concepts
Over the next decade, we believe the bulk carrier
industry will experience signiicant change. With
rising public concerns putting pressure on regula-
tors and the growing cost of bunker fuel, owners will
increasingly focus on energy eficiency and compli-
ance with stricter requirements as to emissions to
air and water. Managing these issues will encourage
bulk carrier owners and operators to adopt new
technologies that will have a lasting impact on the
design, construction and operation of bulk carriers.
dnv gL is looking to the future and developed
concept studies with other partners, including the
concept vessels Ecore and ECO-ship 2020, which
demonstrate how new technologies can be used to
design, construct and operate bulk carriers more
eficiently.
These concepts are showcases of how new technology
and innovative thinking assists ship owners, operators,
yards and designers to meet new regulations as well
as expectations from charterers and cargo owners in
a competitive manner.
In dnv gL we are committed to share our unique
bulk-carrier expertise with customers in the critical
early phase of newbuilding projects to help them
develop vessel speciications tailored to their
individual needs.

Ecore
Based on available technology, the Ecore concept
represents a step change in vLOC design. Powered
by two-stroke dual-fuel ME-gI engines, this twin-
screw Lng-fuelled vessel features a more ballast-
friendly hull shape and a centre cargo-hold layout
and introduces a highly eficient self-loading system.
The centre cargo-hold layout and midship form was
developed to minimise ballast, enable more eficient
self-loading and discharge and allow space for Lng
tanks to be stored below the main deck. The self-
loading system enables the shore-based loader to
operate at a single point along the vessel, which is
safer and reduces the time spent in port. At the same
time, the ME-gI gas engines make it possible to
utilise a simple, yet unique propulsion-power solu-
tion with a total system eficiency similar to that of
conventional vessels, but with lower emissions.
EcO-ship 2020
ECO-ship 2020 is an energy-eficient and cost-effec-
tive concept design developed to help owners and
operators improve their commercial performance
while lowering fuel costs. The Lng-fuelled open-
hatch bulk-carrier concept features a number of
innovative solutions, including a wide twin-skeg hull,
Oshima’s Seaworthy bow, an air-lubrication system,
lean-burn four-stroke medium-speed gas engines
and a lexible propulsion and power-generation
system with a shaft generator/motor (PTO/PTI). The
ECO-ship 2020 is outitted with four large-capacity
electric jib cranes and hatch covers made of a com-
posite material that weighs about 50% less than the
traditionally used steel. The vessel has been specii-
cally designed to be fully compliant with future IMO,
ECA and Tier III emission requirements, emitting
about 50% less CO2 than typical existing OHBCs. A
signiicant part of the reduction is due to the highly
eficient propulsion system that runs on Lng.

ready to be built. dnv gL is involved in the develop-
ment of the concept, leaving the detailed design to
our partners, in order to avoid any potential conlict
of interest. Our goal is simple: to provide our cus-
tomers with safe, fuel-eficient, lexible and future-
proof design solutions, optimised for today’s trades.

Green Dolphin 38
The green dolphin 38 concept design is a ive-
cargo-hold CSR double-hull bulk carrier that meets
current and expected future air and water emissions
regulations. The design is a fuel eficient and mainte-
nance friendly, with high operational lexibility. With a
hull designed in partnership with SdARI, the concept
design provides improved overall performance at
different loading conditions and speeds. Close to a
hundred green dolphin 38s have been ordered, with
a major share to dnv gL class.
Green Dolphin 575
The green dolphin 575 concept design is a
handymax bulk carrier with ive cargo holds. It is
available in single-hull standard or double-hull
(open-hatch) conigurations. Similar to the green
dolphin 38, the hull is designed to achieve optimal
fuel eficiency without compromising on strength
and operational lexibility. new for this project is
that the hull’s performance in waves has also been
addressed through model testing and calculations
of the added resistance on a given trade route.
Oshima Wide beam Handy
The Oshima Wide Beam Handy concept design is
a fuel eficient post panamax beam handysize bulk
carrier. The wide beam allows for the loading of
larger cargo stems at lower draft, given a high ton-
mile eficiency. This concept design is well suited
to lift cargoes from shallow draft ports in the rapidly
expanding emerging markets.

recycling
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has
developed a ship recycling standard (the Hong Kong
Convention). While it may take time for the Conven-
tion to enter into force, many prudent owners are
already taking steps to ensure that ships are recycled
in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
dnv gL offers a variety of services and class nota-
tions that help ship owners specify certain minimum
standards related to the use and documentation
of hazardous substances on board throughout the
entire life cycle of a vessel. Many owners and yards
are already preparing to comply with the Inventory
of Hazardous Materials (IHM), a key provision of the
Convention. In support of these efforts, dnv gL
has developed the IHM green Server, speciically
designed to help owners keep IHM documentation
updated throughout the ship’s life cycle and provide
relevant information at the time of recycling.
dnv gL offers advisory services to help stakeholders
