Learning Session Descriptions Session 1 - 9:20-10:20 pm

Title: Leveling Up Your Accounting Classroom Room: Greenpoint Presenter: Joanne Fiore, VP – Professional Media and Academic and Student Engagement

Summary: Attendees will learn about the Accounting Program to Build the Profession (APBP), a national program that trains high school educators to teach higher order accounting, and the impact it is having on the accounting profession. Attendees will also learn about the AICPA’s award-winning Start Here, Go Places. website and gamified learning initiative “Bank On It.”

Title: EverFi – Blended Learning to Teach Business and Personal Finance Room: Williamsburg Presenter: Clark Hoefnagels, EverFi

Summary: With a world that is becoming increasingly digital, EverFi is embracing this trend by creating blended learning courses for students. EverFi's courses engage students with topics like the business cycle, investment options, budgeting and market research. The best part is EverFi's courses are provided at no cost to schools.

Title: Engaging Industry for Work-Based Learning Room: Salon C Presenter: Janina Morones, Academy of Finance and Enterprise

Summary: Industry Engagement is essential for a sustainable work-based learning program. This session will explore the strategies and tools needed to facilitate an environment of collaboration and communication that fosters success for all stakeholders.

Title: NationalGrid Room: Salon A Presenter: Cynthia Angulo, NationalGrid

Summary: Come learn about the existing STEM initiatives and Pipeline Programs that are available to students who are interested in working in the energy industry. Also, participants will engage in a discussion on how teachers and industry leaders can partner to provide the necessary tools for a successful transition from school to the workplace.

Title: 5 Tips for Teaching Social Media Marketing: Room: Greenpoint Presenter: James Letourneau, Stukent

Summary: Come learn how educators can keep up with the world of social media marketing. We will discuss industry experts to follow, current platforms that are relevant, curriculum and resources that are continuously updated, and a simulation for students to practice.

Title: Using Plickers in the Classroom Room: Williamsburg Presenter: Ida Marra, Brighton School District

Summary: Plickers is a powerfully simple tool that lets teachers collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for student devices. All that is needed is the teacher’s smartphone and Plicker cards. Use Plickers for quick checks to know whether your students are understanding big concepts. This is free and easy to use! Participants will leave with a set of Plicker cards.

Title: Technology: Igniting Student Interest Room: Salon C Presenter: Donna Shepardson, Columbia High School

Summary: Free and engaging hands-on technology websites, resources, and projects will be shared. Student interest will be ignited in Marketing, Career and Financial Management, Entrepreneurship, Business Math, Microsoft Word/Keyboarding, Career Exploration Internship Program, and Web-Page Design courses in the Business Education classroom. Attend and leave this session with a list of resources shared in a Google Drive Folder. Participants will also be encouraged to contribute to the shared folder. Boom!

Title: Business Simulations Room: Salon A Presenter: Matthew Shell, Business Development Manager, Capsim

Summary: Creating engaging learning environments with business simulations, Capsim develops simulations that bring business learning to life. Students put their knowledge to work in a simulated business environment all the while gaining insight into how functional area decisions in R&D, Marketing, Production, and Finance affect the company’s overall health and profitability. It’s fun and competitive and gets students learning by doing.

Title: Increasing Student Engagement Through NFTE Room: Salon B Presenters: Zvia Schoenberg, NFTE Lorena Izzo, Academy of Finance and Enterprise

Summary: Learn from a teacher and an alum how NFTE’s entrepreneurship courses use authentic, student-created businesses to teach entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial mindset.

Title: Project Based Learning in the Business Education Classroom Room: Greenpoint Presenter: Michael LaMastra, Hamilton Fulton Montgomery BOCES

Summary: This session will take a look at how interdisciplinary project-based learning is applied at HFM PTECH, a model school which simultaneously prepares students for their high school diploma and associate's degree. All instruction in all Regents classes as well as the business courses offered through College in the High School are taught 100 percent through interdisciplinary projects. Participants will leave with a better idea of how to moderate and structure project-based learning experiences for students in a model that can be applied to nearly all business classes.

Title: Building College & Career Readiness through Entrepreneurial and Work-based Learning Experiences in Middle School Room: Williamsburg Presenters: Iris Blanc and Nick Chapman, Virtual Enterprise International

Summary: This session will explore the VE-JV (Junior Ventures) Career Academy, an initiative urged by the NYC Schools Chancellor and supported by the NY Life Foundation to bring a new model for business and entrepreneurship education to middle schools. An in-school program augmented by after-school and extended learning opportunities, VE-JV supports students in developing academic, socio-emotional, and career-focused skills. VE-JV presents students with real-world, entrepreneurial challenges in a transformed environment equipped with essential technology. The program motivates students to achieve their best in school and helps them begin identifying college and career pathways that inspire a sense of purpose and passion.

Title: Career and Financial Management Curriculum Update: What You Need to Know! Room: Salon C Presenter: Marsha Iverson, CTE TAC Field Associate New York City and Yonkers

Summary: Career and Financial Management is a required semester course for all students in CTE programs. Business Educators often teach the course. The CFM curriculum can also be used for students with special needs pursuing a CDOS Credential. The New York State curriculum was created in 2003. A team of CTE educators, organized by BTANYS, recently re-wrote the curriculum. The Re-Write is available in draft form pending NYSED review. This session will provide the update—and highlight excellent, exciting, interactive ideas to deliver Career and Financial Management.

Title: Creating Tomorrow’s Leaders Room: Salon B Presenter: Lindsey Pollack, Keynote Speaker

Summary: How much do you know about your millennial students and colleagues? What motivates them? What discourages them? What kind of leaders will they be? In this essential program, New York Times best-selling author Lindsey Pollak helps you better understand your college or university’s millennials and provides actionable strategies to harness the power and potential of the largest generation in the workplace today. Attendees will: Discover the key preferences of millennials — and how to integrate these preferences with other generations’ preferences; hear about best practices at organizations that are successfully attracting and engaging top millennial talent; and learn tactical strategies for engaging, managing and training millennials.

2017

OUTSTANDING DECA ADVISOR AWARD

Janina Morones Academy of Finance and Enterprise High School

Janina Morones has been a business educator in the NYC Public School system for 12 years, 7 at the Academy of Finance and Enterprise in Long Island City. As the school Work Based Learning Coordinator, she assists the students in becoming College and Career Ready with organizations such as DECA, NAF, Virtual Enterprises International, Junior Achievement, and Pencil. Also as the programmer for AOFE, she has an important role in scheduling the school.

2017 OUTSTANDING FBLA ADVISOR AWARD

Mary Odell Carmel High School

Mary started the FBLA at Carmel High School 27 years ago and it is still growing today. It is the largest club at the school with 106 members and many state and national officers over the years. In 2016 Carmel won New York State for “Outstanding FBLA Chapter” and in 2017, placed second. Mary states “I am particularly proud of watching the students join FBLA their first year, having no clue what FBLA really is. When they are seniors, they are true “leaders.”

2017 CLINTON REED AWARD

Ida Marra Brighton School District

Ida Marra was an outstanding business teacher at Webster Thomas High School for 18 years where she held the positions of Teacher Leader, Young Entrepreneurs Academy manager and program instructor, and Work Based Learning Coordinator. In addition to these roles, she was also an FBLA advisor, a teacher representative and an instrumental contributor to the district’s strategic plan. For over 10 years, Ida served as a board member in her local professional association, MBEA, and for the Business Teachers Association of NYS. She is currently active on committees for NYSACTE and has accepted a new position to develop and grow the Work Based Learning program for the Brighton School District.

2017 INNOVATIONS GRANT

Vincent Tobias Flushing High School

Vincent Tobias is the CTE Director at Flushing High School Queens, NY. Vincent has developed a five-year technology plan for the school and oversees its implementation. Over the past three years, he has doubled the number of mobile computer carts with wireless printers in his school. He has also brought in partnership programs such as Girls Who Code, opened a Microsoft Certification Center, and has instituted an Adobe Suite certification program.

2015 JULIAN A. MILKES OUTSTANDING NEW BUSINESS EDUCATOR AWARD

Christopher Conway

Notre Dame High School

Christopher is a dual-certified business education and Students with Disabilities teacher. He teaches general education business courses, ICT classes with special education and college level business courses and is the local advisor for the FBLA Carmel High School Chapter and a member of the NYS FBLA Board of Trustee. His FBLA program goes beyond school to the Carmel community where students help those in need. Carmel FBLA students won NYS Outstanding Chapter of the Year in 2016.
