BYTHE WAY ...

• The Time Has Come! - This week, Wednesday through Saturday, we celebrate our 37th Annual Saint Anthony's Feast with all the food, rides, games, fellowship, fun and zeppoli for which The Feast has become famous over the last four decades.

The Feast is a wonderful reflection on today's solemnity - Pentecost, the outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the early Church. The Feast requires a large number of different talents and gifts- announcers, construction men, cookers, corn huskers, electricians, fryers, dishwashers, 50-50 hawkers, food runners, game operators, maintenance people, money counters, ticket sellers, zeppoli preparers- and a myriad of other job descriptions, all working together to create a whole experience. In the same way the Holy Spirit brings all our many gifts together to form The Church.

As I am constantly reminded, what we do this week is not about the money. It's about being together. Come to The Feast!

• This past Friday evening, Saint Anthony's School saw its 105th Graduating Class walk down the aisle to Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance. Congratulations to all our graduates, to their parents and families who have made so many sacrifices to give their children a sound faith-based education at Saint Anthony's School, and to all the faculty and staff at the school who have worked so hard to help provide that education.

The Graduation gives me the opportunity to express my own thanks and that of the whole parish to Sister Emy DeFilippi, F.M.A. who is leaving the post of Principal in order to take up new duties at Mary, Help of Christians Academy in North Haledon. Sister Emy has boundless energy and optimism, has an obsessive love of cleanliness, and a genuine zeal for young people in the finest Salesian tradition. In addition to all that, she bakes a mean cherry pie! She has been a good friend to have around these past two years, and I will miss her. Another Salesian Sister, Sister Colleen Clare, F.M.A. will be coming to Saint Anthony's to take Sister Emy's place, and we welcome her as well.

• On Saturday, June 24, the Solemnity of Saint John the Baptist, Bishop Serratelli will re-dedicate the Cathedral of Saint john the Baptist in Paterson. The cathedral has been closed for six years since a portion of the ceiling collapsed in 2011. I myself did not realize how long the Cathedral has been closed until Father Roberto and Dailon mentioned to me that they have never been inside the building!

The Cathedral was built in 1865-1870 during the pastorate ofthe legendary Dean William McNulty who served as Saint John's pastor from 1865 until his death in 1922. One of the interesting developments in the Cathedral re-dedication is the fact that five of Dean McNulty's descendants are coming from Ireland for the ceremony.

• Congratulations, Father Roberto - Back in February, over dinner one night, Father Roberto and I had a discussion about the process of indicating to the Personnel Director a willingness to become a pastor. I explained to him how the process worked and what he should do, and then we waited.

There are four pastors retiring this Spring in the Paterson Diocese. One of them is my classmate, Father Dan Murphy, at Saint Matthew the Apostle Parish in Randolph. Several weeks ago, Bishop Serratelli contacted Father Sean McDonnell, the pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Whippany (while in Ireland!), and asked him to replace Father Murphy in Randolph. Once Bishop had his agreement, he then called Father Roberto and named him Administrator (and eventually Pastor) of Our Lady of Mercy.

The Whippany Parish is one of our oldest. The original church (still in use today) was built in 1854. Oddly enough, Father Roberto is the third St. Anthony's parochial vicar to become pastor of Whippany. Father Michael Zarrillo left Saint Anthony's for Whippany in 1941; and Father John DeMattia,

a former Saint Anthony's associate, became pastor of Whippany in 1980. Father Roberto's new assignment will take effect on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, June 29. We will all have the opportunity to thank him for his six years of ministry at Saint Anthony's and to wish him well at a reception after the 10:00 A.M. Mass on Sunday, June 25.

Beginning with Father John McKenna in 1935, Father Roberto is the 18th in a line of newly-ordained priests who began their priestly careers at Saint Anthony's. As he goes to Whippany I know he will take a lot from his experience of all of us with him. Congratulations, Father Roberto! The people of Whippany are very lucky.

Pray for good weather. See you at The Feast!

Pentecost Sunday First Reading: Acts 2:1-11 On the feast of Pentecost, the disciples were gathered together when suddenly tongues of fire rested upon them, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to speak in many tongues; those who heard them were filled with amazement. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 Paul tells the Corinthians that each possess-es different gifts and performs different ministries, but each works for the common good in Christ Jesus. Gospel: John 20:19-23 Jesus appears to the apostles after his resur-rection and bestows upon them the power to forgive sins.

STEWARDSHIP AWAKENING: SHARING FAITH, SUPPORTING GROWTH

Thank you for answering the call of Stewardship Awakening! The results confirm our commitment as the Parish Community of St. Anthony and our desire to continue our mission. I am grateful to each of you for your offering, but this is more about our concern for each other and our parish. You have helped each other through your collective sacrifice. As we share our faith we must now implement the appropriate actions to support growth and build our parish for the next generation.

Our results are encouraging, close to 30% of the parishioners who gave to the Sunday offertory in the last year made a commitment for the new year. For those of you who responded with your prayers and notes of already sacrificing to maintain your current commitment, we thank you also. We hope you are also inspired to continue to embrace our Stewardship Model of giving your time, talent and treasure for the benefit of others. Here is a brief summary of the results from our Stewardship Awakening program:

Percentage of Responding Parishioners % Increase in Offering*

33 % 41% - 100%

30 % 21% - 40%

37 % 1% - 20%

*Increases range from $1 to $55 per week.

Your response to the Stewardship Awakening program has had the following impact on our weekly collections:

Average Weekly Offertory March 2017 $13,532

Average Weekly Offertory April/May 2017 $13,224

Average Weekly Offertory 2016 $11,975

In just a few weeks we will celebrate our annual Saint Anthony’s Feast. In many ways the Feast is the tip of an iceberg. It is the coming together in a joyful and faith-filled way of all we live and believe, share and serve, worship and praise as a parish community of faith all through the year. Thank you for the ongoing contribution of your time, talent and treasure to Almighty God and each other at St. Anthony’s.
