Bullseye glassFor Art and Architecture

I was recently assigned the task of writing one of Bullseyes online video lessons (back cover) on how to select an appropriate glass for kilnforming. As I waded through a list of material characteristics from compatibility to devit-resistance to stability on multiple firings, my personal experiences as a former student, teacher and maker kept pulling me away from glass and towards something else entirely. That something was Community. The students, artists, fabricators and teachers Ive relied upon over the years have always been at least as important as good material. Its no surprise then that as much as I love seeing new products Im most thrilled to see some old and new friends in the pages ahead. Where would we have been without pioneers like Klaus Moje (pg 7)? What would the future be without the youngest stars like April Surgent (pg 13)? What would Bullseye as a company be without internal talent like Stacy Smith (pg 45)? Or customers who push the scale and design heights of David Knox (15)? Or the energy and community involvement of teaching studios like Cincinnatis Brazee Street (pg 57)? Would we be experiencing the phenomenal growth of kiln-glass without the bonding and mutual support that come out of residencies like those led by artists Steve Klein and Richard Parrish at programs like Pilchuck and North Lands (pg 29)? I hope that as you use this catalog to search for glass, youll also think about finding your own artistic and technical community. Bullseye wouldnt be where it is today without the one thats grown up alongside us for over 30 years.

Bullseye Glass: What to ExpectCOLOR vARIATION While Bullseye strives for consistent colors, our glass is a handmade product and colors may vary slightly between production runs (and from images in this catalog). Some colors may change slightly upon repeated firing or with extensive heatwork. We recommend that you test samples of glass using the same firing cycles and processes to be used in finished pieces. COLORS ThAT STRIkE In order to provide the largest and most interesting palette of colors to kiln and torch workers, Bullseye produces some glasses that appear pale or colorless in the cold form but which strike or mature to target color upon firing. COmPATIBILITy Bullseye glasses are well known for reliable compatibility. But understanding the conditions of our factory testing is important, especially if you are firing glass under unusual or extreme conditions. At Bullseye, glasses known to be fairly stable are tested by firing to a top temperature of 1500F (815C) and soaking for 15 minutes before annealing. Once cooled, these tests are viewed for stress through polarized light and graded accordingly. Other glasses known to be less stable are fired three times with this cycle to insure good performance under typical multiple fusing and slumping conditions, such as those used in making a simple plate. If you are using a heat process that involves an extra-high temperature or an unusually long firing time, we recommend that you test the glass again, under the conditions specific to your project. For instance, imagine that you want to include some flameworked elements in a kilnformed project. Consider that flameworking takes glass to temperatures exceeding factory compatibility tests; also, the compatibility of some glasses is more sensitive than others to extensive work in the flame. Therefore, it will be important not to overwork your glass during flameworking and to test the flameworked components for compatibility using the full range of kilnforming processes planned for the finished project. Some processes that may not immediately appear to exceed the parameters of the test for compatibility actually do. Holding some glasses for long times at temperatures around 1400F (760C), which is in the devitrification range, can cause the glass to change dramatically. Many artists (Klaus Moje, for example) are able to push Bullseye glass to high temperatures for long times with exceptionally good results, but their success is insured by their own testing before making large or complex pieces. Testing is a wise practice with whatever glass you use. No manufacturer can guarantee glass to perform as expected under all imaginable working conditions. mORE QUESTIONS? See www.bullseyeglass.com for FAQ and performance characteristics of specific glasses.

Catalog illustrations indicate which styles differ in color from cold form to struck form. Keep in mind that struck color may vary depending on temperature, atmosphere and amount of heatwork. For example, heating Ruby Red Tint Striker (001824-0030-F) too rapidly during the initial stages of a firing cycle can prevent the glass from striking correctly, resulting in a blue-brown cast (sapphirine effect) instead of a true ruby red color.

Champagne bubbles are a typical feature of kilnformed art glass. For information on encouraging or minimizing bubbles in your work, see TechNotes 5: Volume & Bubble Control at bullseyeglass.com.

Bullseye truly got focused on producing glass for kilnforming in 1979 when the company founders met German artist Klaus Moje. At the time, Bullseye was mainly producing glass for stained glass makers. The team had done some work toward developing compatible glass but fully committed to the project only after meeting Moje and seeing his early fused pieces, which he made with glass color bars developed for the button industry. The work was breaking but it was amazing. Inspired, the team promised to deliver the artist a palette of colored glasses reliable for fusingand two years later, to Mojes surprise, the worlds first crate of Bullseye Compatible glasses arrived on his doorstep in Hamburg. Luckily for us, this artist is also a teacher. He went on to found the renowned Glass Workshop at Canberra Institute of Art in Australia, where for ten years he led classes and mentored artists and students initiating the incredible interest in kiln-glass you see in Australia today. BLACk & WhITE

French Vanilla 000137 For kilnforming and stained glass. Warm with amber tones. Upon firing, may strike to a bright dense white, depending on the kiln conditions. Great for experimenting. Use on edge to produce an organic striped pattern.

Opaline Striker 000403 a Even more ethereal than Translucent White (000243). Paradoxically, transmitted light is both softened and made more fiery, viewed through Opaline. Try layering with itself or with colors.

Reactive Cloud 000009 Reacts under kiln heat with some copper-bearing glasses and silver leaf and foil. Fired on its own, its whiteness is slightly bluer and more translucent than White (000113). Start getting reactions by reviewing the tips on page 25.

Clear & White Streaky 002130 For kilnforming and stained glass. Layer over any color to add pale wisps and tones while retaining some transparency.

White 000113 For kilnforming and stained glass. Transmits light in stained glass applications. More opaque after firing, but still transmits light.

Translucent White 000243 a For kilnforming. Perfect for fused lamp shades. Fires to an even white, more translucent than 000113. Not suitable for stained glass: cold sheet may have irregular white markings.

White Opaque 000013 For kilnforming and stained glass. Completely opaque before and after firing. Our brightest white.

Lacy White 000143 a For stained glass. Choose single rolled for pattern and maximum light transmission. Not designed for kilnforming: when fired, strikes to an even white with unpredictable density.

Black 000100 For kilnforming and stained glass. Opaque, glossy, classic black. Melts to a uniform surface.

Stiff Black 000101 For roll-ups and kilnforming. Holds shape well at blowing temperatures. Not as soft as Black (000100), and may behave differently in slumping than Black.

April SurgentNew talent, new methods, new mastery We first discovered April Surgents work in 2003 while she was still a student at the Canberra School of Art Glass Workshop. In the ensuing seven years, Surgent has been represented by Bullseye Gallery internationally. She has also participated in Bullseye Artist Exchanges, including one in which she teamed with the renowned Czech engraver and artist Ji Harcuba to further explore methods combining kilnwork with cameo engraving. Together the pair went on to share those methods with others via workshops at Pilchuck Glass School, the Bullseye Resource Center and North Lands Creative Glass. Surgents trajectory has been remarkable. Her first solo museum exhibition, April Surgent: Into the Surface, opened in October 2010 at Bellevue Art Museum in Washington. Structural integrity, visual complexity David Knox of Santa Clara, California, loves analyzing and working with light. After selling his Silicon Valley laser design company in 1998, he took an interest in glass fusing and started thinking about how to make walls, ceilings, floors and swimming pools come alive with color by manipulating light itself. When he founded Lightstreams Glass Tile, Knox thought that Bullseye was geared to make glass for individual artist works, but not for large-scale projects like his installations at hotels, resorts and private residences. Now he says, Bullseye has been reliable, very responsive to my needs, and has never caused a delay in our production. Lightstreams glass tiles installed at a private residence in Southern California. Billets

Easy to ship, easy to use, Bullseye Compatible glass for casting.

Why ChOOSE BULLSEyE fOR CASTING? Bullseye billets can be an excellent choice for anyone concerned about safety and working with lead crystal. Our billets are also significantly lighter than lead crystal and may be more economical to use. (In comparing costs, remember that full lead crystal glasses weigh as much as 45% more. The specific gravity of Bullseye glass is about 2.5.) Bullseye offers sheet glasses, frits and powders that can be combined with billets to achieve highly individual results. And our ever-expanding color selection is simply unsurpassed. Each Bullseye billet measures approximately 5 x 10 x 0.75 (127 x 254 x 19 mm) and weighs about 3.5 lb (1.6 kg). For projects requiring billets to have exactly matching colors, we suggest you request glasses produced from the same melt/date.

International ResidenciesArtists gathering to generate new ideas Growing the community, the quality of the work, and the depth of the work helps us all, said Steve Klein, who teamed up with Richard Parrish in 2010 to privately organize two group residencies cosponsored by Bullseye Glass. One took place at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State and the other at North Lands Creative Glass in Scotland. The artists worked individually on self-directed projects with the support of group critiques and were blown away (said Klein) by what they accomplished in the idyllic settings of these glass studios, far removed from normal routines and distractions. Rods

For your work at torch or kiln, drawn from Bullseye Compatible glass.

READING ThE COLOR SWATChES Rounded ends have been flameworked to indicate rods that strike. Some colors are shown on cores of French Vanilla wrapped in Clear. Darker transparent colors are presented on cores of Dense White. ROD GRADES Bullseye rods are graded as either F (recommended for both kilnwork and torchwork) or T (recommended for torchwork only). Since all Bullseye rods are recommended for torchwork, the F and T grades are relevant only to kilnworkers. On these pages, only T grade rods are marked *. Unmarked rods are F grade. ORDERING Rods may be purchased individually or by the pound or half pound (approximately eighteen to twenty rods per pound; fourteen per pound for lustres). For rod assortment packs see page 40.

Sample Sets & UpdatesCOLOR CONSISTENCy While Bullseye glass is widely known for consistency, it is a handmade product and slight variations from run to run are normal and expected. Our samples are selected to represent our middle range of surface color, texture and transmitted light qualities. Glasses ordered may vary slightly. In the case of glass styles that change appearance after firing, we choose samples as close as possible to the color achieved with a full fuse firing at the Bullseye Factory. Fired color may vary with firing cycles and kilns. This is especially true for striking glasses, which change color dramatically upon firing.
