Select Source…

My first trip to Colombia was in 2006. My Uncle lives in the middle of the Coffee

Region in the Manizales area. I was struck by the raw beauty and crazy steepness of

the hills and amazed by how the coffee can be cultivated and hand-picked on such

steep terrain in thin-air, high altitude conditions.

My fascination with the source of coffee grew as I explored the area (from Medellin

to Cali) by air, doing paragliding expeditions with pioneering, local pilots. Some of

these cross-country flights last in excess of 3hrs covering 50km+, flying wingtip to

wingtip with a great variety of local soaring birds. Cursing across the ranges and

often “out-landing” amongst coffee plantations,

I saw first-hand the pride that the local farmers took in their small area crops,

using every square inch of terrain to grow coffee, plantains, and sugar cane. They

would always invite me to try their best coffee, roasted on wood-fired stoves (using

the wood from the coffee plants themselves).

What struck me most was the immense variety of flavours that could change, even from

one valley to the next. Coffee absorbs its flavours from the soil and surrounding

environment (like wine). I became fascinated with the very personal process of

harvesting, fermenting, drying and roasting.

Boundless coffee today is a product of this experience.

We only work with farms that use organic, low environmental impact cultivation and

professional roasters right within the source region. Small batch, select harvest,

adventurous flavour that reflects the Boundless extreme sport philosophy.

Under the microscope:

• Boundless coffee is of the Arabica variety.

• Caffeine is a natural insecticide.

• Consistent rainfall means no irrigation.

• The high altitude of the farms prevents growth of fungi and mould

found at lower levels.

• Skins extracted onsite and used as crop fertilizer, no waste products.

• Year to year growth and fruit production reduces top soil loss and

increases biological carbon sequestration, in turn reducing waste run

off and waterway pollution.

• Farms are owned by the farmers and often in lots of only 1.5hectares.

• Boundless coffee is grown outside of rainforest zones.
