    BUSINESS NAME

We are now in the season of Epiphany. As I write this article, we have just celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6. During my Wednesday devotion, I talked about House Blessings. I thought this would be something nice to share in the newsletter with those who might not have access to Facebook. House Blessings are

customarily done during the season of Epiphany; however, they can be done any time of the year. The Epiphany season begins on the 12th day of Christmas with the arrival of the Wise Men. The Wise Men proclaim to the world the place where the Christ child lives—which is a manger in Bethlehem with his mother, Mary. We don't know how many Wise Men there really were, but tradition says there were three—Balthasar, Melchior, and Caspar. The purpose of blessing a home is to let all who enter that home know that God lives there. A House Blessing begins at the front door by writing on, or over, the door with chalk 20+C+M+B+21. It is a sign to all that enter this home that the Wise Men have visited and that Christ lives in this home. After the chalk mark is made, there is a prayer and a verse of scripture is read. Upon entering the home, each room is subsequently blessed with a prayer and a bible verse.

This is a year when we have spent most of our time in our homes—and haven’t been able to gather in our holy place on State Street. If there has ever been a year that we needed a blessing of our home—and a reminder that Christ is in it—this is the year. I can not physically do a blessing of your homes but I do invite you to do a blessing. Gather all the people with whom you live, or by yourself, and with chalk inscribe 20+C+M+B+21 on your entrance door. After doing this, read this verse:

A reading from Romans: Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the

    glory of God. (Romans 15:7)

Let us pray. O God, bless all who visit this home; may they find here warmth and peace. Amen.

When this has been done, enter your home, light a candle and know the presence and blessing of the Christ who lives in your home. God’s Peace Pastor Matt

MISSION STATEMENT: To connect ourselves and others to Christ through acts of faith and love.

First Evangelical Lutheran Church |COUNCIL CHECK IN

    Call to Order

    Pastor Matt opened the meeting.

    COVID-19 Check In

Pastor Matt reviewed that we will be following the COVID gathering recommen-

dations from the NC synod and state of NC. The Synod Council is expected to

make a recommendation for congregations on December 10th.

The surrounding downtown Lexington churches are meeting outdoors.

Two Lutheran churches in our conference were meeting indoors and are moving

back outdoors. The Pastors stated it has been somewhat difficult to make that

    transition from indoors to outdoors.

Some concern exists that if we begin indoor limited gathering worship people who

currently join us in their cars would not continue to attend since they wouldn’t

have a visual of worship. Additionally, the idea of a second viewing area in the

Family Life Center has been met with some disinterest from congregates. The feel-

ing being that if watching on a screen, one may as well stay home to watch.

Some discussion was had on the limited number of 10 people in the sanctuary for

worship could leave out a majority of the congregants who are worshiping weekly

    now.

Using the platform SignupGenius was again discussed for allowing 10 people to

sign up in a fair way for Sunday worship when it is moved indoors.

One option is to record (or live stream) the worship service in the sanctuary limited

to 10 congregants and worship leaders when the weather no longer permits out-

    door worship.

    Attendees:

    Frank Bell

    Katie Tulledge

    Melissa Morris

    Rick Grubb

    Dr. Dalane Kitzman

    Pastor Matt Miller

    Amanda Hathcock

Absent: John Leonard, Berry Odum, Bleasha Carroll, James Whitaker

First Evangelical Lutheran Church |COUNCIL CHECK IN

If livestreaming the worship on Sunday, the worship would move to 10:00AM with

a check in at 11:00AM. The children’s Zoom will also continue but may need to

be moved to a new time.

Outdoor worship will continue until it is too cold (both for our worship leaders, the

    congregants, and the piano)

The overall sense from congregants is one of patience. A few congregants are

comfortable and ready for indoor worship. Most are comfortable with our cur-

    rent worship plan.

Discussion was held on when things may resume a sense of normality, May is the

projected time for the virus to be better controlled and allow us to resume a

    sense of normality.

A reminder to our congregation, don’t let your guard down or grow weary of do-

    ing good for others.

Pastor Miller closed the meeting in prayer.

Council’s next check in will be Thursday, December 10, 2020 at 6:00PM on Zoom.

Past council minutes are available at anytime by contacting the church office.

CHRISTIAN SYMPATHY IS EXTENDED TO: Debbie Triplett upon the death of a dear friend, David Sink. David Julian Sink, 73, passed away peacefully on December 8 at Brookstone Retirement Center from Parkinson and dementia. There will be no public service at this time. David was a very dedicated member at Cotton Grove United Methodist Church, where he held many leadership positions and worked tirelessly to promote and assist with any project. He loved to sing and was the driving force of Sojourner, a contemporary Christian group in our area. David dairy-farmed with his father until 1986, then began a trucking busines to help farmers with their feed and supplements needs. Barrett Long and family upon the death of his grandmother who passed away due to COVID-19. Mary “Frances” Sink Beeker, 92 (93 on day of her funeral), of Lexington went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 17 at the Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington. Mrs. Beeker was a member of Reeds United Methodist Church and a loving mother, sister, and grandmother whose memory will be cherished forevermore. Her funeral service was held at Reeds United Methodist Church on December 20. Barrett is the husband of Danielle Leonard Long (daughter of Danny and Carol Leonard). Berry Odum upon the death of a very dear friend, Michael Brinkle. “Mike” passed away unexpectedly on Decem-ber 18 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem following a tragic vehicle accident. A graveside celebration of life was held December 26 in Sandy Creek Cemetery. Born and raised in the West Davidson area, Mike was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Left paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair after a tractor pulling accident in 1979, Mike realized that life should go on. He continued a successful tractor pulling career into the 1990s, making great friends and memories along the way. Mike was heavily involved in the local community and was always willing to lend a helping hand, touching and inspiring many lives. Berry writes about his friend: Michael “Mike” Brinkle is the epitome of Agape. I’ve known Mike for approximately 25 years and from my first conversation we hit it off right away - although we had little in common other than cars. Over the years and especially the past four to five I got to know a man that has impacted my life, how I live, how I react to life’s challenges, learned patience, learned what truly admiring and loving a friend like no other is like, respect, honor, duty, working through adversity - I can’t tell you what I’ve learned from Mike. What I love about Mike is his loyalty and dedication to his family, community, and church. His generosity to others - especially those in need - is not known by very many at all because only two would know - he and the person receiving his assistance. His helping others in need was never mentioned or boasted. Then there is the humor. Man can he cut up and keep things lively! The laughs and pranks we’ve pulled will always bring a smile to my face. I know God is present during our good times and during our struggles - trying to focus on that for peace helps but only time and his gifts left in us all will bring that...he will always be with us and this world has lost one of the most special people in the world; however, we have gained an angel that will forever look over us! Scott Eppinga and family upon the death of his father, Peter (Pieter) Eppinga. Peter, 92, passed away on Decem-ber 27, peacefully departing this life surrounded by his daughters at Henry Ford Hospital Macomb, Michi-gan. Peter was an identical twin; the twins had many years of enjoyment teasing people and playing their pranks on those unsuspecting. They were so identical, even their parents would often fail to tell them apart. Pete, a car-penter by trade, spent his life building and finishing homes as well as businesses in the greater Detroit metropoli-tan area. He enjoyed hunting, bowling and playing golf in his early years. Pete enjoyed spending time in his workshop at American House building airplanes, detailed birdhouses and Eiffel Towers. He was an avid fisher-man, and enjoyed traveling as well as singing with the Harmony United Detroit Chapter barbershop chorus, along with spending time with his family and friends. A celebration of Peter's life was held on January 2, at Knox Pres-byterian Church. Kenneth Michael Thomas (son of Betty Thomas) and family upon the death of his wife’s (Sherry) father, Eugene “Red” Johnson. Mr. Johnson, 88, passed away from bone cancer on January 3. His graveside service was held on January 7 at Bayboro Cemetery, and the family was served through Hardwick’s Funeral Home in Loris, SC. Mr. Johnson was retired military and served his country with courage, honor, and dignity in the United States Army as a part of the 82nd Airborne Division. He was of the Baptist faith.

Drive-In-Movie Traditionally on the second Sunday in December we hold our annual Christmas Dinner and Christmas Play presented by our church children. Due to the virus, this year we “celebrated” our togetherness instead through holding a drive-in movie in the church parking lot on December 13! The featured movie was a beautiful animated Christian movie, “The Star,” that was inspired by the Nativity of Jesus. Prior to the film, piped in music filled our parking lot as we watched photo clips from past Christmas plays. Thanks to: Amanda Hathcock for organizing and coordinating this awesome family event; to Joanna Deyton and Bleasha Carroll for our popcorn and refreshments; and to Jack Deyton and Joe Carroll for parking lot assistance!

OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS: Peter Schwartz, friend of LaVaughn Bartholomew, is recovering from COVID-19 and is need of our prayers. He had moved back to North Carolina because he is a nurse, and currently works at the Thomasville Medical Center. He was deathly ill, but is now on the mend. Please pray for Tracy Miller’s Aunt Judy and her family, as she continues her struggles with dementia. The family needs directions and answers for provisions for her care. We rejoice with Beth Huber upon results from recent tests. She has been declared cancer-free! She had her appendix removed and apparently all cancer was removed at that time. She will return for another scan in six months. Praise be!

THANKS! Prayer Shawl Ministry – Thanks to those who lead and participate in the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Completed prayer shawls are in the closet in the “Prayer Shawl Room”. Please feel free to pick up any that are needed, bless them and send them out. (Please notify Kelly so that he can note in our records.) Love Offering – Prior to outdoor worship on December 13, Carol Leonard, Chair of the Mutual Ministry Team, recognized our awesome First Lutheran Church staff and expressed words of appreciation for all that each does on behalf of our church family. A Love Offering from the congregation was then presented to Matthew Miller, Pastor; Amanda Hathcock, Congregational Life Director; Kelly Newsome, Parish Associate and Director of Music; and Bing SuCiao Milo, Sexton. Coat Ministry – Dalane Kitzman, a past physician volunteer in the clinic at the “Storehouse for Jesus” program, learned through the ministry’s newsletter that there was a tremendous need for coats. Thanks to Teena Walker, Out-reach Chair, for leading this project at First Lutheran Church. Thanks, too, to all those who brought in gently-used coats towards this effort. Teena was able to pack the church van full of coats and blankets, and delivered these to the ministry on December 7. The van was so full that it would have taken several trips by car to deliver the load! Advent Trimming – Thanks to Amanda Hathcock, Dan Huber, and Kelly Newsome for putting up the Chrismon tree in our sanctuary and for hanging wreaths. New Council Officers – At December’s Congregation Council meeting, the following individuals were elected to serve as officers for 2021: Tawn Bizzell, President; Melissa Morris, Vice President; Kevin Hathcock, Secretary; and James Whitaker, Treasurer. Thanks for being willing to serve!

OTHER NEWS AND TIDBITS New Home – We rejoice with Tim and Debbie Williams upon the completion of their new home! (See directory updates for their new email addresses. Their new home address is already in the updated directory.) On July 21, 2019, Tim and Debbie experienced a devastating house fire that destroyed their home. They have finally been able to move into their new home – just in time for Christmas! Ordination – Julie Laureen Tonnesen was ordained on Saturday, December 12 at Elon University. Pastor Tonnesen will serve as Associate Pastor at Macedonia, Burlington, and Campus Minister for LEAF at Elon Univer-sity. She represents three generations of pastors: Her father, Phil Tonnesen, was a good friend of Matthew Miller’s (they grew up together) and her grandfather was Matt’s mother’s pastor. Pastor Vernon Kinard, formerly serving at St. Luke’s Lutheran in Tyro, has been called as Associate Pastor at St. Mark’s in Mooresville. He began his new ministry on December 20.

Michelle Eppinga will be starting a new position with Novant Health on December 29 at Forsyth Medical Center. She will be working on a General Surgery Floor where she actually did her clinicals back in nursing school. Michelle comments, “I’m excited about the change. It was just amazing how when one door opened, it was bam, bam, bam and all the others opened faster than I ever could have imagined. Very thankful the man upstairs knew my heart’s longing.”

    Luminaria –

Thanks to all who purchased a luminary in honor of or in memory of loved ones. Our Christmas Eve worship on

    December 24 was beautiful!

    CONGRATULATIONS

Winner – A year ago, the Lexington Parks and Recreation Department inaugurated its “Light Up the Block” contest for the holidays. Second Avenue was voted the best lit block in town.

Pam and Jason live on this block and were thrilled when their block was voted “best lit” again! Pam and Jason’s house was voted “most original.” They decorated the trees in their yard with oversized Christ-mas balls - real balls: like kickballs and beach balls made to look like Christmas balls, and in various sizes.

It’s a stunning and clever display.

    Congratulations!
