Jack Fannon’s Platform Hello folks!! My name is Jack Fannon, and I am running to continue to serve on the UVM Student Government Association Senate and on the SGA’s Committee on Legislative and Community Affairs (COLCA). I am currently a first-year student studying Economics and English, and I enjoy Nordic skiing, running and reading. My goals for the SGA next year include improving our relationship with the administration by working closely with it in areas where our interests overlap, but also staking out our independence and advocating for students and groups on campus when the bests interests of the student body are not in perfect unison with those of the administration. More tangible, though, are the goals and projects advanced by my committee, COLCA, which is the face of SGA in the Burlington community. We worked to bring together the Burlington community and the UVM community. My participation on COLCA and the Burlington community arranged for shared events such as coffee with councilors and candidates allowing city officials to come to campus to meet with UVM students. We also brought UVM to Burlington by attending community coalition meeting and Neighborhood Planning Assembly (NPA) meetings where our committee advocated for our student interests, especially around off-campus housing, a sometimes particularly contentious issue. Through these bodies and groups, I have built relationships with members of the UVM and Burlington communities that will continue to bear fruit for UVM students. I have worked with the NPA to organize events aimed at fostering relationships between students and long-term residents. I have also brought a student voice to the Ward 8 NPA planning commission meetings where I have helped budget NPA funding for FY 2020 and 2021. I think it is important to continue those efforts to build a stronger and more opening Burlington community for everyone. I would also like to bring the student voice to Montpelier and to state politics where the student voice is often overlooked. I think there is a lot of missed opportunity for us as students to advocate to Vermont lawmakers and I would like to be a part of that effort as well as others undertaken by COLCA through its mission to advocate for students beyond the walls of UVM. The order for next year is tall. We will be navigating a return to campus unlike any before, and with that will come a great deal of uncertainty. It will be our job as leaders to push for a more responsive administration that understands the needs of all students. I hope that you see me as being part of moving the interests of UVM students forward next year. Thank you for your support. If you have any questions about me or what I hope to accomplish on SGA, please feel free to reach out at [email protected]
