January 3, 2014 An Epiphany Treat at Coffee Hour
January 6 is Epiphany, but Sunday January 12 will be the day we honorthe Magi who “traveled afar” to see the baby Jesus at Bethlehem. TheWelcoming Committee will serve King Cake at coffee hour after the 10:30service to celebrate this special day on the Church calendar.
The custom of the King Cake was brought from France to New Orleans inthe 1800s. It evolved from the Twelfth Night pastries made by those earlysettlers. The pastry (not really a cake) is shaped like a crown to represent thekings - the wise men of the East - who followed the star to the manger inBethlehem.
A dried bean was hidden inside the cake. Whoever found it received ayear of good luck and was treated as royalty. Later, a tiny plastic baby wasused to represent the baby Jesus . . because Twelfth Night is when the Magifound the “babe wrapped in swaddling clothes.”
One custom says that whoever gets the little baby must provide king cakefor the next party. Last year it was Cecile Jones who found the baby, but wewon’t hold her to that obligation! In fact, she had her golden plastic crowntaken back so it could be used this year . . Some luck!
The frostings or sugars decorating this symbolic dessert are: purple(royalty), green (the growth of the Church to the Gentiles - out to the worldbeyond the Jewish community), and gold (one of the precious gifts).
We Welcomers hope you come into the Parish Hall to enjoy this Epiphanytreat and perhaps find the little surprise inside.

The Blue Christmas/Longest Night service held as part of
the 5:30 pm worship on December 21st struck a chord with
about 35 in attendance. The service was designed for
people both from the St. Luke’s congregation and the
community suffering with pain, loss, isolation and grief in
the Advent season. The service included elements that
conveyed a sense of welcome, trust and understanding in
what can be a very painful time of the year. Music Director
Susan Pierson provided meditative music before and
during the service. The Blue Christmas service offered
special recognition of the struggles that many people face
while providing a safe place of rest, comfort and healing.
The following verse was used to close the service.
First Coming - after Madeleine L’Engle, in A Cry Like a Bell
God did not wait til the world was readytill men and nations were at peace. He came when the heavens were unsteady, and prisoners cried out for release.
He did not wait for the perfect time.He came when the need was deep and great. He dined with sinners in all their grime, turned water into wine.
He did not wait till hearts were pure.In joy He came to a tarnished world of sin and doubt. To a world like ours of anguished shame,God came, and His Light would not go out.
He came to a world which did not mesh,to heal its tangles, shield its scorn. In the mystery of Word made Fleshthe Maker of the stars was born
We cannot wait till the world is saneto raise our songs with joyful voice, for to share our grief and to touch our pain,He came with Love: Rejoice! Rejoice!
Mark your calendars forthe Shrove Tuesday Pan-
