'londay, May 26.-St. Qoadratns, 125; St:Elen- therins, 192; St .Augustine 604; and St.Philip'Nerl, 1595, are the patrons of the day. The Rhododendroin, dedicated to St. Augustine and the Yellow Agalea, dedicated to St. Phillip Neri, are the floral emblems. St. Phillip Neri was born in Florence in 1515, and when a child became a recluse. He lived -to the age of 80; having died in 1595-his life having been de- voted to the amelioration of his race. Alban Butler says of him-"The divine love so much dilated the breast of our saint, that the gristle which joined the fourth and fifth ribs on the left side was'broken, whichaccideht allowed theheartand thelarge vressels more play." In 1550 he founded the congregation or religions orderof the Oratory, an order well known for the I strictness and severity of its religious exercises. On this day in 1851 a riot, in which many lives were lost, took place at Hoboken, N. J., between a party of Germans and "short boys," rowdies from New York. His wordse are to be found in hisworks ; which all should know too well to need quotation, for they are strong, clear, terse, and paint ideas with words, as the great Rembrandts of the world paint pictures with tile brush. The month has high honors, and has richly won them ; for its gentleness, its sweetnesss, its luxuriance of pleasant delightfulness, and that peculiar enjoy- ment which is only expressed by the strong old Saxon signification of dalliance. The month of sweet sing- ing birds, of low and gentle breezes, of light and life, when existence putson new charms, and everything, animate and inanimate, swims into glory and rejoicing. T•E OL LINE WHIo ME•ETING LAST NIolrr.-.Four- teenl Old Liners in Council.-This meeting, so long advertised to come off at Exchange Buildings last night, was very thinly attended. We learn from a gentleman who counted them, that there were only thirteen or fourteen persons present who could lay any claim to be called "Old Line W'higs "-the rest, twenty or thirty more-were American and Sag- Nioht Democrats. Col. Leroy Pope presided over the meeting, and John C. Farrington, Esq., acted as Secretary. A committee having been appointed to prepare resolo- tions for the action of the meeting, reported,in sub- stance, the resolutions of the late so-called Whig Con- vention of Kentucky. The meeting then adjourned. There was no speaking on the occasion-no rhetoric wasted-no enthusiasm, and no room for any. So ends in smoke, this ill-advised attempt to reor- ganize the Whig party for the ensuing campaign. Having the highest respectforthe gentlemen engaged in it, we can but offer them our sincere condolence on the occasion.-[Memphis Eagle, 18th. Concerning that which has transpired in the world'shistory on corresponding days in past years, withother aler pertinent ereto, prepared expreslyfor the readers of the Double Sheet Crescent.Blossoming in beauty the year marches onward to-

wards its perihelion. The birds sing.more sweetly, and the buds andblossoms shed a, fragrance aroundthe path of progress most refreshing to the wayfarer. All nature sings the o triumphe of advance, and men, unwilling as they may be to do so,take up the chan-son. We are all marching througha those eternalgates of which Mbrs. Osgood fittingly sang,"long timeago," despite our ignorance and in defiance of ourfolly. How beautifully Longfellow tells the story oflife:

"Art 1s lono oad life is fleelig,And oe,.h ets though stout hnd cbtre,

StUll like omteddrunms arebenting- Fmeral mnirehes t the grave."

'londay, May 26.-St. Qoadratns, 125; St:Elen-therins, 192; St .Augustine 604; and St.Philip'Nerl,1595, are the patrons of the day.

The Rhododendroin, dedicated to St. Augustine andthe Yellow Agalea, dedicated to St. Phillip Neri, arethe floral emblems.

St. Phillip Neri was born in Florence in 1515, andwhen a child became a recluse. He lived -to the ageof 80; having died in 1595-his life having been de-voted to the amelioration of his race. Alban Butlersays of him-"The divine love so much dilated thebreast of our saint, that the gristle which joined thefourth and fifth ribs on the left side was'broken, whichaccideht allowed theheartand thelarge vresselsmore play."

In 1550 he founded the congregation or religionsorder of the Oratory, an order well known for the

I strictness and severity of its religious exercises. On this day in 1851 a riot, in which many lives

were lost, took place at Hoboken, N. J., between aparty of Germans and "short boys," rowdies fromNew York.

Tuesday, lay 27.-St. Johln, Pope, 526; St. Bede,735; and St. Jilius about 302, are the religions pa-trons of the day.

So sang Spencer of J une-not lovingly, or tenderly. Our own American poet, Lowell, has done it betterjustico, and made it as resplendent, poetically, as itreally is. His wordse are to be found in his works ;which all should know too well to need quotation, forthey are strong, clear, terse, and paint ideas withwords, as the great Rembrandts of the world paintpictures with tile brush.

The month has high honors, and has richly wonthem ; for its gentleness, its sweetnesss, its luxurianceof pleasant delightfulness, and that peculiar enjoy-ment which is only expressed by the strong old Saxonsignification of dalliance. The month of sweet sing-ing birds, of low and gentle breezes, of light andlife, when existence puts on new charms, andeverything, animate and inanimate, swims into gloryand rejoicing.St. Justin, A. CoN•asIDE BLE FIns !-Below, says the Franklin(St. Mary) Journal, of the 22d, we'give a letter fromE. W. Fuller, Esq., describing a fish recently capturedat his saw mill, Chicot Pass. Not being sufficientlyconversant with the genealogy and character of thefinny tribe to solve the question at the close of thecommunication, we give pUnlicity to the letter, inorder that some one more leamed; upon the subject, may trace the genus or this remarkable fish, and en-lighten the public in the premises. This is no fishstory, but the facts, as given, are positively so. Mr.Fuller is a man of undoubted veracity, and a promi-nent citizep:

Mr. Editor-Dear sir: Yesterday my workmenhauled up into my saw mill a hollow log, in whichwe found a large fish, of the genus flibuster, judg-'ing fromhisequipments. T•E OL LINE WHIo ME•ETING LAST NIolrr.-.Four-teenl Old Liners in Council.-This meeting, so longadvertised to come off at Exchange Buildings lastnight, was very thinly attended. We learn from agentleman who counted them, that there were onlythirteen or fourteen persons present who could lay anyclaim to be called "Old Line W'higs "-the rest, twenty or thirty more-were American and Sag-Nioht Democrats.

Col. Leroy Pope presided over the meeting, andJohn C. Farrington, Esq., acted as Secretary. Acommittee having been appointed to prepare resolo-tions for the action of the meeting, reported, in sub-stance, the resolutions of the late so-called Whig Con-vention of Kentucky. The meeting then adjourned. There was no speaking on the occasion-no rhetoricwasted-no enthusiasm, and no room for any.

So ends in smoke, this ill-advised attempt to reor-ganize the Whig party for the ensuing campaign.Having the highest respectforthe gentlemen engagedin it, we can but offer them our sincere condolence onthe occasion.-[Memphis Eagle, 18th.

The river was $allingSaturday and yesterday morn-ing, but in the evening it appeared to be at a stand, from the effects of the continued and at times heavyrains, that had fallen during the previous forty-eighthours. In the danal there was seven feet three incheswater by the mark, and on the falls four feet two in-ches steamboat water.

The river was falling at Cincinnati, but on a standat Pittsburg Saturday, with, damp weather.

[Louisville Courier, l4th.

TaEWa•aTnE.-Cotton.-On Sunday and Mondayloast, the coldest weather ever known for the seasonwas experienced in this vicinity. We learn from theVicksburg Whig of the 20th, the cause. Says thatpaper: "We-had a wild storm of ain, wind. thim-der and lightning, late last Friday night, and judgingfrom the change in the temperature, we infer therewas an accompaniment of hail at no great distancefromh this city."

It isn now clear, dry, warm and somewhat dustyweather.

We have heard some complaint in Concordia Par-ish of lice on the cotton plant; hut to what extentthe injury is wecannot yet ascertain.

The vessels comprising the Massachusetts whalefleet are returning in rapid sccessien~and a majorityof the ships are welltiled. The ship E: I. lB. Jenneyarrived at New Bedford on Monday, after an absenceof four-and-a-half years, and has.on board 2,00 bar-rels of sperm.il one of the most valuable' cargoesever brought to that port. This ship left Pernam-buco, April 10, and reports that the cholera hadentirely ceased its ravages at that place.

Among certain tribes in Afican, thunder is called"the sky gun ;" the morning, "the day's child ;and one who is intoxicated is said to be " takecaptive by rum." A native of Africa, 'who visitedEngland a few years ago, when asked what ice was, said," Him be water fast asleep," and of the raildoadlocomotive he said, " Him be one thunder mill."

WHAT A WoeAN CAi'T HavE.-In these dsyawhen women distribute rifles, making speeches inpublic meetings, get up mobs and wear high boots, itis some consolation for mankind to know that thereare still a few pleasures left to his exclusive enjoy-ment. One ofthese is described by a highly poeticalyoung man in the'following rhapsody :.' She iay surpass man in the accomplishments,

and be called 'angel' but one attainment is beyondher efforts-unattainable, yet her Nemesis-ahe can'tshave l Never can she know thefelicity of that op-eration, nor the satisfactory sensation of havingshaved. Let her have here amorous haberdasher, and kids and perfumed curls, and sigh by intervalsshe can never know the suprem: eappines, the de-liciousutea of leaning back In tle soft, cushionedchah; bthe convenient rest for the feet, the snowyknapkinsabout the.throat, a fine white lather beintgently taken off, the eos touch of thermoer, the delica-cy ofthearer'os hand, the gentle titilation of the zig-omatical muscles; these are all feelihgs she'is ncces-sarily a stranger to. Women's right', conventionscannot reach the subject; they may wearthe breeches, fbut can't come the whiskerm.'

In short, she may always have a clean, beautifll
