The new premises will be situated on five-hectare site, representing a constructible area of 96,000 m2. 36,000 m2 of space will be dedicated to RTL City, which will consist of three towers:

Towers A and B totalling 22,000 m2 will be used by RTL Group;Tower D totalling 14,000 m2 will subsequently be used by third parties.

In addition to the RTL City project, RTL Group plans to sell 60,000 m2 of space to a property developer for residential and mixed-use buildings.

Elmar Heggen, RTL Group CFO and Head of the Corporate Centre, gives the big picture: “The idea of building new premises was conceived back in 2007 when we identified a need to host our growing Luxembourgish activities in a more spacious and modern venue equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The new headquarters highlights our commitment to our historic home, Luxembourg, and is scheduled to be completed by the end 2016.

The architectural design not only reflects RTL Group’s pioneering spirit, but is also highly functional, while we have taken account of energy efficient and eco-friendly construction requirements. One of the objectives of the spatial rearrangement was to facilitate and maximise interaction and collaboration between staff, and at the same time the offices are designed to be more ergonomic with high standard working conditions. In a nutshell, by building RTL City, we are building our future.”

RTL City risesThe first phase of RTL City project began in August 2013 with the site clearance and demarcation of the construction zone involving the removal of 140,000 cubic metres of material weighing 280,000 tonnes requiring 14,000 truck journeys.

Following the preparation and excavation phase, phase two began in February 2014 with laying RTL City’s foundations. 120 construction workers are currently working on the RTL City site.

The construction of the RTL City towers will be followed by the technical installations (heating, cooling and ventilation, electricity, sanitation and lifts) and finalisation work (internal partitions, carpentry, kitchenettes and finishing touches).

Staff is scheduled to move into the new headquarters at the end of 2016, and the old site will be demolished and replaced by 60,000 m2 of residential and mixed-use buildings by 2020.

What will visitor’s first impressions be?On entering the new building, visitors will immediately know that they are in a media group headquarters from the rectangular block of 18 radio and sound studios with large windows offering glimpses of radio shows on air. These studios are in the middle of a three-storey glass-roofed atrium. Surrounding this

atrium will be a central reception desk, formal and informal meeting areas, a self-service restaurant, a takeaway and a coffee bar. Via the atrium, staff can access three TV studios and a comfortable lounge for TV audiences in the basement.

Where will the various departments be based?Tower A will have 15 office floors for the RTL Group Corporate Centre, CLT-UFA International, RTL Nederland, RTL Lëtzebuerg, Media Assurances and RTL Belgium. Tower B consists of seven floors and will house the offices of BCE. The allocation of office space for various departments will regroup teams that are currently dispersed and facilitate increased collaboration between staff.

In this context, RTL Lëtzebuerg TV, radio and digital services editorial teams will work in one large newsroom. Alain Berwick, CEO of RTL Lëtzebuerg, explains: “Our aim was to create a joint newsroom where the editorial teams of our TV, radio and online departments would gather to collaborate more efficiently. Moreover, the more prominent location of our radio studios will allow visitors to immediately see that this is a media company, while our TV programmes will be hosted in more modern studios equipped with the state-of-the-art technology we have invested in.”

The new premises will also host a fitness centre and exercise room on the 14th floor offering panoramic views over the forest. The boardroom is next to the fitness centre and will feature floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Luxembourg City.

Office layout

The offices in Towers A and B will be arranged around a central core area that incorporates the lifts, staircase and lavatories. The modern office design features glass walls, giving the working spaces a clean-cut look and feel. Speaking about the spatial and interior design of the offices, Sophie Depairon, Vice President Treasury, Corporate Finance and ERM at CLT-UFA and a member of the RTL City Project team, says: “While the physical size of the offices will be equivalent to the current ones, the impression will be rather different. The interior designers proposed floor-to-ceiling glass partition walls between the offices and the corridors to create a sense of space and provide a more transparent and modern office environment. The corridors will be equipped with copy corners and storage facilities. Every other floor will have informal coffee areas, providing extra meeting points for staff to maximise collaboration.”

The technical features of the new buildingsThe new buildings will have a B/B energy performance certificate, low energy consumption, and be connected to a highly energy-efficient cogeneration plant in the area. Its energy-efficient façade will have a pixelated, double skin system with internal blinds to reduce excess heat. The towers will be cooled by thermo-active concrete and use natural ventilation to ensure the desired level of comfort while saving energy.

Meanwhile, 21 multi-disciplinary workgroups have been created to pool knowledge regarding technological advances and coordinate the technical move into the new premises.

Speaking of the challenges faced by the project team, Stéphane Geerts, Vice President of Internal Services and Facility Management at CLT-UFA and a member of the RTL City Project team, says: “The main challenges are definitely linked to our media activities. The construction of the base, for example, was incredibly complex, starting with the TV studios in the basement, which requires a completely empty space without support columns. The complete absence of columns required huge beams to be placed in the TV studio ceilings to support the weight of the towers’ many upper floors. The radio and TV sound studios were another major challenge, as it is imperative to block out external noise in the studios. To this end, the architects used the technique a ‘box within a box’.”

“WE HAVE TO ACQUIRE AND BUILD MUST-SEE TV” RTL Hrvatska

On 2 July 2015, RTL Group Co-CEO Guillaume de Posch visited RTL Group’s Croatian family of channels, RTL Hrvatska in Zagreb. During his visit he presented the RTL Group strategy to Croatian colleagues, followed by a question and answer session and a tour of the site, including the technical departments. Croatia – 7 July 2015

“I’m very happy to be here and to see so many interested faces,” said Guillaume de Posch, before giving an overview of the three pillars of RTL Group’s strategy – broadcast, content and digital. “Television is and will remain strong if we create and test new ideas, inventing new ideas every day. We have to acquire and build must-see TV. We must collaborate with production companies, invest in new talent and strengthen our family of channels. We also have to find new ideas to develop non-advertising revenues,” said de Posch. Regarding the digital pillar, he added: “This is the pillar we want to expand.”

Guillaume de Posch’s speech was followed by a presentation by Henning Tewes, CEO of RTL Hrvatska, who talked about the launch of the three new pay TV channels, RTL Passion, RTL Living and RTL Crime, as well as the re-launch of the website. He also gave a brief overview of the current situation and a look ahead at the second half of the year.

“All shows we have launched since the beginning of this year are winning their slots. As the number two channel group, we cannot fight everywhere, but when we fight, we fight to win. Our audience shares are growing - in prime time and throughout the day. We are up and in contrast to past years and we are going to grow,” said Tewes.

Enex has recently held its Technical Meeting at TV 2 in Copenhagen (Denmark), which was attended by 38 delegates from 21 partner companies. Luxembourg – 6 July 2015

The event kicked off with a tour of the TV 2 studios followed by a visit to the high-tech team covering the Danish elections that day. The collaborating technical experts discussed the future of the news industry and the opportunities and challenges faced in today’s digital world. The focus this year shifted more toward external speakers in order to bring their expertise to the discussions. They included Lars Nielson, CTO of Ericsson, who spoke about the part 4G/LTE communications can play in content delivery for broadcasters, and Henrik Norrelykke, Vice President of Cobham Satcom, who underlined the big part traditional satellite broadcasting still has to play.

Adrian Wells, Managing Director of Enex, said: “We are seeing a growing role for IP and cellular distribution, but it is becoming clear that more traditional technologies still have a big part to play. There is a huge opportunity for Enex to provide real benefits from the opportunities presented by the mix of these new and old technologies on behalf of all the partners - just as it has since it was created.”

Bernhard and Elton compete against each other with the aim of winning as much money as possible for their supporters in the studio, because at the beginning of each show, the audience are asked to take sides: Bernhard Hoëcker or Elton. At the end of the show, the winnings are divided among those in the studio audience who guessed correctly. The game is played with the help of a large, interactive game screen with 12 different categories.

Among the celebrity guests will be the famous fellow quiz show presenter Frank Elstner, actor Christine Neubauer, and two footballers from the team who won for Germany the 1996 European Championship, Mario Basler and Thomas Helmer.

SMART, CLEVER, WITTY UFA Show & Factual

In addition to the daily broadcast, a special prime time edition of the game show Wer weiß denn sowas XXL? will be aired on 25 July 2015. The celebrity line-up will include tennis stars Boris Becker and Michael Stich, and comedian Bülent Ceylan.

Simon Cowell highlights: “It’s taken a while! But I am very happy to be able to confirm our line-up of judges for The X Factor this year. The combination of Nick, Cheryl and Rita is going to be a lot of fun! They all bring a lot of enthusiasm and passion for music to the show. The Black Pass is an entertaining programme aired by Plug RTL every Sunday at 17:50 that captivated viewers in French-speaking Belgium for five weeks. It came about as a result of the partnership between RTL Belgium’s TV production team, IP Belgium and Unilever for the Axe Black campaign. Belgium – 9 July 2015

The programme is the fruit of efforts and synergies between various arms of RTL Belgium (its creative agency, media agency, the channel itself and its advertising department) which all joined forces to come up with a brand new concept for promoting their advertiser Unilever’s Axe Black brand.

Each weekly 20-minute episode of The Black Pass presented to the viewers a Belgian city with a Belgian celebrity’s personal view. Eusébio Larrea, RTL Belgium’s Manager Internal Productions, explains: “Plug RTL has always spotlighted Belgian celebrities – singers, actors, designers – in a creative way. The creative process behind this programme is innovative in that the concept was jointly devised by the TV production team, IP TV’s Crea Lab and Unilever. The programme not only showcases home-grown talent, but also spotlights great places and top addresses to check out, telling viewers which parts of town to visit, which bars and restaurants to try out and providing some really hot tips on where to find the best fashion. The Black Pass presented each week a different Belgian city

were directed to the websites www.plugrtl.be and www.axe.be, which detailed the music and places featured on the programme and also offered viewers an interactive extension of the show in the form of the ‘Axe Black Guide’ app, enticing viewers to explore the Axe.

IP TV Director Stéphane Coruble explains: “The team effort by Unilever /Mindshare, Plug RTL staff and IP TV’s Crea Lab in making the programme The Black Pass underscores the full creative potential of the TV channels run by RTL in Belgium. Our aim is to step up such format-free, out-of-the-box collaborative efforts by working together with advertisers in an effort to showcase the values of their brands and associate them with the programmes broadcast on our channels. We are delighted that Unilever opted to place its trust in IP TV’s Crea Lab to promote its new product Axe Black using an innovative new editorial partnership and tell people about the coolest, trendiest places and fashion hot spots in the most densely populated cities of Belgium.” Valérie Morfitis, Unilever’s Country Media Manager, says: “Axe is a global brand whose marketing mix has developed internationally. Alongside more conventional campaigns designed to raise its profile, we are firm believers in the fundamental value of embedding the brand in a local context. We brought in one partner in the north and IP TV in the south to work on the joint development of content relevant to Axe’s core target group. Our aim in so doing was to enlist our consumers’ loyalty to the brand in Belgium. This top-quality content is of course broadcast on Plug RTL, but is also disseminated via our digital, multi-channel communication plan so as to increase the number of touch points with our customers”.

Axe Brand Manager Ankatrin Pessemier adds: “Axe Black is a totally new kind of Axe. In a world that is becoming increasingly agitated, we are looking for subtlety, as expressed by our slogan “Less is more”. The collaboration with Plug RTL on the Axe Black Guide is totally in keeping with this strategy. Together with several magnetic personalities, we will go in search of the coolest hangouts in a number of large cities. We are also creating unique content that we will be able to share across different platforms, thereby extending our reach beyond the conventional channels used to advertise.”

JULIA KIKILLIS

Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland Germany – 8 July 2015

Julia Kikillis is taking over the management of Vox’s Communications Department. Kikillis, 35, has worked as a press officer for Vox since May 2008 and as Deputy Head of the Communications Department since January 2015.

After earning a degree in Communication Sciences, Kikillis completed a PR internship in the press office of Brainpool TV GmbH from November 2006 to May 2008 before joining Vox. She succeeds Corinna Teuner, who passed away in May 2015 after a long illness.

Bernd Reichart, Managing Director of Vox, says: “We are pleased that we were able to appoint Julia Kikillis, our first choice, as the new Head of Communications at Vox. Thanks to her long years of experience at Vox, most recently as Deputy Head, she has already helped to shape the communications strategy. She also has the full trust and confidence of the entire Vox press team, which she prudently guided through a time that was personally stressful for everyone due to Corinna Teuner’s illness. The fact that Vox was able to keep up the quality of its communication activities during this time is as much to her credit as to that of her team.”

APPOINTMENTS AND NEW ARRIVALS IN THE POLITICAL

DEPARTMENT RTL Radio (France) France – 6 July 2015

Jérôme Chapuis

France’s leading general-interest radio station is strengthening its political department and continuing to develop its range of current affairs programmes, as evidenced by the arrival of a number of new presenters after the summer break.

With an eye on the 2017 French presidential election, RTL Radio (France) is proud to announce the appointment of a new Deputy Editor-In-Chief, Benjamin Sportouch, to strengthen its political team. The 38-year-old journalist won RTL Radio’s Bourse Dumas in 2001 and began his career at the rue Bayard, before joining the political team at L’Express, then working as a correspondent for the French Press Agency (AFP), reporting from the prime minister’s office in 2007. He also co-authored a book on Nicolas

Sarkozy’s presidential campaign, which was published in 2012.

Jérôme Chapuis, who has been Deputy Editor-In-Chief of the political department of RTL Radio (France) since 2011, will be joining the station’s morning show team on 24 August. Alongside Stéphane Carpentier and Yves Calvi, the man who fronted the political show Le Grand Jury RTL/Le Figaro/LCI will switch to presenting the news at 06:00 and 07:30. A graduate of Lille’s School of Journalism (ESJ Lille), Jérôme Chapuis started out as a political journalist, namely as a reporter for Europe 1 in 2006. Subsequently, he became Deputy Editor-In-Chief of the political department of i-Télé/Canal+. He also co-wrote the book Les étés meurtriers, les politiques ne prennent jamais de vacances.

PEOPLE

Elizabeth Martichoux

Starting this autumn, the new presenter of Le Grand Jury RTL/Le Figaro/LCI, which airs from 18:30 to 19:30 every Sunday, will be Elizabeth Martichoux, who has headed the political department of RTL Radio (France) since 2013. After joining the station as an economic journalist back in 2005, she was subsequently entrusted to present the 08:00 news, but after being appointed Editor-In-Chief, she switched to becoming a co-presenter of the midday news bulletin and the public debate format Les auditeurs ont la parole for two seasons.

Nicolas Domenach will take his first steps on the airwaves by joining the team presenting the station’s morning show On n’est pas forcément d’accord on RTL Matin. Twice a week he will do the show’s editorial at 08:15, alternately alongside Eric Zemmour and Alexandra Szacka. Nicolas will endeavour to show how current affairs are “characterised by fraternity, life and positive expectations in a Europe that is deep in crisis just two years away from a seemingly potentially explosive presidential election.” After starting out at the Quotidien de Paris and then the Matin de Paris, Nicolas helped to create l’Evénement du Jeudi in 1984, then set up Marianne in 1997, becoming its Deputy CEO in 2007. In 2014, he joined the weekly business magazine Challenges as a political columnist. He has co-authored several political books, including Off: Ce que Nicolas Sarkozy n’aurait jamais dû nous dire and De si bons amis.

Christopher Baldelli, CEO of RTL Radio (France), says: “I am very intent on making sure that as a broadcaster we express diverse sensibilities. RTL is the radio station that presents the full spectrum of opinions, side by side, to enrich public debate and enable everyone to shape their own views.”
