Dear Parents and Community Members,

This week has been one of changes. I have been offered an opportunity to act in a position at Taabinga State School for Term 2 which I have

accepted. Given the short timeline, I haven’t been able to get around to everybody to say thank you and goodbye (at least for the short

term). I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to Peggy, our teachers, teacher aides, Deb, Janette and the P&C for their incredibly hard work

this term and commitment to always improving our school. Melanie McDonald from Charleville State School will be Acting Principal during

this time.

Melanie and I have discussed the next term’s events and she is excited about all of the wonderful things that will be happening. The Gover-

nor will be visiting on the 28th of May and the students will be performing for him. Very memorable! We also have the cross country which

will be on the same day as the Mother’s Day High Tea. More detail closer to the day. Deslie will continue to deliver our intervention program

and of course, students in Years 3 and 5 will sit the NAPLAN tests. I mentioned in a previous letter that we would be having an artist in resi-

dence for a few days in early June. In addition, our students will be working with renowned bush poet, Marco Gliori who will be in town for

our Queensland Day celebrations. To cap off a fantastic term, the upper years class will be embarking on their Sydney-Canberra trip. Many

thanks to our wonderful Council for approving our grant application which will ease the financial burden on parents.

You may also see some works happening around the school over the next term. Our facilities block will undergo a large renovation, the inter-

nal stairs will be improved, a cupboard under the stairs, a new sandpit and shade and we hope to hear about grant applications for shade.

Whew!

In the coming term, we are hoping to have a working bee as the weather cools. The focus of the working bee will be the NAIDOC shed. The

intention is to clean it out and set it up as a play area for the Kindy students. Kitsa has had a field day choosing equipment to furnish the

shed!

Please continue to bring in your old toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and the packaging from these products. Collection of these items may win us $60 000 in prizes for our school grounds. In addition, points are accumulated by voting for us, so please spread the word. To vote go to https://www.terracycle.com.au/en-AU/brigades/colgategarden You will receive a confirmation email once and can then vote daily with ease. It is important to do it daily and have friends and relatives do

the same. We are also collecting old shampoo and conditioner bottles, old make-up bottles, mascara tubes, eyeliner, lipsticks and lip gloss,

cleansers, in fact, anything beauty related. This will help reduce the amount going to landfill and contribute to our Student Council fundrais-

ing efforts. Just bring them up to the school.

The Bulloo Shire Council have set up a Magical Park on our school oval and on the Council oval. All you need to do now is to download the

Magical Park game from either Google Playstore or App Store. The device needs to have 4 hardware sensors: Accelerometer, Gyroscope,

Compass, GPS and about 1-2MB of data. If one of the hardware sensors is missing then you either won’t find the game on online or you will

get the message “device not compatible”. (About 90% of devices have the sensors we need to play).

When you start the game it will take you through everything including how to play. To verify that the park is active, go into the game and

after the completion of the tutorial you will see a map view. Your Park should show up with a marker either saying “TP” (Test Park) or a pink

marker. To play you need to be within 70m of the Park location. Only then will the portal on the map open.

The game has got a teleport feature that allows you to shift game content in the event that the GPS isn’t very accurate. It will prompt you to

use it if you seem to be too far away from the Park Centre but accompanied by a warning to only activate teleport in a safe area, I.e. the

Centre if the park. You can also teleport inside a game world. Click on the sleeping dragon and click on the icon with the House and the swirl.

Please also take advantage of the coding workshops which will be held in the library.

Finally, many thanks once again for your support. I wish everyone a peaceful and relaxing Easter break and a fulfilling Term 2.

Warm regards,

Anja

What an amazing start to the year! K-2 have been busy all term learning about emotions, their family histories and cultures and learning their French story, La Poule Maboule!

Over the term, students have worked through an emotions unit in English and Art, look-ing at the emotions represented in text, the words used to describe these emotions and how to identify theses emotions in themselves and others. The students presented their understandings of the texts and the emotions last week- these are now on Seesaw for you to view.

In HASS, K-2 have looked at our family tree, where our families come from and what we celebrate with our families. We have compared different cultures that are represented within our classroom and explored differ-ent cuisines, languages and family dynamics. We have compared the similarities and differences in these cul-tures and also looked at the different things that are celebrated.

Students from K-2 engaged in Harmony Day cooking and craft experiences and shared their reviews on the different cuisine we tried. This was a great way to consolidate the student learning and understanding of similarities and differ-ences in people and develop an understanding and toler-ance for differences in the world.

In French, the students have begun following directions and transitioning between activities in French, they are also singing songs, playing games and beginning to read the story, “Chicken Little” in French. Students can greet each other, ask simple questions such as, “How are you?” and “What is your name?” Next term, we should be able

to recite the whole book in French and work towards a production for families and the Governor.

Happy Easter from K-2! Have a safe and happy holiday!

See you all in Term 2!

Last week, Bonnie, Henry and Holly attended Multischool Camp in Longreach. They

stayed at the Agriculture College Campus where they attended classes and ended

each day with a fun activity such as a visit to the cinema, colour skirmish, movie

night, swimming, horsemanship performance and

more.

Jacinta attended a singing competition ‘Country

Music Crush’ in Oakey and won overall Junior and

Overall Performer out of all the competitors, in-

cluding adults.

The following terms will be exciting as Josh Arnold

(founder of Small Town Culture) wants to write and create a music video with the

Distance Education Students. Each student is allowed to film a snippet of what they

do at school, on weekends, hobbies, etc for the video.
