think that I approach writing with an unconscious as- sumption that I will fail. I am actu- ally pretty sure that this is the case, because even in areas that I am confident (music, public speaking) I often hear a little voice inside my head saying, “what if this time you don’t come up with anything?” The ideal approach is to not give in to this fear and aversion. Often, it is only by approaching one’s fears head on that anything is accomplished. Part of the process is to recognize that these forces are present, otherwise they may over- whelm us without us understand- ing what is actually going on. It ap- pears to have worked in this case, since my article is almost done! I will close by noting that the Buddha is often depicted in statues and paintings with his right hand held up, palm out – this is called the “fearlessness gesture” or abhaya mudra. This fearlessness is part of the benefit that the teachings of the Buddha offer. It doesn’t come easy – we still need to live our lives and try and face our fears, hopefully to move through them and grow in the process. In gassho, Rev. IN THIS ISSUE

Writing these Busshin articles is one of the most difficult

things in my entire life. Each month I have to come up with something to say, and it is a very rare occa-sion that I am able to just sit down and come up with something by the deadline. In fact, this current article is being written three days late! I’m not sure why this is. I cer-tainly have always had a difficult time with writing.

What does Buddhism have to say about this? One thing that it teaches is that whenever we are faced with something, whether it is an object, a person, even an idea, there are three possible responses: it can be positive, negative, or neu-tral. Positive sounds like a good thing, but in Buddhist terms this often means desire or attachment – one of the Three Poisons. The neg-ative response, again in terms of the Three Poisons, is anger, but this isn’t the only possibility. Maybe a better term is “aversion” – it could be anger, but it could also be fear.

Writing definitely causes aver-sion in me. Part of it may be fear based – I think that I approach writing with an unconscious as-

sumption that I will fail. I am actu-ally pretty sure that this is the case, because even in areas that I am confident (music, public speaking) I often hear a little voice inside my head saying, “what if this time you don’t come up with anything?”

The ideal approach is to not give in to this fear and aversion. Often, it is only by approaching one’s fears head on that anything is accomplished. Part of the process is to recognize that these forces are present, otherwise they may over-whelm us without us understand-ing what is actually going on. It ap-pears to have worked in this case, since my article is almost done!

BUSSHIN FEBRUARY 2014

Happy New Year everyone! What a busy month Decem-

ber was. It started with our Bodhi Day service and the wonderful skit that the Jr. YBA performed. It was very entertaining; thank you Jr. YBA. OBWA’s bonenkai followed the Bodhi Day and shotsuki ser-vices. The obento lunch was deli-cious and we were treated to line dancing by Jean Nakazono’s class and then karaoke singing by our karaoke group. Thank you to those groups. All in all it was a fun time.

The next weekend was mochitsuki. Although we had a slight glitch with the equipment, we made it through (a special thanks to our mechanics: Don Kaneshige, Al Kanzaki, Cliff Yokomizo and Ron Nomura). A special thank you to Koda Farms for their gen-erous donation of the rice. It was great to see the enthusiasm of the teenagers and, oh yes, the flour fights! Thanks to everyone who came out to help; it definitely was a group effort.

The month and year ended with the New Year’s Eve or Joya-E service. All those in attendance got to ring the bell and enjoy delicious soba noodles afterward. There were

about 120 persons in attendance which was phenomenal, even May-or Jean Quan attended! Thanks to our otoki chairpersons Gary Tomi-naga, Mark Shimamoto and Steve Terusaki. Also thanks to those who helped with the preparation and cleanup.

I have mixed feelings about the holiday season. It can be stress-ful with so much to do but it is also the best time of the year be-cause families usually get together. My daughters, Tara and Mariko, always come home for oshogatsu and I look forward to their visit. They love the tradition and it is a way of remembering their pater-nal grandparents, Tosh and Harue. The Minamoto clan all get together to cook and laugh and reminisce about how Grandma/Grandpa used to do it this way or that way. It re-ally is an enjoyable time.

I want to thank everyone for their support throughout the year. BCO is in great shape religiously with Rev. Harry’s guidance and financially with your generosity. I know that I can count on your con-tinued support in 2014!

BUSSHIN COLLATION: Sunday, February 9, 2014 by Dharma School

The BCO has joined EWASTE 4 GOOD, a

group that collects E WASTE and recycles it! The com-pany then gives the BCO a portion of the proceeds. E WASTE is basically anything electronic that you want to get rid of: TV’s, computers, fax machines, copiers, cell phones, small appliances, speakers, scanners, vacuum cleaners, video games, pow-er tools, stereos. Members of the church can schedule a pick-up by calling 1-800-317-3112 or by going on-line to www.eWaste4good.com. EWASTE4GOOD will pick up from your home for free. Your pick-up time may vary a few days, depending on their schedule. In addition to being a fund-raiser for the church, you are also recycling equipment and keeping it out of land-fills. That is good for everybody!! Flyers are available at church. You can also contact Maya Lawrence ([email protected]) if you have questions.

Dharma School News...By Maya LawRence

Thank you to all the Dharma School children, parents, grand-

parents and teachers who make our Dharma School a vibrant, exciting and fun place to be! We hope that 2014 – the Year of the Horse - will be another wonderful year. The end of the year reminds us to be grateful to all of the many families and teach-ers who came before us, developed programs, built classrooms, and paved the way so that we could have our beautiful church. Thank you!

The Dharma School welcomed a new student to the High School Senior class. Mika Taga and her mother Linda Taga recently moved to Oakland and are attending our Dharma School. Welcome!

Thank you to all of the families who came to Mochitsuki and end-ed the year in a cloud of rice flour. Thank you to Donna Castro, Mar-tha Castro, Renie Yoshida Grohl and Robert Noguchi for setting up the “rest area” in my absence.

You have all done a wonderful job collecting nonperishable foods for the Alameda County Foodbank. As of December 7, we had col-lected 231 items. Only a few more and we’ll be at 300 – and we’ll have an ice cream sundae Sunday on February 23.

We would like to thank our gen-erous donors for their dana to the Dharma School:

David Hirota and Katie San-bongi in honor of Kelsey’s and Ra-chel ‘s birthdays

Mrs. I Uota in honor of her granddaughter, Rina Horii’s birthday

Happy Birthday to our students born in January:

Joshua Lang, Matthew Li, Kyle Wong and Ryan Wong

Wishing you all the best!!

BCO Greeters Needed

Isn’t it always nice to be greeted with a smile and a welcome? It

makes one feel valued and cared for, whether you are a long time Sangha member or a new comer to Buddhism. A greeter need only be welcoming and ready to introduce a new comer, share a little about

our church (we do have pamphlets to give out) and give a new comer some help with our service – large purple book, small purple book and blue binder can be very confusing! We have some folks signed up to be greeters, but we still could use some more help. Please feel free to write

your name on the board beside the coffee machine and any of the “veterans” would be glad to answer questions. As a special bonus, Maya Lawrence will make you a name badge!!

As we enter the new year, we hope everyone enjoyed a pleas-ant holiday with family and friends.

On December 5, 2013, with approximately 20 members and guests in attendance, a delightful luncheon was enjoyed by all at the Kamakura Restaurant in Al-ameda. Guests present were our Reverend Harry Bridge and

Mrs. Mika Bridge and our wonderful Yoga instructor, Ms. Patti Hirota.

We thank everyone for their support and attendance dur-ing the past year. Thanks to Mrs. Jean Nakazono for leading the group, to Mrs. Fu-sae Yoshida for managing the treasury department.

As the New Year progresses we will keep you informed of our activities. We also welcome any new members who are in-terested in joining the group. Please contact Mrs. Nakazono or any present members.

Wishing all a Happy and Healthy New Year.
