Invest in Catalonia: LegalThe Royal-Decree Law 3/2014 introduces measures to encourage permanent contracting, including a major

reduction in the contributions made by companies in Social Security for permanent contracts signed between 25

February and 31 December 2014.

Flat rate €100 Social Security contribution

During the first 24 months of the contract Social Security contributions for common contingencies will be:

•€100 a month for full-time contracts.

•€75 a month for part-time contracts corresponding to 75% of a full-time contract.

•€50 a month for part-time contracts corresponding to 50% of a full-time contract.

Additional reductions for microcompanies

Companies with fewer than 10 workers at the time of signing the contract eligible for reduced contributions have

the right to a further reduction at the end of the 24-month period which is equal to 50% of the company Social

Security contribution for common contingencies for an additional 12 months.

General requirements for the reduced rate

This incentive is applicable to all companies that meet the following requirements:

•All tax and Social Security payments must be up to date.

•The indefinite contract must be maintained for a minimum of 36 months.

•The company must not have been found guilty of unfair dismissal for objective or disciplinary reasons or

collective dismissal. This requirement applied only to dismissals that occur after 25 February 2014.

Barcelona becomes "iCapital" of EuropeWith strong competition from Grenoble in France and Groningen in The Netherlands, this March the European Commission, via its panel of independent experts, finally named Catalonia’s capital, Barcelona, Europe’s most innovative city. The iCapital prize of €500,000 will be used to increase and expand Barcelona’s innovation programmes. This award analyses the competing cities and judges them on four basic parameters. They firstly must demonstrate their level of innovation in terms of concepts, processes and tools. Then they must show how they inspire others in order to attract talent, funding, investment and involvement. Thirdly, they must be integrated, demonstrating that they cover the entire innovation ecosystem in line with Europe’s 2020 innovation goals. Finally, they need to be interactive, in order to facilitate interaction between the different local innovation players. In the words of the European Commission, Barcelona won the coveted prize for its ability to introduce “the use of new technologies to bring the city closer to citizens”. Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, said: "Barcelona is a deserving winner of the first iCapital award, for its dedication to using new technology for the benefit of its inhabitants". What was especially relevant about Barcelona’s candidacy was the fact that in 2011 the City Council had launched “Barcelona as a people city” project aimed to introduce the use of new technologies as a way of boosting both economic growth and its citizen’s welfare. This wide-ranging innovation project covered open data initiatives, sustainable growth projects such as smart lighting and e-vehicles, social innovation, the fostering of synergies between relevant research centres, universities, private and public partners, and finally the use of ICT to improve the different “smart services” offered to citizens. In 2013 Catalonia exported industrial products to a value of €54,960m (2.2% more than in 2012). Of them 60% were products with high or medium high technological content. Exports of high technology products fell by 0.4%, medium technology content rose by 2.2% and medium low technology products rose by 1.1%. Products with low technological content grew by 3.8%.

Exports of consumer goods increased in 2013 from €19,999m to €20,698m while capital goods fell from €4,401m to €3,980m and total exports maintained the previous years’ levels.
