Fr. Mahoney’s Message
Burlington Catholic
Dear Burlington Catholic Collaborative,
We are coming close to the end of the Liturgical Year. The readings this weekend prepare us to think about end-times. In today’s Gospel the Destruction of the Temple is foretold along with the Signs of the End and the Coming Persecution. Jesus shares this information just prior to the events that will lead to his crucifixion. At first, the reading doesn’t sound that encouraging! Stones will collapse upon stones. Wars and insurrections will happen. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place. They will seize and persecute you. These things did happen! But Jesus reminds them and us that they will cause us to give testimony. Perseverance in the face of persecution will lead to salvation. Jesus is assuring his followers that God is present to all believers, even in times of trouble. As disciples of Jesus, we try to follow his example, trusting in God's mercy and protection, even when we are facing difficulties. “Not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” That is Good News!
Thanksgiving is right around the corner. We will participate in two “Thanksgiving Services” the last week of November. The first one will be an Inter Faith Service being help at the Temple Shalom Emeth at 16 Lexington Street on Monday evening, November 25. The other Thanksgiving Service will be Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. Margaret Parish being offered for our Collaborative. I am a firm believer that gratefulness is the heart of all prayer. Please come and offer your gratitude to the Lord at one or both of these Services.
As I announced last weekend in the bulletin and spoke to you at each of the Masses: The Joint Parish Council recommended to me a New Mass Schedule which I have accepted.
I am very proud of their work and I thank them. I have accepted the unanimous recommendation of the entire Joint Parish Council (about 30 members in total) to institute 6 Masses for the Collaborative beginning the first Weekend of the New Year, January 4/5, 2020. The ONLY change to the current Weekend Mass Schedule will be to create a New 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Margaret by combining St. Malachy’s 8:00 a.m. and St. Margaret’s 10:00 a.m. Masses. The rest of the Weekend Mass schedules for both parishes remain the same. The Mass Time Committee has prepared a 2 page summary of how they came to their recommendation as well as a plan for the future when we will have to go to a 5 Mass scenario should the need arise. That summary was inserted in last week’s bulletin and is available at the doors of the churches today. I have also accepted the unanimous recommendation of the entire Joint Parish Council to discontinue the 6:45 a.m. Daily Mass. The last 6:45 a.m. daily Mass will be celebrated on January 3, 2020. That having been said – we WILL re-institute the 6:45 a.m. Mass during the season of Lent and for Holy Days of Obligation. Thank you to everyone who gave words of support to me and the other priests and deacons after the announcement last weekend. Your support and cooperation shows your generosity of spirit and faith in the Lord.
The New Weekend Mass Schedule effective January 4/5, 2020:
Saturday, 4:00 PM – St. Malachy
Saturday, 4:30 PM – St. Margaret
Sunday, 7:30 AM – St. Margaret
Sunday, 9:00 AM – St. Margaret
Sunday, 10:30 AM – St. Malachy
Sunday, 12:00 PM – St. Margaret
Let us pray for each other. God bless, Father Mahoney

ST. MARGARET’S GIVING TREE in the spirit of “loving thy neighbor,” we welcome all to join us in our annual “Christmas Giving Tree” Project. The tree will be located in the sanctuary of the church through December 8. Your gifts this year will go to the following:
St. Margaret’s Parishioners Heartbeat
People Helping People of Burlington St. Ann’s Parish of Dorchester
Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Lynn
Over the last several years, by reaching out to many families and hundreds of children, a number of people had a happier holiday season due to the generosity of St. Margaret’s parishioners. Your kindness and support is greatly appreciated and needed once again this year. So, with this in mind, if you take a tag from the Giving Tree, please commit to following through. Make note of the person you have chosen and, if applicable, the age and desired request. Your gift should be a newly purchased item to avoid disappointing someone with a used gift. Please do not include additional gifts or candy along with your purchased gift. If you wish to give additional gifts please put them into a separate gift bag and indicate “additional gifts”. We will distribute them to the children as needed. Due to allergies that a child may have, please, no candy!
Gift Cards –– those choosing to give gift card(s), please deposit them into the decorated box located near the “Giving Tree”.
FINAL RETURN DATE: SUNDAY, DECEMBER 8
Bringing in gifts early avoids bad weather, forgetfulness, etc.
Please place all gifts under the tree in the Sanctuary. Any questions,
contact Joanne at 978-439-0017
God Bless and Thank You! Mass of Remembrance - at which we give recognition and offer prayers for those who died over the past year - will be offered on Sunday, November 24 at 10:30 am at St. Malachy’s Church.
During this Mass, a ‘Litany of the Deceased’ will be read that includes the names of those for whom Funeral Masses were offered in our collaborative this past year. Refreshments will be served after Mass.
ST. MALACHY YEAR END COLLECTION For the past few years we have implemented a year end offertory. This money has been used for snow removal, additional heating costs depending on our upcoming winter. Last week we sent a letter and a return envelope for the Year End Collection, if you did not receive this in the mail then you are not listed in our registration. Please contact the rectory at 781-272-5111 to register. These Year End envelopes are available at all entrances of the church. In advance, thank you for your generosity, your commitment and your faith in keeping Saint Malachy a thriving parish.
SAINT MALACHY GIVING TREE The trees are now up and ready for the picking. These trees will be decked out with Christmas tags for items needed by the following groups: People Helping People, The
Lowell Transitional Shelter and The Tewksbury Hospital. The gifts need to be back to St. Malachy’s no later than Sunday, December 8. Please look at the tag to see whether gift needs to be wrapped, only gifts that need to be wrapped will say so on the tag. Thank you in advance helping make someone’s Christmas a brighter day!
