Theatre Three ~ BEAU JEST
BEAU JEST tells the story of charming but pressured Sarah Goldman who doesn’t think her traditional parents will respond favorably to her dating a guy named Chris Kringle. So what’s a nice Jewish girl to do but create a fictional Jewish doctor and hire an out-of-work actor to play him? The masquerade works flawlessly for a time, but comic situations and further complications bring irrevocable changes to all their lives. Hilarious and quite moving, BEAU JEST is a delightful romantic comedy.

Special Torah readings are added to our regular weekly readings in preparation for Passover. Shabbat Parah marks the beginning of the formal preparation for Pesach and we read a passage about ritual of purification involving a red heifer. On Shabbat HaChodesh, establishment of the Hebrew calendar is discussed, with Nisan being the month from which other months are counted (but the year number changes in Tishrei). Shabbat HaGadol falls on the Shabbat before Passover, celebrating the original Passover in Egypt.

Go to the Israel Day Parade With NSJC!
Join us at the Celebrate Israel Parade! The price should be affordable. It will only take an hour or two to get there. And you will be in a world where it seems like everyone is Jewish. This isn’t our synagogue trip to Israel (you should go on that, too) but our planned participation in the Celebrate Israel Day Parade. This year it takes place on Sunday, June 5th, between 11am - 4pm on 5th Avenue. The 2016 theme is: “Israel: Sight, Sound, and Spirit.” I really want to encourage our involvement in this important event that shows our pride in and love for Israel. The event is always great fun and very meaningful, too. Details of our participation will be available soon. We are looking to do something through the Religious School and hope to offer the congregation options for taking a bus, buying a group t-shirt and any other details necessary to make it possible to have great participation. So your first job is to mark down Sunday, June 5th on your calendar – you’re going to be busy. I’ll see you in New York City.

Rabbi Benson is also empowered to lease all places wherein the chametz owned by me may be found, particularly at the address/es listed below, and elsewhere. Rabbi Benson has full right to appoint any agent or substitute in his stead and said substitute shall have full right to sell and lease as provided herein. President’s Welcome Andy Polan, NSJC President
We extend a well earned thank you to Terry Kocivar and JoAnne Shapiro for making our Honoree Celebration an overwhelming success. Yasher koach for your time and efforts that made it possible to honor Ginger & Roy Manas, Brandy & Craig Osman, and Michael Malkmes for their gemilut hasadim, their gifts of loving- kindness. Our honorees are shining examples of the neshama, the spirit here at NSJC. They are role models for our entire congregation and indeed, the community at large. Todah Rabah to chairpersons Robin Appel and Lenore Frank for continuing to provide our compelling Jewish Film Series.
fun and celebration. As we clear our homes of chametz in preparation for the observance of Passover this month, and the telling of the story of our ancestors going from bondage to freedom, many of us also use this period as a time of personal renewal of body, mind and soul. While we recall how our ancestors left Egypt and began to learn how to live with freedom from oppression, we must not forget that oppression is still alive and well in the 21st century. It is our responsibility to teach future generations not to forget their past, but to learn from it instead, as we always continue to look toward the future. Speaking of spring beginnings, the baseball bats are warming up and it’s time to say, “Play Ball!” Enjoy the great days ahead and may the best team win!
Of special importance was the January showing of Besa: The Promise. This film, shown in cooperation with the Islamic Association of Long Island, documented how Albanian Muslims rescued over 2,000 Jews during World War II (see below.) Some may say that, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” To that I add, “unless you are observing Purim at the end of March.” Thank you to Rabbi Benson, Cantor Kramer, Sherry Gutes and Jen Schwartz for the fun-filled activities presented in the spirit of celebrating a joyful Purim. Our children, teens and adults all enjoyed the
Albanian Muslims, Righteous Gentiles
Did you know that Albanian Muslims sheltered, fed, befriended and saved more than 2000 Jews during the Holocaust? Or that Albanian Muslims shun the word “foreigner” for the preferred word, “guest?” When Jews fled the Holocaust from Germany into Albania, there was no question for the Albanian Muslims about protecting these “guests.” On February 21st, approximately 40 NSJC congregants, 45 Muslims (members of the Islamic Association of Long Island), a few members of Temple Isaiah and several members of the Unitarian Church in Stony Brook attended the latest offering of our 7th annual NSJC Jewish Film Festival. “Besa, The Promise, How Albanian Muslims Saved Jews During World War II,” was presented jointly with the Islamic Association of Long Island.
It was an extraordinary evening of appreciation. Tammy Slobodkin had originally brought this film to our attention. Her first comment at the conclusion of the showing was, “Let this act of kindness encourage all of us to treat refugees, foreigners as guests.” During the evening, Rabbi Benson introduced some of his friends from the Muslim community who were in attendance. Our guest speaker Agjah Libohova, familiar with the events of the film, spoke to us with tears in his eyes as he explained the principle of “besa.” More than a simple promise, “besa” is a larger than life commitment to another human being, a commitment that must be fulfilled or even passed on to one’s children to fulfill. In responding to our thank you note, Agjah emailed us, “It was my pleasure to talk at your film festival. I was really surprised to see so many people from so many different backgrounds and cultures gathered to celebrate such a simple and ordinary act of civility, saving another human being’s life. I hope this documentary has helped and will continue to help build bridges between us humans and not walls.” Well said, my friend! Lenore FrankGathering at NSJC for viewing of “Besa, The Promise.”

This year’s Mitzvah Day provided an opportunity for NSJC members to come together to help those in need and to make the world a better place. Kol HaKavod to Jenn Solomon, Mitzvah Day Coordinator for creating this meaningful program at NSJC. Men’s Club provided a station for the Gift of Life Foundation, dedicated to the memory of Rich Randall, for those who wanted to sign up for the bone marrow registry. Our NSJC Seniors sorted and boxed donations for veterans and homeless Long Islanders. Youth Group members made blankets for Project Linus. Religious School students: made Mexican-style casseroles and bags of granola that provided lunch for those who rely on the St. Paul’s soup kitchen for meals; wrote letters to support PETA and to Israeli soldiers to let them know they were not forgotten; planted seedlings to give to residents of a local seniors’ center;
and wrote prayers and hopes for themselves and others to be placed in the Kotel, the Western Wall, by NSJC Religious School Principal Sherry Gutes during her recent trip to Israel. Families created posterboard displays describing the efforts of their favorite charities. Todah rabah to Inkterprise for custom t-shirts and to Port Jeff Bowl, Carnival Pizza, Movieland Cinemas and Tropical Smoothie Cafe for providing prizes. Yasher koach to all who participated and to all those who helped to make our efforts successful, from our clergy to Marcie Platkin and our office staff, to Gustavo Hernandez and our custodial staff, to parents and teachers of our Religious School students, to Sisterhood members and Youth Group members who assisted our students.

Last year saw the birth of a new organization whose goal is to strengthen Jewish life in Suffolk County. Comprised of over 20 local Jewish groups from synagogues to Touro Law School to JWOW and the YJCC, ELIJA seeks to publicize the events of Jewish interest taking place in the area, offer community-wide programing and build meaningful connections and opportunities for partnership between the constituent organizations.
