CURRICULUM DAY
Tuesday 4th October, Bryan Jeffrey will lead the
day on Mental Health and Well Being. This is a
student-free day.
ONE HUNDRED DAYS OF SCHOOL
CELEBRATION
What a magical world Ms Morgan,
Mrs Chi and Ms Butta created for
the students yesterday in their
classrooms. The colour, glitter,
decorations, table settings, balloons
and sparkling door hangings set the scene for what
was to follow….a party to remember! The teachers
were at school well into Tuesday night, determined
to make their rooms ready for a day of celebration
…celebrating the hundred days that Preps have
been at school.
The gasps of amazement and squeals of joy were a
treat to see. The students’ faces told it all, with
smiles as wide as the Grand Canyon and their
audible excitement filling the air.
I thank Ms Morgan, Mrs Chi and Ms Butta for their
determination to make this a very special day for
every Prep student. The financial cost and the time
to make everything perfect for the students was
most generous. Yet another example of teachers
going far beyond what could possibly be expected.
On behalf of your students and their parents I thank
you all.
I thank all the parents who so generously gave such
delicious and attractively decorated special party
food for the students. It was certainly a feast fit for
Royalty.
WHEN JOY IS GAINED FROM ANOTHER’S
PLEASURE!
LIONS CLUB AWARDS
Last Friday, Heidi P and Rachel N were presented
with a Lions Award by Mr Gerry van de Voorde
Heidi is an outstanding student who strives to
achieve in all areas of school life. She has made
wonderful progress in her first term of schooling
and has achieved excellent results in all areas. Heidi
is a kind and empathetic student who constantly
thinks of others. She is a wonderful and supportive
friend to all students and a great help to teachers.
Heidi is a committed and responsible member of the
Opal Dance Troupe.
Rachel always applies herself in class and
consistently produces very good work. She has a
positive attitude and can be relied upon to take on
extra responsibilities in the classroom and around
the school. Rachel has a compassionate nature and
is kind to all.
CONGRATULATIONS!
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP YOUR CHILD
AND TEACHERS
1 Be involved and give support. (Good for your
child to see you involved and helps
develop a positive relationship between
home and school)
2 Provide resources at home for learning.
Learning doesn’t stop at 3.30p.m.(Read to
your child every day. Borrow books from
the library; buy current child-interest-
based magazines)
3 Set a good example (show your child that
reading is enjoyable and useful. Monitor
ipad time; television; electronic games;
speak and act in a responsible and caring
manner at all times – your child watches
and learns from your actions)
4 Help your child be organised.(empty school
bags on arrival at home after school; have
special places for notices, lunchboxes and
mark the dates for special activities on a
calendar)
5 Encourage your child to do his/her best in
school. (Be pleased with their effort and
listen to what they are saying)
6 Let your child make mistakes.(Remember
what matters isn’t always the final result;
it’s letting a child have ownership of their
work/activity and learning along the way
and encouraging them to keep trying.)
7 Value education and seek a balance between
schoolwork and outside activities.(Help
develop your child’s skills and knowledge
so they can achieve in school and in life)
8 Recognise factors that take a toll on students’
classroom performance.(Make sure your
child has a balance between school
responsibilities and outside commitments)
9 Support school rules and goals.
10 Use pressure positively.(Encourage your child
to do his/her best, but don’t set the goals
too high or schedule hours of additional
work/activities)
11 Arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher if
you think there is a problem. (Don’t wait
until parent/teacher interviews or for
teachers to call you.)
12 Accept your responsibility as parents. (Teach
your child self-discipline and respect for
others at home – don’t rely on teachers
and schools to teach these basic
behaviours and attitudes.)
13 If teachers deserve praise, give it. (The
teachers at our school put much effort in
to their teaching and when someone takes
the time to let me know and to say “thank
you” this means a lot).
NATIONAL LITERACY AND NUMERACY
WEEK (week commencing 29th August) We will have plenty of exciting and
challenging literacy and numeracy
activities during the day and many
interesting activities that can be done
at home.
BOOK WEEK (part of Literacy and Numeracy Week)
As part of our celebrations for Children’s Book Week
and Literacy and Numeracy Week, we will be having
an incursion “Professor Maths” and a “Dress-up
Parade”
DEBATING COMPETITION I wish our Debating Team, comprising
nine students, all the very best as they
compete against other school teams in
the Debating Competition on Monday
1st August.
This is a wonderful opportunity for
students to learn the skills of debating. There will be
two opposing teams of three speakers each, with each
assigned a side (Affirmative – who argue in favour of
the topic) and Negative – who argue against it.
A topic is set for each debate and each speaker speaks
for a set period of time. Speakers alternate between
the teams, from First Affirmative through to Third
Negative. The skills of debating are formally broken
down into three categories and scores are assigned on
the basis of these categories
Matter (40%) – the logic and relevance of the
arguments
Manner (40%) – the style with which the
speaker presents him/herself.
Method (20%) – the structure and clarity of
the speech .
I thank Ms May for her organisation and
management of our School Debating Team.
GOOD LUCK!
2017 SCHOOL NUMBERS It is that time of year when schools are preparing for
the following year and student numbers are critical to
the school’s staffing structure. For many of you it
must seem very early in the year, but for schools it is
imperative that we have knowledge of numbers for
staffing and other resources.
I would ask you to please complete the required
Student Admission Enrolment Form if you intend to
enrol a new student at Burwood Heights Primary
School in 2017. This form is available from the main

by mail if requested.

In acknowledgement of Bastille Day, we have been enjoying some simple but
delicious French food this week. I’m sure any Michelin starred chef would sniff at
our simplified recipes for some classic dishes, but our dishes were full of flavour
and prepared in less than an hour! I hope you enjoy these chocolate pots as much
as we did.
5 Minute Pots de Crème
200g dark chocolate, in chunks
100 ml boiling water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
125 ml whipping cream
1. Melt the chocolate in a microwave or in a heatproof bowl over a pan of
barely simmering water, making sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water.
Take off the heat.
2. Add the hot water (you can use the water from the bain-marie) to the
chocolate and vanilla. The water must be added slowly and gradually to
avoid the chocolate splitting.
3. Add the whipping cream – the texture should be like that of crème
analgise. Pour straight into espresso cups and leave to set in a cool part
of the kitchen for at least 45 minutes before serving.
Note : We whipped the cream before adding it to the chocolate ( a happy accident
as it ensured our dessert was set).
