SMART City : Background

• A city exists for the sake of a good life-NOT for the sake of life only (Aristotle) • 200 years ago, just 3 every 100 people

lived in cities. In 2020, 80% of the population in developed countries and 51% in developing countries live in cities (Sustania, 2012)

SMART-Concept

S = StandardizingM = MonitoringA = AccountingR = RethinkingT = Transforming

How standards makes our cities smarter

• Smart cities exemplify how sustainable development can go hand with increasing consumption and economic growth. Standards play a key role in the construction development of cities- today and tomorrow

SMART CITIES-Standards1. Urban Resilience2. Service life planning3. Intelligent and sustainable buildings4. Zero energy buildings5. Sustainable development in communities6. Drinking water and waste water services7. Energy management system8. Clean air9. Societal security10. Energy saving

11. Road safety12. Sustainable event management13. Energy saving-single family &

small commercial buildings14. Greener cars

ISO 39001:2012 - Road Safety Management Systems-Requirements with guidance for use

•Road accident account for some 1.3 millions fatalities each year. The number of people killed is on increase, particularly on law and middle income countries.

•ISO 39001:2012 can help reduce death and serious injury due to road accidents.

•ISO 39001 will assist governmental and private sector organization like by providing a structured, holistic approach to road safety as a complement to existing programs and regulations.

ISO 13153:2012, Framework of the design process for energy saving single- family residential and small commercial buildings

•ISO 13153:2012 helps architects and designer to develop energy efficient buildings well suited their locations.•In particular building project, they would like to know how much energy can be saved by a certain increase in buildings envelope’s thermal resistance, by using a more energy-efficient water heater and so on.

Conclusion

Standard has contributions to make add value and ensure “sustainable” and “smart” are inextricably linked. Everyone must work together.
