ST ATE M ENT O F PU R PO SE Pathways to Business and Careers is a one-semester course for students in grades 9-12. The course responds to the need for 21st Century citizens to become intelligent consumers in society in the face of technological advancements. Separately we assess students to gauge progress and inform instruction. Benchmark assessments for students in grades 9 through 12 are administered in the form of a midterm and final exam for full year courses. *Special Note: Only final exams are administered at the end of quarter courses and semester courses.

R A TIO N ALE Pathways to Business and Careers is a course designed to provide students with the knowledge to make intelligent decisions in their future regarding career choices and plans to be productive citizens of the United States of America. Students will study the various types of economic systems, principles of consumerism, Internet purchasing, criteria for career and college selection, business ethics, and current events. Students will develop an individual career plan, a detailed business plan, participate in various research projects, and use technology. Cooperative learning, Internet research and class discussions will be the primary methods of instruction. The course revision is aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards.

The students will:

TH E L I VI N G C U RR I C UL UM Curriculum guides are designed to be working documents. Teachers are encouraged to make notes in the margins. Written comments can serve as the basis for future revisions. In addition, the teachers and administrators are invited to discuss elements of the guides as implemented in the classroom and to work collaboratively to develop recommendations for curriculum reforms as needed.

A FFI R M A TI VE AC TI ON During the development of this course of study, particular attention was paid to material, which might discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, or creed. Every effort has been made to uphold both the letter and spirit of affirmative action mandates as applied to the content, the texts and the instruction inherent in this course.

MODIFICATIONS AND ADAPTATIONS For guidelines on how to modify and adapt curricula to best meet the needs of all students, instructional staff should refer to the Curriculum Modifications and Adaptations included as an Appendix in this curriculum. Instructional staff of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) must adhere to the recommended modifications outlined in each individual plan.

SAMPLE AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT

You are looking for a summer job. Your first task is to complete your resume and perform a job search on the Internet. Select a site such as Monster.com, post your resume on the site, and give a copy of your resume to your teacher. Print out the job referrals and an application for one or two jobs for which you would like to apply. Complete the job application and a cover letter and sent it to the prospective employer if your teacher has approved it. Finally, your teacher will set up a mock interview with a prospective employer.
