LIFELINES

For most industries, it’s the bottom line that really matters. Abortions represented over 51% of Planned Parenthood’s clinic income (even though they calculate abortion as a mere 3% of services provided). And we as taxpayers are providing most of the rest of their income, as 46.5 percent of their revenues ($487 million in 2010) come from government grants and Medicaid, Title X and similar funding. ~ Margaret H. (Peggy) Hartshorn, Ph.D., “Life Matters: Responding to Unplanned Pregnancy”, Respect Life Program 2012

HARVEST DINNER AT NEUMANN HALL A Harvest Dinner will be held at Neumann Hall, TODAY, Saturday, October 13th, from 5 to 7:30PM. THANK YOU ~ COLLECTION FOR CARE & EDUCATION OF PRIESTS Thank you to everyone for your generosity in last weekend’s collection for the Care & Education of Priests. The collection total was $ 478.69.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL SERVICES: Strengthening our commitment to social justice and to those in need.” The Diocesan Annual Appeal enables us to do our best to “serve” those living in poverty or those on the margins of society. Through your generosity, we can keep our soup kitchens and shelters open. Thousands of meals are served daily at St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, Scranton, St. Anthony’s Kitchen, Williamsport and St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, Wilkes-Barre. St. Anthony’s Haven, Scranton, provides a temporary refuge for those who have no place to call home. At Nativity Place, families in crisis find emergency housing. With your assistance, Catholic Social Services provide programs that help the most vulnerable in our midst.

NOTE: In consultation with Msgr. Joseph Kelly, Diocesan Secretary for Catholic Human Services and Executive Director, Catholic Social Services, it has been determined that the second collection historically taken up during the Fourth Sunday of Lent for Catholic Social Services be eliminated. Therefore, any donation parishioners usually made at Masses during the CSS Lenten collection in years past should now be included within their Annual Appeal donation. St. Brigid Parish Appeal Goal this year is $ 23,750.00 a decrease of $ 1,250.00 from last year.

OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF THE ROSARY The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, one of the best known of all Catholic devotions. The best way to celebrate the month is to pray the Rosary. This being said, we are looking for volunteers, both men and women, to pray the Rosary in its entirety at the 4:30PM Mass at St. Francis on Saturday, and the 8:00AM Mass at St. Francis on Sunday. (The Rosary is already said in its entirety at St. Augustine each Sunday.) Sign-up sheets are in the back of St. Francis Church. There are only (4) Masses left after this weekend, please help us out by signing up for one of them! Rosary should begin 25 minutes before Mass is due to start.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIOCESAN COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN The Scranton Diocesan Council of Catholic Women will conduct their 50th Annual General Assembly on Saturday, October 20, 2012. The event will be held at the Oblates of St. Joseph Seminary, Route 315, Pittston, PA. Registration will begin at 12 Noon followed by Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament and a prayer service. A meeting will be conducted at the conclusion of the service and refreshments will be served. All women from the Diocese are invited to attend. If you have questions, please call Linda Malinoski (570-840-7124). “Priesthood Sunday” will be celebrated on October 28th. This day provides an opportunity for Catholic parishioners to thank their priest for following a call to a religious vocation, affirm their guidance and lift him up in prayer to help build a positive working relationship for the future of our church. Please pray especially for our priests and those in religious life.

MOM’S HOUSE “SOLUTION OF HOPE BANQUET” Mom’s House “Solution of Hope Banquet” will be held on Thursday, October 25th, to commemorate 24 years of helping low income, single parents complete their education. RELEASE DATE: “THE VOICE OF JOHN” Executive Producers of River-Song-Productions. Inc. announced the release date for The Voice of John. Slated for national release November 4th of this year. This compelling documentary will take you deep into the heart of issues facing our country for over forty years. A multitude of national figures such as National Right to Life president Carol Tobias, former Governor Mike Huckabee, Dr. Alveda King, evangelist Perry Stone, Father Frank Pavone, Creation Museum CEO Ken Ham, Bill Baird, founder of the Pro-Choice League, as well as some of the most brilliant medical, political and philosophical minds of our time, weigh in on the most controversial issues of our time. Whether you are Pro-Life or Pro-Choice, Christian, Jew or Atheist, Liberal or Conservative, this film will illuminate the questions many were afraid to ask and compel you to ask yourself, what do I truly believe? Some may not have an opinion, but they will after they view this film. Does God exist, or is this all there is to this life? When does life begin? Who decides? What roll does or should the government play if any? Is society and our government trying to control who lives and who dies regardless of age? Come view the facts and decide for yourself. We guarantee one thing; you may never think of these topics the same, ever again! www.river-song-productions.org or www.vocieofjohn.org.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT “We the faithful of the Roman Catholic Community of St. Brigid Parish, (St. Francis Xavier and St. Augustine Churches), in union with our Holy Father, the Pope, and the Diocese of Scranton, are called through baptism to share in the mission which Jesus Christ has entrusted to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We in this Faith Community, under the leadership of our Bishop and our Pastor, cooperate to proclaim the Gospel in accordance with the teaching of the Church, to celebrate the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, for the salvation of all, and to witness by grace to the Kingdom of God so as to promote a culture of life, justice and peace. We especially endeavor to foster spiritual growth and evangelization in our present and future generations by drawing parish members back to active participation.”
