Junior Development

Further to that, the 11/12 boys side have contributed a lot to the men’s senior sides already, with nearly all of one team playing in a senior game on top of their junior commitments last week. It’s a credit to the coaches, parents, players and junior co-ordinators that our boys are already competing at a senior level. Well done!

The club plans to undertake further sessions with other junior teams during the season.

Junior Umpiring Program

Hockey WA will be piloting a junior umpire program through the 2011 season with the objective to progress umpires through a three to five year cycle and produce quality umpires who have the ambition to progress to national and international competition.

The first step in this process is to identify umpires with potential and/or the desire to officiate regularly. Hockey WA Umpire Coaches Ian Pitt and Graham Napier will be visiting the junior venues outlined below throughout May to identify umpires to be involved in this program.

Ian Pitt is a Level Three Umpire Coach who has played, umpired and officiated at International Level whilst Graham Napier, a Level Two Umpire Coach is our highest ranking Technical Officer and has been involved in numerous national and international events and is also an experienced umpire coach at the local level.

The venues being visited over the next three weekends are:

Saturday 14 May Perry Lakes Reserve (fixture code YMCC)

Saturday 21 May Fletcher Park (fixture code VP)

Saturday 28 May Richardson Park (fixture code WASP)

Clubs are encouraged to nominate umpires aged between 14-18 years old who they think should be considered for the program and who will be umpiring during one of the above times.

There is also the opportunity for clubs to put forward umpires who are not umpiring at the above times for consideration.

Any juniors interested in participating in this program please email me and let me know so I can nominate you. Email: [email protected]

The J5/6A Grade team were welcomed to be part of the senior men’s team game on the weekend. The kids joined in the pre-match fitness and hockey warm up with the senior players and then watched the game. The kids were rewarded with a drink and ice cream. Unfortunately despite a good performance from the team dominating the opposition the score remained 0-0. Hopefully the kids gained some knowledge and understanding of the game from the best players in our club. I’m sure the players also got enjoyment from being involved and helping the kids.

Thanks to Ryan Marlow – coach as well as the parents and most

importantly the kids in the J5/6A grade team. For more images,

Round 3 Melville 4 – Joondalup Lakers 1 7th May 2011 at Melville Turf

This week’s game was an away game at Morris Buzacott Reserve in Melville’s ground so it was a bit of a drive for some of the girls. The game started at 4pm, and with the afternoon sun, was quite hot for most of the game.

We had a great start to the afternoon, with everyone being well on time and having a fantastic warm up, we again had one sub on the bench. After having such a great warm up, it wasn’t the best start to the game for us, with Melville scoring a goal within the first minute of the game, and then a second goal within the first 5mins. It seemed a bit like déjà vu and we could have had a repeat game of last week with everything going downhill from there, but this time something was different. Whether it was something to do with the warm up or not, we had a fight and drive in us, and we didn’t give up we kept going strong even though we were 2-0 down in the first 5mins. Melville were driving hard at us with a few very fast players that would get breaks into the ‘D’ and waste no time at getting a shot away at the goal. Which saw them scoring a third goal against us.

We were doing well ourselves though, managing to clear the ball just as fast and head back up to the other end of the turf. Brigitte Freese was doing a fantastic job of being on the right wing and always in an open spot, this lead to us having many breaks up the side and into their ‘D’. It was a fantastic feeling for us during this game as we managed to get at least five short corners throughout the duration of the game. Something that we hadn’t been succeeding very well in our previous two games.

We managed to get a short corner right as the half time whistle was blown, and with some great teamwork and a fantastic hit from Dominique du Plessis we managed to score our first goal of the season. This on its own was a mini victory for us as a team, and we ended the first half on a fantastic high with more determination to get another on the board.

We kept up our strength and attack all throughout the second half, as did Melville. Unfortunately they managed to get a few quicker shots at goal away scoring their final goal against us. We still kept our heads up and the determination was not lost right up til the final whistle. This was great to see from us as a team, and there was some outstanding hockey played by all of us this weekend. It was an exhausting but successful game for us as a team.

Round 3

NC Raiders 3 – Joondalup Lakers 6

7th May 2011 at PHS-1

After having won last week against last year’s premiers the boys were anticipating the match against NC Raiders

and looking forward to the game on Perth Hockey Stadium's Number 1 turf (the only match we get there all year

until finals). The team talk revolved around us, we knew that we were the favourites going into the match and

that we needed to create opportunities to score and back up the odds. The warm up was okay however it lacked

a bit when we touched the turf, everyone seemed a bit flat and there wasn’t much talk, it took a while to get

going in the warm up and we probably aren’t as accustomed to getting wet by sprinklers as other clubs...

Anyway we hit the turf and started with a real vigour, turning up the heat and scoring an early goal thanks to a

brilliant running shot from Ali Roberts (Collins Obuya) who converted from a tight angle. Raiders seemed to lift

for a few minutes and held onto the ball for the next part of the game quite well, however our chances kept

presenting themselves and we ended up scoring again, this time from some great linked passing and a finish

from Joel Sargent (Bjorn Borg). From there we lifted and pressed again getting a short corner. Whilst the push

out wasn’t straight Ian Colan (Rabbit) took the trap and shot a mistrapped goal from the defender.

Halftime score 3-0 to Lakers.

Halftime talk consisted of us telling each other to build the play up together more rather than attack in ones or

twos, especially from long corners and bad angles (rather than hitting into the D).

Start of second half and we really wanted to press for some more goals, we pushed hard and within a few

minutes had a couple short corners. One of these was converted by Collins Obuya with a drag flick high above

the dropped keepers defence. Raiders were not to be outdone however and pushed for their first goal of the

match with some smart overheads. The rest of the second half moved on with a goal from good constructed

play and an excellent pass from Tom Wallace (Tommy), followed by another great piece of leading by Tommy

onto the post where Andre Gabriel pinpointed a pass hit onto his deflecting stick and past the keepers left boot.

At this point with 10 minutes to go and 6-1 up we really should have pushed for more in the last part of the

match, but either due to us pushing too much or the Raiders use of overheads they converted two more into

goals and finished with some positive out of the game. For us it seemed slightly negative and it was a struggle to

be happy with just the 3 points and a 3 goal win after letting them come back, however this is probably a good

thing as it shows we know what we are capable of doing and what we need to work at as we want to continue

being the team to beat for 2011.

Round 4

Joondalup Lakers 0 – Harlequins 0

15th May 2011 at Arena

On Sunday the 15th may we were set to play Harlequins HC.

With a win today we would go top of table with a game in hand,

setting us up in a commanding position. We came out with a

good intensity and played most of the 1st half in our attacking

half. Harlies made it into our defensive half on very few

occasions but the attack quickly fizzled out. Even with all the

possession we had in the first half we were unable to convert.

The first half ended at 0-0.

The second half started much like we finished the first with most

of the game being played in our attacking half. The Harlies

goalkeeper put in some good saves to deny us multiple times

and their defence was looking solid, with the majority of their team holding behind the ball. With the amount of

corners and possession Lakers were getting surely a goal wasn’t too far away. Unfortunately this was not the

case and the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

We’re now looking forward to another challenge, facing newly promoted Newman Knight on Sunday.

Round 3

NC Raiders 0 –Joondalup Lakers 2

7th May 2011 at PHS-2

The 2’s finally put together some half decent hockey this week. We came up against a Raiders team that had mixture of youth and experience, Fast little buggers. Our own youth brought their A game which was a delight to see. We were under the pump for the first 5 minutes until we woke up and realized the game had started, then once awake the scales turned and we controlled the match for the majority. The work rate from the team as a whole was commendable, we had no passengers and were unlucky not to slot a few more. A special mention must go to Jordan, Armayne & John Bates who all stood up and shined in the first hard 2’s match.

Bring on Blades next week and with so many games back to back on Sunday hopefully the support will be HUGE.

Until next week

Round 4

Joondalup Lakers 2 – Blades 3

15th May 2011 at Arena Joondalup

We started out well and for the first 5 minutes had many opportunities, should have been 2 to 3 up, but none the less it

was Blades who started the scoring with a rocket hit from a short corner.(Leigh’s foot is still sore apparently). We

responded immediately after and went to the main break at 1 all. After a small amount of discussion about not using the

middle so much and passing wide, we came out and dominated the first ten minutes in the second half and a score was

added, in the lead we started to lax, talking slowed down, second efforts slowed down and needless to say Blades scored a

goal. From there the game turned into a scrappy end to end game and Blades scored once more. All in all that game will set

the benchmark for the two’s this year and that said I believe we can play well above it.

Praise must go to the young ones again who are improving each week.

The game wasn’t all bad plenty of positives to take from it. Once again, WATCH THIS SPACE.

We have now finished round four and the women's twos team have won two games and lost two games. We beat Dale 4-3, Lost to Newman 2-0 (a game we could have won), Lost to Wasps in a very close 2-1 and beat Canning 2-0 dominating virtually the whole game. Our twos players are developing very strong teamwork and team mate work levels , not seen in our second team for many years and it shows in the results. At half time the talk is always positive, supportive and I can hardly get a word in. The work rate at training is terrific and I hope it continues as we have a few tough games coming up against teams in the top four.

J5/6 Grading Carnival: Hundreds of children, and cars, descended on Yokine oval on a crisp Saturday morning where teams spent the morning playing some good hockey. Congratulations must go to all our J5/6 players and their hardworking coaches for a wonderful day, showing good team spirit and being the best club there! Lakers is proud to announce that the J5/6 Green Boys team achieved an A grade spot in the league – something the team has been working hard to achieve! Lakers also retained a J5/6B grade for the boys and the girls, as well as a J5/6 Regional grade for the girls.

Junior Hockey: Our teams are going from strength to strength already and it’s great to see everyone so hard at work during training sessions. There have been some loses but, from all accounts the teams still performed well, showing tenacity and determination. Some of our teams still need an extra player or two – J9/10 girls & J7/8 boys. If you know someone in these year groups, encourage them to join us. Please remember that training at Iluka (BSA) takes place even when it’s raining. If it is too wet the team will move inside and do a ‘board talk’ with the coach so it is important for all players to be there. The training may finish earlier so confirm with the coach when dropping your child off. Congratulations to Dane Gavranich (J5/6A Boys) who has successfully made the U12 WA State School Hockey Team!

Supporting the BSA: We have been allocated many games at our home grounds, Iluka, on Saturdays and ask that parents support the club by making use of the BSA. We have asked for a coffee machine to be installed for those cold, early morning games! Remember to have your orange Social Member tag with you when buying at the bar. On a Friday night from 5pm to 6:30pm the Hin2H group is holding a regular sausage sizzle – come and join us for ‘Happy Hour’!

Senior Games: The young players will learn so much by watching the seniors play their matches. The Arena Turf and BSA is where our home games are played on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon. If you have some time over the weekend, spend an hour supporting our club and our senior players, with your child, watching some hockey at the Arena. The senior fixtures for the Arena and BSA are on our website.

Hin2H: What an amazing start it’s been to our season!! We are fast approaching 90 players, ranging from Kindy to Year 4 and want to welcome all new members to the program. It was also great to see so many familiar faces from last year back again and keen to learn! On Friday the hockey packs were distributed and more have to now be ordered due to all the new registrations – this may take another 2 weeks so your patience is requested. This week we are hoping to set up the teams and hand out the new club t-shirts to each team.

We also held a Sausage Sizzle afterwards and a big thank you must go to the parents who so willingly volunteered to set it up and get it running. To make it fair on everyone we are asking for volunteers to contact Candice Myers, who has offered to draw up a roster, to enable us to make this a regular event.
